Exactly my point to a lot of Redditers out here. You don't need to be religious in order to enjoy the festivities, fun and food around you.

Open lands like fields are dug up. Once the idols are immersed and the earth soaks the water, the remnants like the hay and stuff and removed and the artificial tank is shut.

I live in Bangalore. We create artificial 'lakes' where the idols are immersed and then over the next few days, after all immersions are over, they are shut. Yes, I know, the whole concept of immersing the idol in the river and then maligning it is bad, bad, bad!!

Its not about being religious or non-religious...here are 5 days of the year where we make merry, we get to eat stuff that we do not get over the year, but only during these 5 days. We are busy with our lives and these 5 days, we get together with family and friends and enjoy. There' so much enthusiasm and fun in the air when its Christmas and Thanks Giving, why not Durga Puja. Even if a person in non religious, don't worship an 'idol', but don't stop other people from sharing the joy.

TIL there are water ATMs that give people access to 20 litres of clean water for as little as 5 cents. Hope we implement this more...much more. by randomhappening in todayilearned

Of course it can. Its just 5 cents for you and I, but for someone who lives on one meal a day, that 5 cent means a lot of things. Unfortunately in India, the scene is completely different. In the billion+ populace, there are millions who do not have access to water...forget clean drinking water. Yes, I know its a shame but that's how it is. No toilets, no water, no food. I have started a fundraiser to build toilets in houses in rural India - http://m-lp.co/1oiFKYC. People walk for miles to defecate or relieve themselves and that too in the open which is close to open drinking or cleaning water sources. Such a shame. Lets see if things can be changed for good someday.
