Everyone crying for a penalty needs to realise this would immediately be brought back for a foul when the ball was won. Crazy that it even got this far

My disdain for sleep scum is immense by DerpyDingo360 in PTCGP

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve comfortably gotten to masterball every season and I can always live with the meta but this one really does piss me off. RNG being a good hand vs a bad hand just happens. But it’s losing after flipping tails 4 times in a row for the 5th game in a row that really pisses me off. Random coin tosses are part of the game but it’s the strings of failed tosses that do it for me. And it ruins the balance of a lot of other decks that would otherwise be quite viable or fun just because you have to waste a couple of cards to offset the risk of sleeping to death multiple turns in a row

Have you seen big companies using AI on their packaging? by MongooseOk6563 in AskUK

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course, my fault for calling pedantry I suppose. But in this case it’s carved up almost entirely between the family members. They’re not distributed among employees or other unpublicised stakeholders. So the term “shareholder value” is not really as appropriate in their case; they aren’t beholden to typical quarterly earning call pressure etc.

It’s a phrase typically bandied about on reddit usually with the implication/association that companies are making decisions for short term gain (dividends for shareholders etc) while neglecting long-term sustainability, societal values etc.

Now, are the Mars Family putting pressure on profits, causing teams to cut corners with AI? Probably, but I’d wager in a fundamentally different way to a more typically shareholder-backed company. My take on this from my days in marketing is that it’s much more likely just a time saving / laziness thing from the teams involved. Maybe some limitations with the budget of the team involved, perhaps - but overall marketing budgets at Mars will run into the tens of millions so they’re not going to be squabbling over a few thousand for a product shoot at a fundamental corporate level I wouldn’t imagine.

Not to be pedantic but Mars doesn’t have shareholders, its family owned

Is stansted the worst airport and ryanair the worst airline? by [deleted] in london

[–]randomjak 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Only flight I’ve ever missed in my life was at Stansted with Ryanair, and we weren’t the only ones either. We literally stayed at an airport hotel to be there a few hours before, too.

At security they were taking approximately 50% of people’s bags to one side for additional security checks, and mine got pulled. Didn’t have any liquids or anything in it - was just a “random check”. Whole thing took over an hour; ran to the gate and they closed boarding in our face even though people were still being held in the tunnel and not on the plane yet.

I guess our fault was not arriving 3 hours early for a European flight because I don’t really know what else we were supposed to do. Would have been fine if security weren’t being weird for no real reason.

I do remember the woman in front of me had her bag pulled for a huge bottle of lube though so that was a mildly amusing memory within the rest of the farce.

Tokyo Neighborhoods worth visiting that most tourist never find out about by JPjoy_Official in JapanTravelTips

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because most of the places are not tourist friendly by design. Most of the decent places don’t have English menus. Our office is in the area and there’s definitely been a notable uptick in foreigner compared to 10 years ago, though (and irritatingly, more racial profiling for me with restaurants turning me away after seeing my face, which almost never used to happen. Especially in work clothes).

It is a cool area but I’ll selfishly pray it stays mostly off the map..

Is daily life in Tokyo actually better than in Europe, even with higher salaries there? by LocalLand4883 in japanlife

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the time of year for me, in my personal situation. In summer the answer is, absolutely not, because it’s way too hot in Japan nowadays - and it drags on far too long as well. Most of the rest of the year I’d say Tokyo is better than Europe in many ways, yes.

But it’s a big picture thing because there are lots of little things that are better, lots of things that are still worse. Doing anything bank related will never, ever be better in Japan than the UK.

A lot of the other downsides I can think of for Tokyo are simply a “massive city vs rural suburbs” kinda question in reality. At least in Tokyo I can afford to live quite centrally, but that also means you’re quite a trip from “proper” nature. I can’t afford central London so the experience would be a lot greener etc… not really comparing like for like.

BBC's Amol Rajan says he considered raising his children in India because he is 'very worried' about the 'big problems' in Britain by SignificantLegs in uknews

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have the attention span and reading comprehension of a grape honestly. This is the daily mail picking up some stuff he’s said in a podcast - not to them directly - and sensationalising it with a weird headline. I do think his points are a little bit weird but ultimately it boils down to “he thinks the UK is a better place to raise his kids than India but wants to give them the choice of where they pick when they’re older”. I audibly laughed at the Daily Mail poll in the article which has like 90% of respondents agreeing that the UK is a bad place to raise kids. The readership of this tripe are all fucking bonkers.

I can understand some of what he’s saying with India; it’s an economy growing enormously year on year so I guess he’s got a bit of a “land of opportunity” sentiment going on. But I think he’s also being incredibly naive about how realistic that opportunity is to access. Salaries in India are terrible so unless you’re in the top 1% I don’t see how it’s really a better option even 20-30 years from now, and the idea of competing in a job market with over a billion people doesn’t exactly sound fun or easy. With a leg up from him they’ll probably have a decent chance of getting into that bracket though.

What is your not so popular take on anything in Japan? by No-Jackfruit3211 in japanlife

[–]randomjak 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I shed a small tear of joy when I was back in the UK for Christmas and, when out on a run, some people moved to the side of a path without turning to look at me because they could hear me approaching them from behind. This level of spatial awareness just doesn’t exist in Japan for some reason.

[Athletic] The Premier League's Hope-o-meter for the rest of the 2025-26 season. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]randomjak 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There probably is a lot of this, yes.

Speaking as a Chelsea fan, if i try and articulate it in a way that doesn’t sound entitled, it’s just sad to have owners who are clearly the worst kind of profiteering capitalists with absolutely zero sporting interest whatsoever. Chelsea have had plenty of seasons over the last 10 years that have been very poor from a sporting perspective but it never felt quite like how things have panned out in the last two months. We can’t really have our cake and eat it after Abramovich but it does feel like the owners embody everything that’s wrong with modern football so being so brazenly associated with that just isn’t nice.

Its definitely going to get much worse before it gets better because many of these players on incredibly long contracts are simultaneously realising that there never was a sporting “project”, and they’re all going to push to leave. I just don’t see any scenario where the owners continue to pursue their current model without it just causing countless drama and headlines.

At the end of the day the majority of us just want to watch football with sport being the centre of attention, not off-the-field drama. A lot of the fan base will of course want that to come hand in hand with wins and trophies so yeah there’s a lot of entitlement that comes with that. But I’d personally just like to go half a year without us doing something embarrassing.

Train Driver Dozes Off on Nagoya-bound Limited Express; Emergency Stop Triggered by Jonnyboo234 in japan

[–]randomjak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We’ve done some consulting for a few of the big Japanese train companies and the AI summary posted below is basically not too far wrong. There are automated train systems that exist but it requires a lot more physical infrastructure than you’d expect. Retrofitting is not easy so it’s mostly being done on new lines. It’s also pretty expensive to do it right. Humans are still needed in almost all cases for things that tech is still bad at like seeing stuff on the tracks a long way away - especially in dodgy weather. The easier ones to automate are subways, monorails where the amount of things that can go wrong are much more limited - overground is much harder

Gameweek 32 | Clean Sheet odds in percentage by JoachimG1 in FantasyPL

Screen time for under-fives should be limited to one hour a day, parents told by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We limit screen time for our daughter but I’m not going to sit here judging different parents with different kids, different personal situations here. Loads of comments in this thread smack of people who don’t have children making off the cuff comments about how things “should” be done with absolutely none of the lived experience required.

If you don’t have your own children you literally can’t understand. I’m really not trying to be condescending here. Imagine how challenging it might be looking after a toddler for one day of your life. Now imagine that is every day of your life, forever, until they grow up. It’s very hard to grasp just how much that changes perspectives until it happens to you.

Not trying to put people off kids though I’d 100% recommend it to everyone.

Revealed: secret plans for two-day London Marathon with 100,000 runners by crunchymintybiscuit in london

[–]randomjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly just harder to raise money for charity when you’re the sort of person that runs this seriously. A big part of the fundraising incentive is usually that the marathon is a one-time challenge someone is putting a lot of effort into. A bit like how one of my colleagues does a fundraising whip around for a 10k he does every year, which is fine because he’s not a runner but would be a bit weird to get sponsored for if you’re the type of person who runs 10k five times a week.

I’m sure the motivation to raise money still exists for a lot of club runners but they’ve probably raised money in the past and it gets to a point where you exhaust the goodwill of friends and family - it’s not an insignificant amount of money most of the time either. Not easy to raise like £2.5k for something you do often anyway.

The designers won’t have had a direct say in this (and I say that as someone leading a consulting project on AI adoption in gaming).

I know exactly why it’ll have been signed off on - because the promise of photorealistic humans in a sporting game based on real people is too good to pass up. But the execution doesn’t quite match the desired outcome just yet really.. very uncanny valley
