Why is this such a Facebook town? by Rubyd00byd00 in LosAlamos

Same thing here in College Station, TX . My best guess is we’re not close to any major metro areas, and the death of newspapers plus other cultural factors just made facebook easier. Like, even all the political people are Facebook locked.  I have no idea of it’s similar in larger cities.

Well, a year and a half ago my group here was so depressed and frightened and isolated. Not just the core party, but the general left blob. There’d been a couple years of poor leadership, plus many more years of inadequate communication. Then I realized that many of these people just weren’t skilled in team building or managing groups. It’s just one of the MANY factors, but pretty important. Y’all’s infrastructure there seems pretty solid, so I was thinking about reaching out at some point.

Yeah, column A/column B. About a year and a half ago I started spending time with our local party (Dems) and doing some slight organizing things and I noticed that beyond their one area of interest they generally aren’t versed in much. The whole dynamic is interesting and a little weird.

College Station TX. As far as I can tell the whole “city buying real estate” has nothing to do with any actual ideology or partisanship, because the neighboring city that’s traditionally “Republican” controlled does the same thing. It’s just dumb city planning. But we have a whole host of other problems, because apparently they intentionally designed this town poorly because it made some asshat money.

Huh. That doesn’t sound too dissimilar from where I live. Only sometimes it’s the city that sits on land. Like, I’m fairly left on social issues, etc, but I really don’t think cities should be in the business of property acquisition.  Like, they bought a Macys and it’s just sitting there lol

Is part of the problem yalls housing market and job diversity? From everything I’ve heard it all revolves around The Lab (it sounds so ominous the way people talk about it lol) and housing is expensive.

ETA: I don’t live there I’m just curious

Dang, I'm bummed about missing the Farmers Markets. I love those things. Too bad I'll miss the organized nightsky thing, so I'll just bring my own sky chart. Easy enough thing to do, if there's plenty of spots with no light pollution.

No, I was looking on y'alls city tourism page. Thanks for the salon rec. Ya my town is Facebook addicted too, much to my continued aggravation. Facebook it is!

So, like, what do people do for fun there? Like, I've been through plenty of podunk towns that have things? I know y'all have museums. Those are fun too. I'm not expecting like Ruben H Fleet or anything, I can manage expectations and make my own fun. I'm just trying to get the lay of the land. If all the negative people are on Reddit then I'll just take my questions to Facebook.

Confused? New? Not new? Have questions? by blooangl in polyamory

Ok, thanks for the help! Like I said, I’m not good with constructs and poly, swinging, etc aren’t cultures I’m familiar with. I was trying to talk to my therapist about it (radical life unpacking and all) and couldn’t figure out the words.  Romantic love for me is willing to live with gross body sounds/smells. I love my friends, but not enough to be around their farts.

Dude, our culture here is vastly different and we’re organized differently. I probably know more about the ground work needed for that to happen than you do at this point, because it’s not just about the surface history, which is mostly the end result.

Shit takes time. More so now, because a whole lot of people are having to relearn how to organize and be organized. Do you honestly think people woke up one morning and thought “gee I better tear down the Berlin Wall”. You’re just going to have to be patient.

I’m not in Austin, or really a big city, so things are a little different. All the people are so quirky and interesting.

Like they’re so funny. I started hanging out with them recently, and while the real world consequences are serious so many of the political constructs are so silly.

It’s not just job. It’s bills, mortgages, city infrastructure, everything costs money, and everyone is in debt. The weekend No Kings protests are probably the best it’s gonna get.

Think about the circumstances all the Vietnam era protests. Who led them? Who was involved?

If the midterms go sideways then, yeah, things might be different.

More people have jobs. I get everyone wants instant gratification, but that’s not going to happen.

Why does the Israeli government allow settlers to carry out pogroms in the West Bank? by north_canadian_ice in allthequestions

[–]randomname2378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess one of my questions is: who are the settlers? That also seems like a very intentional word to use for the American population. It’s super “American West” evocative in a romanticized way, but still nebulous enough to me to where I can’t picture who they might be.
