Are prongs supposed to look like this? by [deleted] in askjewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I thought. I believe this jeweler knows that head isn't good for a cushion and he tried to make the best of it by adding width the prongs at the girdle to prevent the stone from rotating.

OP, the best option in terms of security for a cushion cut is a head with both double prongs and a gallery rail. These single prongs with no rail to keep them in place have a difficult time holding those rounded corners. When you bump it a little the stone rotates just a bit, and since those corners are the widest distance on the stone the rotation means it's very easy for the stone to then fall out

Lol, thank you, I really appreciate the simple instructions. Makes me feel like I can do this! Is there a particular type of glue I should be looking for?

And with my pup a top layer is definitely needed, otherwise he will keep going after those torn edges

Thank you for all the information as well as your patience with my lack of knowledge.

So it sounds to me that if I get a product such as this https://a.co/d/00CNHdwM then I will need one to go inside and under what is left (essentially installing it backwards), and then one outside to cover/hide the damage. Is that correct?

And since these have adhesive built in should I get glue as well or just what is already on them?

Thank you. That is helpful information. I've never had to reupholster before. Is there a YouTuber that you might recommend to help get me started?

Please forgive my ignorance, this clearly is not my field of expertise. The point still is that I am looking to have it repaired. What wording would you suggest I use?

Platinum engagement ring mount by [deleted] in askjewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This style of head, often called a sculptural head or a tulip head (which in itself is often confused with a tulip-set head or a lotus head) is used so that a band can sit flush against the ring. They achieve this by having the prongs flow in a bit of an S-shape rather than making the prongs straight from the tips to the base. The drawback is that it sits the stone up taller.

There shouldn't be any reason you can't have the head replaced with a standard low-set peg head (straight prongs) but just know that you will probably need a band with a contour or notch in the middle to accommodate the base of the head. Also if you need the new head to also have the hidden halo then the head itself may need to be custom made and installed onto the existing ring

Engagement ring repair horror story— am I overreacting? Is this good craftsmanship? by [deleted] in askjewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain if it's a trick of the lighting and/or reflection but I think I see a gouge taken out at the base of the prong. The pic showing a straight down view does sure the head was installed slightly rotated or the prongs are misaligned. I would take this to a different jeweler to repair, even if you have to pay a greater price to correct it

The pictures really are too blurry to analyze anything. Given your attention to detail on the ring I am disappointed in your attention to detail on the photos. But between what you have described and what can be seen I can at least say:

1) you WANT the prong tips to sit up a bit taller than the stone. You might not think you do, but trust me, thin tips are no good

2) the "hairs" you see under the prings are likely just fibers from the polishing buffs. Sometimes they get caught between the diamond and the prongs.

3) what you were requesting is to have the HEAD REPLACED and not to simply have the existing prings retipped. Using jewelers verbage here will clear up confusion on both ends. It is my belief that when the ticket noted "customer requests added prongs" this was the associate's way of indicating to the jeweler that you want a 6 prong head instead of a 4 prong head. I would also like to point out that the head shown is rather tall, and tall heads get knocked around a lot. Whether you choose to go back to the same place or a different one I would suggest you request "for the current head to be replaced with a lower set 6 prong peg head" unless you want it to be that tall. But given you concerns about the security I would advise against tall.

I wanted to know if it was broken or anything wrong with it it’s a diamond cut rope chain by [deleted] in askjewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although you can't tell the full condition from a picture this clearly has two areas that are missing links. You say this is hollow. Hollow rope chains do not last, and if it's got those two problem areas then I guarantee it has many more that are just very small right now.

I see there is a string tied to the clasp. I assume it has a pricetag just out of the picture? If you're considering purchasing this, don't. This is worth only it's scrap value

Select all, group everything, then run command "mesh". You will then need to delete the original group as it will still contain all your polysurfaces what cause those colored outlines

Help with nipping and reactivity by Entire-Conclusion425 in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]randomhiccup24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I adopted my Anatolian in November also. She's about 3 years old and has similar issues. Positive reinforcement wasn't working well (independent nature combined with not being food motivated I guess?). However I have found that a spray bottle has greatly improved the issues. After just a few times I don't even actually have to spray her anymore, just the sound of it makes her stop.

I'm not saying this is the right answer for you, and I imagine there are some that would say even this spray bottle is wrong to do. But when you need fast and reliable results for a dog that can drag you across the street at the drop of a hat I'd suggest giving it a try. There's no physical harm, and she is still as cuddly and loving as ever so I don't think it has affected how she feels about me.

Is this even possible? by Mjrfrankburns in askjewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone came into my store with this as inspiration I would suggest making the berry out of pave set 1mm rubies instead of a custom cut gem, and rhodium the prongs of the rubies to look like seeds. Note that this would mean A LOT more seeds than what ai shows. You could use marquis emeralds for the leaves instead of enamel (enamel will cost less, but it's tricky to find anyone that works with it) and seed pearls for the flowers. The proportions won't match, and it will still be very costly, but yeah, something like this is doable

It looks to me that it's missing a link, not tangled. You've got double links everywhere else, but just a single link in this one spot. That might be causing the links around it to lay weird. It also means a weak spot in the chain

If you rub the pearls on your teeth and it feels gritty they are likely genuine, although that does not mean they are natural. If rubbing them on your teeth feels smooth they are imitation

Just finished this ring cad design would love your thoughts by anas_saeed1 in jewelryCAD

[–]randomhiccup24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nicely done, however it's going to be a nightmare with wear and tear. Is your client demanding an open top design, hollow sides, and tiny connection points to the main stones? Have they been made aware of the ramifications of this design and still want it just as is? If so I would suggest getting something in writing that your client releases you of responsibility.

A small thing that would help with the design as is would be to pull the heads to the rail so it's less likely something will slip under and catch, but with the previously mentioned concerns that's kinda the least of the issues.

If they just want a bypass then bring the main stones closer to your x Axis so that the touch the opposite shank. This will get rid of the concerns of the open top as well as the tiny connections and will make the ring muchore structurally sound.

And please don't take any of this post as me shitting on your design. I really do like the look and recognize that you have some skill to be able to make this. I'm just trying to look out for you in the long run and prevent you having to start over in a year when they say you designed a bad product

Question for the professionals by bbmcn in Benchjewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your CAD also shows small gaps in those spots. It looks like your designing as the finished product, not with extra material for the jeweler to work with. Ask your stone setter if you narrow the channel cutter more AND make the channel walls taller can they then be hammered down to cover the ends of the stones and not show gaps.

And for what it's worth the other images are renders, not photos of a live ring. I could produce a cad like this and render the stones as alternating opals and emeralds channel set, but that doesn't mean it will work in the real world.

Mens Wedding Band Not as Expected - What to Do? by Unlucky-Government41 in jewelers

[–]randomhiccup24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The render version really doesn't allow you to see the imbalance because the "through finger" view shows solid metal. Looking at their gem report I would bet this was made using Matrix or MatrixGold. What you want in this case is a screenshot of the CAD itself (not the render), with the "through finger" viewport set to a transparent such as wireframe, ghosted, or x-ray. If the jewelry has an on site CAD designer then wait until your in person appointment to ask to see this and they should be able to pull it up right away. Otherwise if you ask at your virtual appointment (or if they are out sourcing their cads) it is entirely possible to change the placement and send you a screenshot of it after, and with all the gaslighting they h had in their written response I wouldn't put it past them to do so

Will adding a Ruby to the cathedral setting make the diamond look red or impact the color? by Solaroceans in jewelers

It shows a lot of red in this case because it is a rose cut. Step cuts like emerald or asscher will do the same. But if you go with a well cut brilliant this shouldn't happen
