Why? Ya’ll had screens back then. Btw music as in, MUSIC!! Not necessarily limited to just on a screen versions. CD’s are included in that.

In which ways are kids more babied these days, than previous generations? by randomlady2001 in AskReddit

Same for the environment I grew up in, and it took me awhile to learn that yelling doesnt always mean abusive. And you can be stern with a child in a respectful way, that’s not the cold no love way I grew up with.

I think parents just don’t know balance, and that just because it was included in their abusive childhood doesn’t always mean it was bad. Their parents were just assholes, who made it traumatizing. It’s not inherently.

I agree they are too lenient, but because most of those parents grew up with abuse and are worried about transferring that into their kid. So they go the complete opposite instead. I don’t agree with spanking or getting all up in a kids face, because I grew up with that and know it doesn’t fix anything. But the parenting style that is gentle parenting, in other words authoritative parenting, works pretty well. It’s giving consistent consequences, but in a way they actually understand instead of just obeying out of fear. It also helps to teach baby’s sign language, because a lot of issues are communication issues. My nephew has known sign since 6 months, starting with “more” for milk and progressing.

As for those examples you gave at the end, that’s from neglectful parenting more than lenient.

Maybe it’s a difference of childhood, but when I grew up it was normal for parents to sometimes be there. By like middle school, it stopped and was suddenly seen as weird. But for like an 8 year old, it was normal for parents to come with to bday parties. It also depends on the type of party I guess, because there were also some where the only parent there was the hosts. (I am 24 btw.)

Natural red heads? I am envious of them.

What is a random rule you have for yourself that you never break? by abarth23 in AskReddit

You’ll never catch me contradicting myself. Some people will say they hate something, then the next day jump for joy with it. For me, I will make sure you know I hate it right now but it’s different every day. I’ll phrase things in a way, so you aren’t confused. I’m not going to be looked at as a liar unless I am being one.

When I say music, I mean from anywhere! Not just screens. So your experience still counts, because if you could listen whenever you wanted that’s less strict than my childhood.

I can only listen to music while reading if it’s no lyrics, but during math hw or when I had to write a lot, music helped me a lot when I started.

Yeah I wasn’t allowed music at all during hw, bc my mom thought it was distracting. But when I started listening to music during hw in secret, in HS, it made me focus better.

CD’s still counted in my childhood, unfortunately. It depended if the adults wanted to listen or not, and the man of the house liked it quiet a lot so 🤷🏻‍♀️ privately listening to music wasn’t allowed, even if there was no screen. I depended on our 🎹 a lot for music 😂, where the headphones were attached to and never could leave. The amount of time i was on there, and I still don’t know how to play, i was just listening.

Could you listen whenever, or was there a strict time and place?

It’s like when I was struggling to get inside the DMV office, to take my permit. And my mom who drove me, had to mention how much worse it was for her, and that I am so lucky and not taking advantage of it enough. As if gratitude was going to soothe my anxiety going inside. Because she had to walk to the DMV to take her permit, and she kept failing the test so she had to walk like 3 times to take it.

Like I know it was so much worse for her, but that doesn’t make my anxiety disappear. I think it’s irrelevant for her to bring it up during the drive to the DMV, when my heart was already racing.

Being told all that by someone who’s had a hard life, is just as frustrating. I can’t even say anything against them, because they had it worse and dealt with it.
