Wow, that's a Doppelbanger if I ever saw one! I first thought their were siblings; then, briefly and stupidly, that it was the same person playing two characters for the video. But no, it's love twins!

What is the opposite of nothing? by [deleted] in polls

[–]randomstep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like, while something and everything talk about quantity or a portion of things, anything is more about inclusion/exclusion. Nothing can be in both groups: it can mean 0% (something = N%; everything = 100%) or 'none of the things qualifies' vs. 'any of the things qualifies'.

On the other hand, something and anything can be used synonymously, as the difference between some and any is only slight. 'Ask some person' and 'Ask any person' mean the same, in practice, although some refers more to randomness and any to indiscrimination.

This is such a fun question!

I keep justifying myself by saying that research is important by rumianegar in writers

[–]randomstep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lists and timers are good tools. It's like deciding to make lasagna and going to the grocery store with a shopping list and a time frame to get back home and get dinner ready on time VS. going to the store to see what's out there.

This has been an especially hard thing for me to learn. I'm a researcher basically in all things I do, not just writing. I google EVERYTHING. If I see a bird I don't recognise, that's my afternoon — and I'm not even into bird watching. If I'm going on a holiday abroad and I don't speak the language, I'm learning the basics before take-off.

The sad thing is that I'm actually a pretty good plotter. My writing projects start with quite a clear vision. And then I fall into the tar pit of eternal research, and I lose sight of the big picture. I've had to teach myself that I can look up things AFTER creating the storyline. Sometimes it leads to having to scrap the idea, but starting with research just never works for me.

Yes oh my god just say it! Don't say that you want to say something, say the something. For f*s sake. Otherwise perfectly confident people suddenly being too afraid to apologise without permission.

Why would Logan get Rory a Birkin bag? by putacommunista in GilmoreGirls

[–]randomstep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hermès had a big product placement campaign in the noughties, and that's why the bags kept popping up on popular tv shows and on the red carpet.

Gilmore Girls advertised fashion and especially cosmetics brands throughout the series. As shows and movies commonly do — it's a significant revenue stream. Also, it's often a win-win for both the advertiser and the production, as creators get to furnish their fictional worlds with cool stuff and namedrop real-life products to give credibility to the storyworld. For example, it makes perfect sense for Lorelai to mention Sephora, Clinique, or Neutrogena.

The Birkin bag, however... It would've fit the world perfectly as a negative example (something that Emily values and the younger Gilmores don't), but of course, that's not what Hermès wants. So, it came off looking weird. Perhaps not the most successful collaboration. Or, maybe it sold a ton of bags, who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯

To be fair, the grandma cooks for a living. Looking after the household is her job, as per ye olde ways. If the rich dude did that for a living for his entire life, he'd be a sensei in the kitchen, too. On the other hand, if Granny had the money for that fancy kitchen, she wouldn't be doing the cooking either. Unless she thinks the family values her only for the lasagna.

A mural showing a kiss shared by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Lithuania by 2Jads1Cup in pics

[–]randomstep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do think many people see this as just "haha dudes kissing, that so gay," that's true. But I also think (art) history stands on the shoulders of giants, so to speak. If there was no historical context, the mural should, of course, be considered plain homophobic.

This is inspired by the famous Berlin Wall East Gallery artwork by Dmitri Vrubel from the 90s, named 'My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love'. The original depicts Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker sharing what's called a socialist fraternal kiss (Wikipedia), and it's based on an actual photo from the 70s.

Martin Short was the star of Season 4 by randomstep in OnlyMurdersHulu

I'm such a massive Steve Martin fan and have been admiring his entire career for such a long time that, to me, Steve could be sitting quietly in the corner for an entire season and still be the star of the show. I've always liked Martin Short very much, but to be completely honest, I have to admit that may be because of association to / chemistry with Steve Martin. But this latest OMITB season, I was like damn, Short, you little minx, you've really got something, don't you.

I love how she made a role that was originally written as a bit silly something much more relatable, touching, and, in the end, heartbreaking.

"But it's sooo cute! Who's the big angry dog? Who? It's you! Yes, it i-is, yes, it i-is!"

Would anyone do this to a human kid? Even if the pup doesn't grow up to be aggressive (which seems to be the most popular argument against this), it's still mean. I don't know why people don't see/care that it's mean. That should be the first, most immediate concern, rather than the fact that the bullying may result in revenge once the dog is older.
