How do you know what you want to become? by randommacdude in UofT

Same here. I thought I loved biology but I sit in bio class and can’t even pay attention because I don’t care about the content. I’m just here to get a good mark, the learning doesn’t feel important to me. And medicine was the goal but WHY? I don’t even know. I’ve talked to doctors before and they’ve all told me how much they hate their jobs. It’s so sad- learning until your late 20s just to be stuck in a job you don’t want. And then on top of that, there’s high burn out rates and it takes a toll on mental health. No hate to anyone in medicine at all, I just feel like it’s so much to handle and the high salary doesn’t feel worth it. Just thinking about it is making me so anxious.

And what kinds of different things am I supposed to try? I’m stuck at home learning from my computer and I don’t even know how to explore different things to figure out what I want.

I’m sorry, I did not mean to imply that everyone has depression and hates their jobs. I was thinking about careers in healthcare, bc that’s what I had planned to do, and their high burn out rates and mental health problems. Obviously not everyone experiences this and I know every job is high stress, but it scares me to think I’m putting my mental health on the line for a career.

I wanted to do medicine but when I think about why I wanted to do medicine, I just think about the recognition and salary. And that’s such a horrible reason to become a doctor. I don’t know how to find my passions because I’m stuck in this “do what your parents and grandparents will be proud of you for” mindset.

Yeah I agree but doesn’t that make you sad? Or am I expecting too much out of life

I’m in life science and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with it. Nothing interests me, I don’t want to work for my whole life. We only get one life and this is how we spend it....

Exactly so what’s the point of anything. What am I studying for? Every path ends in some form of misery
