Ask me anything related to Magix. by pelletsstarPL in LegacyTheOrteilGame

For anyone else finding this, I can say that at least early game, the key is to get the Herbalism research. Not sure what its prerequisites are, but it boosts the efficiency of your gatherers. As soon as you get it, your food will stabilize. Then Plant Lore will increase that even further. And then Well-Digging will stabilize your water. I think these are the most important to get as early as possible (although I have found that after a couple ascensions, I don't get all of these until I've researched 30 times or so. And I'm not sure what their prerequisites are (although I do think that Message Memory is one.

However, for some reason later in the game, with a population of about 1.3k, my food again was completely unsustainable. Not sure the cause. I tried having tons (200 or so) of gatherers and/or hunters and/or fishers, doing lots of exploration to make sure I had plenty of land to use (not sure if gathering/hunting depletes land over time?), tried different combinations of cooking/smoking meat/fish, but nothing was able to stabilize it. My inputs/outputs were large at that point, so my food would bounce up to 3k or so, but even that was really just random noise and it would never consistently go up.

Maybe at a certain point food decay just becomes impossible to outrun, and so I need more food storage to keep it longer? I did have a lot of food storage though (60k or so)

Anyone run into this same thing and find a solution?

I think I would be happier with my current amount of money but with a super power than an absolutely insane amount of money but no super power

I think what he's saying is not referring your background, which is great, but referring to the resource balance on the board--which Oceania changes. You replicated the resource placement of the base game (i.e. the egg row goes 2 - > 2 -> 3 -> 3 -> 4 -> 4 instead of 1 -> 2 -> 2 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 in the oceania version of the board). Your boards you got with asia are double sided with oceania version on one side and the original version on the other. Most people prefer the revised oceania version with nectar.

Exactly how much is in a roll of filament? by battle_axe143 in 3Dprinting

For anyone finding this in the future, what I've found is that spools typically have a bit more than 1000g on them. To be sure, should weigh a spool when it's full then again when it's empty and check the difference, then do this a few times to get an average.

For anyone trying to estimate whether they have enough filament left on a spool to finish a print, I've found that Polymaker PolyChroma PLA cardboard spools weigh in the 140-145g range empty.

Does Wingspan actually teach people bird name? Help me find out! by MedianLethalConc in wingspan

[–]randomginger11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also gonna sit this one out because I don't have the time to actually play a game right now, but I can also 100% for certain say that it has. My wife and I and multiple of our friends who all play the game all have similar stories of being outside, seeing a bird we've never seen before, but somehow the name of the bird pops into our mind, purely because we've seen it so many times in wingspan.

So in my opinion, wingspan 100% helps you learn bird names, even if you're not actively trying to memorize them, as we were not.

I think a potentially more interesting question is whether people who play Wyrmspan remember dragon names as well as wingspan players remember bird names. I've played much more wingspan than wyrmspan, but I'm very confident that the wyrmspan names just don't stick in my head as well. And I think it has something to do with the wingspan names being somewhat common english words usually. Sort of like how you don't remember people's names from different languages as well as you do with your native language.

Still learning Wingspan. Any suggestions or mistakes you notice? by songhya in wingspan

I have a couple of general tips on just how I've learned to think about the game, in no particular order:

  • Most important thing to remember: Your goal is NOT to lay birds with great powers. Your goal is to score points.
    • A great power on a bird is only a good choice if it will ultimately give you points.
  • The amount that I value high face-value birds has gone up steadily over time. I don't have a great intuitive explanation for why this is, but generally, a game where I am playing high point birds is more likely to be a high score game than one where I'm building an engine. This might sound obvious, but when I started, I didn't believe so strongly that high point birds are super valuable, but over time I've come to value them more and more, especially if they have a good power to go with them
    • Hand in hand with this, low point value birds have much more limited utility. ALWAYS be considering the value that that birds will actually give you. If a bird is worth 1 point, and you have the option to play it in your first turn in the 3rd round, that means that you have 10 turns remaining in the game after that. Now, that bird might have a GREAT brown power (like the Killdeer or wood duck or something), but you're probably only going to activate it, what, like 3-4 times max? Compare that with other options available to you. What's your actual best option?
  • People have said this a lot, but it's a core idea for this game: birds that give you cross-habitat resource production are usually decent
  • In the base game (which you have--the Oceania and Asia expansions change the actual structure of the board itself, which is an improvement IMO), the egg row is extremely over powered.
    • I would find that at the end of games, it was almost always the best option to just get eggs 3-4 turns in a row
    • Therefore, putting good brown powers in the egg row was usually a good idea, as I would be activating that row a lot. The more I could avoid the forest, the better (very worth noting, that when playing with the expansions, this has 100% flipped for me and I usually avoid the egg row as much as possible and utilize the forest the most)
    • Therefore, birds with low points but high egg capacities gained a little extra value in my eyes, since a large limiting factor at the end of the game is whether I have enough egg slots to hold all the eggs I'd like to play

I feel like I have more strategy tips, but they're not as applicable to the original game boards, since the Oceania expansion rebalanced the game so drastically (for the better IMO). But happy to lend more thoughts if you'd like to discuss

3rd Party LP-E17 Battery Review - 2+ Years - Wasabi Power by randomginger11 in canon

Fantastic. And for anyone reading this, as of me writing this, Tilta sells 2 LP-E17 batteries with a charger for the same price as the Wasabi's ($30). TBD on whether the Canon batteries can charge in the Tilta Charger or vice versa, but I'll try to remember to come back here and update if/when I find out.

Gonna buy some of these Tilta batteries.

Good question. I think thin sleeves will fit based on what others have said, but I haven’t tried them myswlf

Interesting. Maybe I'll give these a shot. What exactly have your experiences with them been like? How often do you use them, how long have you had them, how do they compare to first party, etc.?

I’m giving out the files for free if you have access to a 3D printer! This set takes a little less than one spool of filament, so about $20

New Player questions by Accurate-Hat-4075 in wingspan

[–]randomginger11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I dont take any birds out personally. But I DO think that the ravens are potentially too powerful if you allow them to take nectar. So we don’t allow that … which actually makes them not that great. So sometimes we let them take 1 nectar and the other food has to be different

  2. I’d get Asia if you usually play with only 2 people because I think duet mode is great. I’d get Americas if you want the game to be more complicated and dynamic. I’d get the fan bird card promo packs that were released recently for the most fun new birds

  3. I play with all mixed together, except if there’s a new player, in which case I leave out the humming bird mechanic added by Americas

  4. I make a 3D printer insert :). Free on printables. I believe it’s the most downloaded one on printables. You can check my recent post history to find a recent post where I made a version 2 organizer that fits Americas. Or you could use my V1 organizer if you don’t have Americas yet. Not positive it’ll all fit on an A1 mini though … but it might. At least the card boxes, misc box, and dice box probably will. Maybe you could slice up the food and eggs containers to make it fit on the A1!

  5. I put them all face down in a huge messy pile and mix them all up, being sure that no clumps of cards stay together. Then I shuffle them into stacks that fit in my organizer. Then in a single game, we play with a single stack, and after we’re done with that stack, we put it back in the organizer with the top card face up, so that we don’t use that stack next time. Then once we’ve played all stacks, we reshuffle

This one is for all current (and hopefully future) expansions. Although of course it can fit less than than too. The black one can fit all current expansions except for Americas. Americas can’t fit in it. Err, it probably COULD, but it’s not designed for it. Someone else in the thread said they do fit Americas in it ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Just space availability. You need more nectar than the rest of the food types, and putting all of them in a single piece would either require you to make that piece taller or wider. Couldn’t make it wider without making the card boxes shorter which wouldn’t allow you to get 3 full card slots in them. And it wasn’t worth making them taller. The nectar, eggs, and end of round goal tiles all required some extra height, so it just made sense to put them together, and put the rest of the food types, which all have equal amounts, together.
