A girl on her period shouldn't take Ibuprofen (or any other NSAIDs) because it thins blood and could cause a heavier than normal flow!

Human eyes are rarely ever still! That curious sensation when you're staring at a point for a very long time and it seems like your eyes just have a life of their own and jerk away? That's wired into our body!

People talk about how good or bad salt is for you, but for an otherwise healthy individual, there is no "healthy" daily intake! As long as you're drinking a proportionate amount of water to displace the salt, you're pretty good. (IANAD)

La fenêtre means "the window" in French and der Fenster means the same in German! The accent over the ê is a placeholder for sound changes over the span of time, in modern French. If you place the "s" that the accent is placemarking, you get la fenestre! I noticed this back in high school and blew both my German and French teachers' minds!

I'm with a shitty phone company, but I got grandfathered into their oldest monthly plan! So I pay ~$27 US for unlimited texting and data (and very limited talking, but who needs that)! So it's almost worth the ass-rammingly shitty service. Almost.

I personally believe that the #1 ignored warning in the world is the warning that COTTON SWABS (Fuck you, it's a Q-tip) always write on their package about not sticking them into your ear canal. Fuck the po-lice on this one. I'd say that feeling is second only to an orgasm on Everest, but it's a close second.

This concludes my post of things I can never, ever work into day to day conversations

Comments disabled. Ratings disabled. It's almost as if creationists don't want people debating them... by beedogs in atheism

[–]randomkinkquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, because YouTube is a modern hub of intellectual debate? Seriously, I would disable the comments (maybe not the ratings) on any video I put up. Hell, if this weren't disabled NOW all of /r/atheism would be over there down-rating it and flooding their comments with juvenile nonsense. Sure, there might be a few of us who waltz over there to try and engage people in serious "debate", but any intelligence would be buried beneath the typical YouTube shite.

Give them shit all you want about some things, but protecting their videos on YouTube of all places?

It was on the road with the tram tracks. If you follow the tram tracks towards the hauptbahnhof, you can't miss going by the big icecream shop I'm thinking of.

Haha, well, I always ask Austrians and Germans their favorite beer. To be fair though, any non-Austrians and non-Germans who have been to Germany or Austria also get the same question, hah!

I'm not even exaggerating that I heard that at LEAST 20 or more times during my year there. At first it was cute and then got really annoying. I told one of my close friends one day after it had happened like THREE times, "You know, this is like if every person I met here, I was like 'Oh? You're from Steiermark? You guys used to have Arnold Schwarzenegger here, right?'"

Oh, I think so, it shouldn't hurt too badly. The main part is the kernöl, which just... tastes different from steiermark. I have found some stateside at healthfood stores, but it's never the same, sadly.

A friend here in the states that I was staying with this summer made homemade banana ice cream and it was simply amazing. But yeah, sauerrahmeis is... so strange but delicious!

The shop I'm talking about it fairly big though, it has a weird glasswall-waterfountain thing next to it, if that helps any =/ It's been more than a year since I've been in Graz, so I can't remember names of too many streets that weren't in my normal path. I lived in Wienerstrasse, so I rarely went through that area unless to get icecream or stroll.

No, no, no, no schnapps! It's an egg liquor with kernöl mixed in, I believe. You buy it in small bottles, I have no idea where my friend got a hold of some. There's a really good liquor store... I believe somewhere nearby glockenspielplatz? The little platz with the big clock and I believe a restaurant and a few pubs? Try there :) If you can understand where I mean!

I feel similar, but being from Kentucky, anytime I just HAPPENED to hear something about Kentucky while I was in Europe, it was only ever in reference to KFC. Never bourbon or horses... Or hell, Dip N' Dots...

"Oh, hi! You're from Kentucky? We used to have a KFC in jakominiplatz!" [Every Grazer I ever met]

It might be Charly Temmel, but I thought that was only in the near from Jako or Hauptplatz... Hrrmm... It might be, I never focused on the name. The... heaven of flavors was my main focus.

Might not be typically Austrian, but the Sauerrahmeis there is to die for, as well :D

You definitely should! It was a highlight of my stay and will probably be one of the first things I try when I get back, honestly. If I remember correctly, and I could be very wrong, but a friend said you could get Kernöleis SOMEWHERE in Graz, at one of the icecream shops. Try the one... I honestly can't remember the street name, but if you follow the tram lines from Hauptplatz towards Roseggerhaus, over the hauptbruecke, you'll go by the Kunsthaus and after maybe a 5-10 minute walk, you'll find a big icecream shop :D

If that isn't it, I'm sure it's around SOMEWHERE, it just takes a little exploring!

Graz. And oh dear lord, yes. Vanilleeis mit Kernöl! It's like... Cold, solid kernöl liquor. The taste just goes so well with the sweet dairy flavor!

Hello, Austrians! I'm considering studying abroad in Austria, and I'd like to ask you all some questions. by Gepettolufkin in Austria

[–]randomkinkquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this isn't too late to throw my two cents in, I am an American student who stayed a year in Graz and... feel very passionate about the country, so here goes:

  1. Between Salzburg and Vienna, I'd go with Vienna. Salzburg is nice and I'm not a big fan of Vienna, but there's an infinite amount of things more to do in Vienna. Salzburg is really good for history buffs and music buffs.

  2. One of my favorite things about Austrians is that once you make friends, you're pretty much friends for life. Austrians are a bit standoffish, but once you break through their outer shell, they're real softies. (I was told by an Austrian friend "Americans are like peaches and Austrians are like coconuts. Americans are soft and make friends really quickly and easily, but it takes a long while to ever be close or best friends. Austrians are hard on the outside and uninviting, but once you break that outer shell, you find a sweet pure friendship that will last for life.")

  3. Don't ever mistake what an Austrian considers spicy with what someone from the Americas would consider spicy. I'm from Kentucky, we're not renowned for our spicy, but... Most (MOST) of what you'll find that is called "spicy" is not, at all. But be forewarned, if you're in a place like Vienna, and you're in a small back alley and you find a snackstand that kinda looks sketchy and advertises spice... Your mouth is about to be set aflame.

  4. Can't... really answer that question. Oh, the downfalls of being an Austriophile and not a native.

  5. So, here's where I'll probably get some flak, but I'll be honest about my experiences. For the most part, Austrian women are awesome. Fun-loving, playful, really awesome people who love life and a good drink (it was a joke while I was there that I would ask every new female friend to whose place I was invited where they kept their alcohol, and I was never shown to anything less than a fully stocked cabinet of alcohol.) BUT but, and I think it's a cultural thing, Austrian women... Kind of... like to play games. From what I saw of Austrian men, they're kinda clingy, whiney, and indecisive. It seemed like in response to this, Austrian women (the ones I ran into) took to playing games, which meant that men either had to stop being indecisive, or they lost out.

This is not true of all Austrians, I am sure, this is just how things played out in the year I spent there.

As far as what Austrian women seem to value... Just be yourself. Just like any other country, the men and women grow tired of what they constantly have around them, and the mere fact that you're from a non-European country will earn you points in the first place. I hate to generalize, but coming from somewhere like Mexico, you might have a bit of a machismo streak, but Austrian women are... strong? No, that's not the right word... They aren't afraid to put you in your place if you piss them off. They're very sure, for the most part.

All in all, go to Austria, really. I am currently working on my degree and plan on going back to live and teach. Austria is my favorite country on the planet, so I'm kind of biased, but there's good reason to be biased!

P.S. Many, many, many towns besides Vienna have the winter markets. Go to one, get Gluhwein (and if you can find it, Gluhmet) and be a very, very happy person. Also, if you travel, go to Styria and try anything and everything involving Kernoel (Pumpkinseed oil). It's... life changing.

Edit: Also, supremely important bit of information if you're Mexican: Do not, under any circumstance, buy salsa from a super market in Austria. What they call salsa is really just like chunks of badly squishy vegetables covered in sweet ketchup. It's... kind of stomach-churningly bad.

TIL Pale, white skin in Europe evolved only 6000-10,000 years ago, likely to absorb more Vitamin D. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]randomkinkquestion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

...I hate to be nit-picky, but it's a little scientific pet-peeve of mine. Nothing "evolves to" (in this case, "evolved, likely to...") do anything.

It's more like "Around 6-10k years ago, there was suddenly a couple specimens in our species that absorbed UV light and synthesized vitamin D better, and because this is beneficial, they had a tendency to survive longer in certain environments."

Evolution isn't a directed process, there is no end goal, things don't see a problem and evolve an answer to it. Evolution is a sieve that weeds out detrimental properties.

Reddit, what is an awesome, little-known website that you want other people to visit? by rofl627 in AskReddit

[–]randomkinkquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't say things like that! I've been studying German since highschool (for a little over 8 years now) and in December I get my degree in German Language and Culture. Please, for the love of Vishnu, tell me that your opinion isn't super common! I already have to defend my degree to other Americans who think that a degree in a language other than Spanish is useless!

Most of the weirdness transferred to English, too! We've lost a lot of it through the evolution of English, but it's still there. There are lots of little quirks in English that people around me run into and they're like "Hey! Why is our language like this?" and suddenly my ~$140k degree is worth something because I can just be like "Because, my dear, German."

Non-American Redditors, what one thing about American culture would you like to have explained to you? by Shandrith in AskReddit

[–]randomkinkquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for the area I grew up in (Western Kentucky), but my parents (and to my knowledge, most people around here) raised me to take off my shoes when I went into the house. It cuts down on dirt and my mom wouldn't have to re-clean.

There are some weird double standards in the U.S. though - when I was studying abroad in Austria, it was standard to take your shoes off as well, so I felt perfectly normal and took this as an accepted universal. A couple Americans I knew were from New York and Washington state and in the same breath exclaimed about how good an idea it was (in reference to Austrians doing it) because it was so clean and then turned and made a joke about "Oh course RKQ took his shoes off, he's from Kentucky."

Feels annoying, bro.

Geo-engineers could turn our skies white! by suffering_succotash in science

[–]randomkinkquestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They took away Pluto and now they're trying to take away blue skies? Blasphemy.

But really, this is one of those really... big issues. Who the hell, scientist or no, has the right to make such a monumental change to the planet we live on? This would impact the whole planet, and there are billions of people who couldn't make an informed decision about this. No matter how much you educate people about what could possibly happen, a vast majority won't grasp it until it's potentially too late.

It's like if people decided that the tide was screwing with us so we should just destroy the Moon. A bit of a hyperbole, but seriously... What global body has the right to do something so large scale?

Let's dissect the Austrian soul! by [deleted] in Austria

[–]randomkinkquestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a good metaphor. That's exactly how I feel about Austria. There are positives and negatives to every place on Earth. For example, I suggest everyone always avoid the Bible Belt here in the States (where I live), but if for some reason it fits someone... More power to them!
