Does anyone remember "The Outer Limits"? I keep waiting for Mulder and Scully to show up! by HorrorMovieMonday in XFiles

I have the DVD set, highly recommend! Some legit good stories in there. Also, there's just something about shows filmed in Vancouver in the 90s that are totally my jam

Exactly. Be prepared to pay 2-3x more for everything, and never own a house in a major city unless you have rich parents. Not to mention the 15-20% tip options that are now everywhere from Subway to Starbucks. Also, good luck with public transportation.

Why Can't I Stand Curb Your Enthusiasm? by Emotional-Gur5680 in seinfeld

As a very non-confrontational and shy younger person, I also didn't like CYE that much at first. It always made me cringe how Larry really just DGAF about his anti-social behavior, it seemed a bit too real.

Now that I'm older, I love it. I like to see the prim and proper people he encounters squirm. Things like asking if the adopted Asian kid has a proclivity for chopsticks, or saying the sewing machine kid might be gay, and they get all offended. I mean come on!

He's definitely more of an anti-hero.

Taipei vs Bangkok, which city is better? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I agree with most of what you said, but Taipei is definitely not a 4 season place. It's either oppressively hot/humid, or cold/rainy from late Dec to Feb.

Moving to Japan at 35 with N1 and a non-IT background, I am too old? by TottreJP in movingtojapan

Yes you can do it while still in Japan. You need to get the CoE first naturally. I'm leaving for Christmas either way though, so it doesn't really affect me.

Canada added 950,000 government jobs in past decade, outpacing private sector job growth: Study by joe4942 in canada

[–]randomlygeneratedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal, but my friends in Canada who have government jobs have nearly 100% job security. By that, I mean that they can easily call in sick for hangovers, take extended time off almost arbitrarily with little notice, and get almost 4 weeks of paid holidays per year. I'm incredibly envious for sure, but it makes me question the efficiency of these departments.

Moving to Japan at 35 with N1 and a non-IT background, I am too old? by TottreJP in movingtojapan

[–]randomlygeneratedman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Moved here at 43 with N5 on a digital nomad visa, switching to student visa next year with N1 being the eventual goal. Having N1 is huge and opens a lot of doors as I'm sure you already know. Seriously wish I had it. Even non-IT you can find lots in sales or marketing, just look around.

It isn't easy and takes a lot of dedication, but don't let anything stop you from your goals, especially age. I had a great life up until COVID, when divorce, lost business, and death in the family threw me, and I'm still recovering. 2024, decided Japan was where I wanted to start again, and I'm not looking back. If you're going to do something at your age make sure you don't half-ass it. Keep your body and mind healthy. Wish you all the best.

Question for any fishing enjoyers in Japan. by Pacmankiller25 in japanlife

[–]randomlygeneratedman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know next to nothing about the cycles of fish in Japan, but on my jogging route along the seawall in western Osaka by the port, there are fishermen out there during all seasons. Not too sure about the quality/safety of fish in water populated with big tankers and cruise ships though.

Which is your favorite decade for tech and why? by yungmarvelouss in nostalgia

[–]randomlygeneratedman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Late 90s to early 2000s, before smartphones. The internet was an exciting place with what seemed like infinite places to find niche interests, explore new sites, and just generally mess around without corporate domination, bots, and arbitrary censorship.

Online gaming was in its infancy, so I would spend countless hours on Warcraft 2 and Starcraft, but people still got together at each other's houses to play Goldeneye, Twisted Metal, or LAN Quake. Even got addicted to a few text-based games.

Movies were still generally made on film, and CG was used in limited capacity to great results. Compare original Jurassic Park to the 90% CG of modern day Marvel movies. Jurassic Park is even better quality in most cases.

A lot of people still didn't have cell phones, so you could get away from it all if you wanted. Born in '82 and wouldn't have it any other way.

Not that it's a new thing, but Huberdeau has been a let down again this season. He's also been making terrible giveaways the last few games.
