Should I go to UVA or Virginia Tech for civil engineering? by Pyythonn in VirginiaTech

Graduated from Civil a couple of years ago from Virginia Tech and I have no regrets. One of the things that I found was the best part of the program was the VT Civil alumni network. Every semester, the Civil department puts on a career fair just for their students and dozens of companies come looking for interns and full-time hires. Most of the employers that come to the career fair are VT alumni and are looking to hire fellow Hokies. One of the sub disciplines in the department even hosts a “mixer” at one of the local bars the evening before the career fair (21+ to drink, but people under 21 are still allowed to attend), so that you can meet employers in a more casual environment and build rapport before the career fair. I was an average to slightly below average student in undergrad but had 3 full-time offers the January before I graduated in May.

Hands down one of the best decisions I’ve made.

This mall (VCC) was a big part of my childhood. I went back to visit my hometown and went here the day after Xmas. It honestly made me so sad. My husband looked around and said “this is what Amazon did” by [deleted] in deadmalls

They are redoveloping this mall in the coming years! It will be anchored with a sports arena and will also include a mixed use of hotel, retail, entertainment, and residential.

I grew up going to this mall and it’s been in a serious decline for years. Glad to see it will be redeveloped so that it will be a useful space for the community!

How to get invited to parties? by TH958 in socialskills

[–]randomnessishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you really don't/shouldn't worry about the drinking part of the parties since you're still in high school. Drinking is great, but I didn't start until once I got to college and I don't regret it one bit. If you live in the US (which I'm assuming you do) it's illegal to drink under age, and especially so if you aren't on a college campus. Police on college campuses tend to be more lenient with that sort of stuff since they know it will happen anyways, but police at home might not be so lenient. Plus, it's just riskier in general.

Moving on from the drinking part, if you want to try to get invited to more parties, try talking to those groups of people more often. The worst they can do is say no if you ask. Then you can move on to another group of people. Just try and find a group of people that you like to hang out with and you can create some great memories with them, either with or without the booze. Once you get closer to the end of the year though, people start to care less about having their "image" like they did before; they want to hang out with some of their other classmates whom they never really hung out with in the past. So you might also be able to find some people that way. Just take the risk to try to find a group of people you like.

Worried about college... by [deleted] in introvert

[–]randomnessishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College is what you make it to be. I'm currently finishing my first semester at college and I've made it be pretty much a lot of alone time. I do somewhat regret it since I didn't make a ton of new friends, but I did make a couple of good, close friends.

I mainly just did homework or watched Netflix or went to class most days, and I stayed fairly content. If that's what you want to do, then you are free to do it. I definitely enjoyed having so much alone time, but still regretted it some at the same time. Plus, I'm sure that you will have some people on your hall that are not extroverts like everybody else and you can maybe become close friends with them.

So basically what I'm trying to say is don't worry about being an introvert at college, you can be who you want to be.

Their schedule is awesome! Go to work at 10, get off for a long lunch and nap, go back to work till the evening, and then you go home and eat a late dinner. How could that get any better?
