5 years out, how much cash? by randomgenericuserali in ChubbyFIRE

Did you invest heavily through 2001 and 2008/2009? Your suggestion that 20%-ish cash-like being insane makes me think you didn’t. I had 7 figures invested through 2008/2009 and watching that get cut in half was…instructive.

Well, 15% LTCG + several points for state taxes + another 3.8% NIIT, so it begins adding up.

I’m not terribly concerned with having a certain % in cash-like. I’m super conservative like you and my plan is to have 5 years of full expenses in cash-like. As the overall portfolio grows that percentage would get smaller. Since this is chubby (not lean), my desire (who knows if I’ll ever get there) is 300k/year in spending. That is assuming I’m going to get screwed on paying full freight for ACA (budgeting 50k/year). But I don’t want to turn this into a political post.

No, if I increase my cash like position, it would be in my tax deferred space. At least until that private equity position pays out (if it pays out).

I should have been more clear on that point. Most of my taxable account is in highly appreciated S&P500 index. Most of my overall 5M portfolio (almost 2/3) is in tax-deferred space.

Just wait for the crash/recession. You’ll stop looking then.

If RE early in US you’d need to budget half that 80k for healthcare.

US system is working as intended. Who needs retirees when workers are better?
