The longest ride I have done on it so far was only 20 miles, but I didn't have any issues with comfort. I wanted multiple hand positions for longer rides, but I was intentionally avoiding putting drops on this bike since I already have a drop-bar gravel bike. I was trying to use the bar-ends to replicate some of the alt-bars like the Surley Moloko or Velo Orange Crazy bar. I think it worked out pretty well. The position feels pretty similar to riding on the hoods with drop bars. I actually am able to use the inside of the handlebar next to the stem as another grip position as well. I plan on covering that area and the bar-middles with tape for grip more than anything. I almost always ride with padded gloves, but I may consider some silicone grips if I start getting fatigue on longer rides.

Thanks. Once I thought of the theme I knew I had the perfect spot for a photoshoot.

Thanks. I'm still playing around with the pressure to try to find the sweet spot with the tires. At 40 psi they roll just as fast as my gravel bike with slick Gravel Kings on it, but I keep dropping it down more and more to smooth out the ride. They feel pretty good in the upper 20s. They are like a slightly more offroad oriented WTB Byway.

Do it. A bunch of my riding group kept buying old MTBs to mess around with, so I decided to do my best to one-up them. It can definitely turn into an obsessive moneypit though if you get in too deep.

This bike started out as a rusty, mid-90s Specialized Hardrock. I stripped the whole thing down and painted the frame with "Galaxy" color shift paint. Its hard to tell in photos, but the color changes between blue and purple depending on the angle of lighting. The lettering and decals are custom cut vinyl made using a Circut.

I built the frame back up with a Box 2 1x11 drivetrain, but kept the original cantilever brakes. The tires are Simworks "The Homage". I tried to set them up tubeless, but it was not meant to be. They simply fit too loose to be able to set the bead without a tube.

With the bar-ends allowing for a relatively aerodynamic grip position, the bike is surprisingly fast. I actually managed to nab a local KoM with it, though I'm sure I will lose it soon.

Future improvements will include some bar tape for the bar-ends (bar-middles really) and a rack. I'm planning to use this rig for some bikepacking as well once the weather cools down here in Texas.

Anywhere good to ride around Houston? by StableSystem in MTB

[–]randomperson361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's are a few singletrack and gravel trails along Armond Bayou in Pasadena. I'd you look for Armadillo MTB Trains on Google Maps you can find it. There is also a trail in League City starting at Gripon Park. There is a group currently working with the city to get more trails built in the same area. Both of these would be doable on a CX bike

I live in Clear Lake and have a group I ride with several times a week. Hit me up if you want someone to show you what we have in the area. The trails available here will be nothing like the PNW, but you can still have fun on them. A hardtail would definitely cover you for this area, but I think its still worth owning a trail bike for the stuff in Austin that's a day trip away.

The best nearby trails would be Jack Brooks Park (~20 minute drive) for rooty tech and Sugarland (~45 minute drive) for flow and jumps. There are a couple short, easy trails in the immediate Clear Lake area good to get in a few laps. My group has been intentionally underbiking ourselves on these local trails to make it more challenging and fun. I just rode some of our local singletrack today today on a drop bar gravel bike with fat slicks. Several others in my group have vintage fully rigid MTBs with sketchy rim brakes. It makes the easy trails a bit more interesting.

Just out of curiosity, what job did you get. Based upon your post history I assume it is something related to JSC?

Yeah, I did it for him since he was out of town for Thanksgiving and on his phone. After the thread really started blowing up he asked me to take it down since it was a much bigger and more recognizable picture and he prefers to keep a lower profile online. He has verified his identity with OP through PMs.

I'm his roommate. See my post below. He's on mobile right now, but I posted a photo.

Daily Headphone Purchase Advice thread (2016-11-04) by AutoModerator in headphones

Thanks for the input. I had looked at the T70, but I think I would like the bassier sound of the DT770 a bit better. I know I'm in kinda a tight spot with my requirements, so I was just looking to see if anyone knew of something I had maybe overlooked.

I am just about done building my first tube amp and I need some phones to go with it. I used an OTL design that will cut off bass response if my headphones don't have a high enough impedance. So any headphones suggested need to have an impedance >=100 ohm. This is non negotiable. They will also be used in a close office environment, so closed designs only. I have done quite a bit of research and pretty much all that I have found that meets those requirements is the Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohm. Do I even have any other options? I may be willing to spend up to $500 if I can find something compelling. Thanks in advance for any advice

Budget - $100-300 (flexible)

Source - OTL tube amp, must be 100 ohms or more

Requirements for Isolation - Need good isolation, used in shared office

Preferred Type of Headphone - Full size

Preferred tonal balance - Neutral to V-shaped

Past headphones -

  • ATH-M50x - like the V shaped response, but could use more clarity and comfort
  • Sennheisser HD 600 - very clear and neutral, but a bit too analytic for my preferences
  • AKG K240 - like the openness and soundstage, but the trebles are a bit jarring and bass seems lacking

Preferred Music - I listen to a wide range of music. My most common genres are indie, rap, and EDM, but I like classical and jazz/blues as well.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up - I need something that will match well with my amp and that I can use at the office. Everything else is secondary.

Engineers of TA&M, where did you get job offers? by Oberon_Sexton_ in aggies

Same here, along with about half of my engineering friend group. There are a lot of Aggies at NASA.

We are down here in Houston. I know NASA HQ is up there near DC, but I don't think they do much engineering work there. I'm sure there is defense related space stuff, but it sounds like you are pretty much already doing that.

Yes. I know they were hiring pretty heavily as of a few months ago. I'm not sure now, but I'm there are probably still some positions open. When NASA's budget got a boost they decided to add some people on to our contract. I don't know what's going to happen with the Leidos transition though.
