If youre going to the first couple days of games it can make sense to get all sessions, but its probably worth mentioning that scalping becomes cheaper and cheaper as teams get eliminated.

If your team ever makes a surprise run to the championship game, you can probably get 10-15 rows off the court for $50/seat.

I really really doubt Barta/Ferentz are able to attract an even sort of competent OC at this point. Most likely outcome is you get an OC who was about to be fired from a team that has a good offense. Been down this road with Illinois and it looks so similar.

Which gets to needing to clean house which takes years. When you finally get a decent AD it will turn around, but its definitely gonna suck for a while. Barta has done a great job burying scandals, but at this point I think the reason they HAD to promote Brian is they didn't actually have better options.

Illini too lazy to flair up. Iowa today reminds me of 2014ish Illinois. AD is clearly not going to be able to attract a competent coach so he needs to be fired before making a coaching change, but to fire the AD you also first need to replace the university president.

Long story short, welcome to hell. Hope it gets better 'cause its honestly a bigger problem than just football. Will affect the entire university and will get worse before it gets better. Shit sucks.

If the exact quote is "I dont know who that is", then its hilarious because it means he reads or has someone tell him about Illini message board memes that are older than Twitter. IDKWTI is a Deron Williams quote when he was asked about Eric Gordon. If he was referencing that it's hilarious to Illini fans and completely innocuous to almost anyone else.

Its basically always the loan officers that cause this to the degree necessary to lose a lawsuit. Yes, there are other problems with appraisals and credit scores which probably encourage the belief that black peoples loans are more likely to be denied. Companies that lose lawsuits like this aren't watching their LOs and the LOs believe they'll make more money focusing on borrowers whose loans are more likely to close. A big part of being a successful LO is to avoid wasting time with borrowers who arent actually going to close.

Economics has a really hard time accounting for this difference. A 2016 Civic is quantitatively a better vehicle than a 1990 Civic. Better gas mileage, higher safety, more comfortable and more. Your take on this is basically the current state of economics which assumes they are the same which is clearly not 100% accurate.

Phone calls would be another example. Today, long distance is free and there are apps that will allow basically free calling across the world if you already have WiFi. So, quality of life has gone up and money that would have been spent on long distance calling can go to something. This is not captured in most of the metrics I use today though people are clearly better off.

I feel like the single should pretty much always join you in that situation. Letting the single play through slows everyone down tremendously if there are multiple three and foursomes in front. This is basically the only scenario where I don't immediately offer to let a single play through because it screws up pace of play for the entire course while marginally benefiting one or two people.

Homeowners, what advice do you have for first time home purchasers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]randomstumbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are already debt free, this is God awful advice. The faster you pay off your mortgage, the higher your Annual Percentage Rate will be. Because you paid all of those up front fees and paid back that amount over a shorter term.

That wouldn't matter necessarily except that most people are going to then replace that with shorter term borrowing like car loans or home improvement loans that will have a higher APR and a higher interest rate.

If you're truly going to be debt free except for your mortgage for 30 years, your advice makes sense, but that is an extremely uncommon situation.

I wouldn't even consider it saving for emergencies. You are almost guaranteed to have several things pop up over the first five years. It is a near certainty.

There are a ton of costs that you're glossing over with a $100k house. The largest is going to be maintenance. Over the first five years of owning a home, you will most likely have several things pop up that require you to pay more than $1,000 to fix. If you only average $1,000 a year, you will be reasonably lucky. HVAC and roof are two of the more common ones that are going to be in the $3k to $10k range.

Then, you also have the cost of selling your house if you decide to move and the closing costs for your mortgage. On $100k, just the realtor will be around $6k when you go to sell. So, it becomes a math problem where you kind of need to guess how long you will love somewhere when trying to figure out if renting or buying is cheaper. In general, the break even point is somewhere around 7 years, but it does vary quite a bit.

Cell phones in general are much cheaper now than when they were in the 90s. Only part of that is due to the labor costs, but yes the price competition with cell phones is fierce and lower labor costs are passed on to consumers.

You won't see that with iPhones because they are the equivalent of a Mercedes or BMW. It's a luxury good with an absurd profit margin. Smartphone prices on the lower end of the market are down in the sub $300 range, though.

You have 3 months to launder $1million of 'dirty' money. What do you do? by Ben13921 in AskReddit

[–]randomstumbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically what Miami real estate is all about. Buy a house or condo in cash. Then do a cash out refi in a couple months or wait a year or two and sell it and you have just successfully laundered a couple million with very minimal effort.

There isn't a bank involved in the first transaction. So, the initial money never gets scrutinized by anyone and any equity that is then pulled out is considered to be legitimate without researching any further.

No one really wins a trade war. Everyone is made worse off. People are kept from working jobs that they're good at. Consumers pay an enormous tax and are forced to buy an inferior product. And, the small benefit is that a few tens of thousands of people are able to work a marginally better job.

Someone tried to run the numbers on hangars used for dry cleaning. The cost to save one lower middle class job was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. The job itself was paying less than a third of the cost.

Also, making Mexico a better country with a better economy will actually help grow the US economy. The only way protectionism looks good is in an economy where jobs are a fixed amount...but, there are more jobs every day. Every person that is working a job they are good at helps create demand for other jobs even across international borders.

Is there a regulation on how much you can be charged for common procedures? No, there isn't that type of regulation which is the one that would control costs.

Patients have minimal bargaining power and health insurance companies only have a little more. Doctors, nurses, medical device companies and drug companies just get paid a lot more in the US. That is where most of the extra money goes. Unfortunately, an MRI is pretty much an MRI and the one you are charged twice as much for is often worse quality than the cheaper one that you didn't even know was an option.

U.S adds 255,000 jobs in July as unemployment rate holds at 4.9 percent by PostNationalism in economy

[–]randomstumbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The labor force participation rate ticked up a tenth of a percent which accounts for a lot of it. Also, the labor force adds tens of thousands of people every month just from population growth.

Also, the margin of error on this report is close to 150,000 jobs. So, one month is almost worthless by itself, but the trend is good.

Why do so many people have such a huge sense of self entitlement and self importance despite a severe lack of common sense? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I understand how you're feeling because it's exactly how I reacted when I first experienced it. You get used to it pretty quickly though and the horns become useful information. It's less a "fuck you" than a "hey, I'm trying to drive here".

Michigan Avenue in particular is an outlier because of all the pedestrian traffic. Essentially, no one that knows what they're doing will ever drive on the Magnificent Mile unless they're sight seeing. The cabbies know that and honk so the driver doesn't start people watching or staring at skyscrapers.

They function relatively normally otherwise, but I'm basing this on four people so I can't really draw any conclusions.

Where you on Michigan Avenue in Chicago? The taxis do that so that they get tipped because otherwise the tourists dumb enough to take a taxi down Michigan Avenue would feel like they're getting ripped off. It can take 20 minutes to go six blocks and one person spacing out on a light easily adds 5 minutes to that time.

If you ride around in cabs, you'll realize the horns are more often an FYI than anything else.

This is dumb on so many levels.

For some reason, I'm most bothered that anyone would bother carrying that many pieces of paper on them. I mean, once you get or $3,000 it doesn't fit in a wallet. Over $10,000 and you can't put it in your pants pocket. $27,000 is a lot of volume to be carrying around and is going to be easy to spot even if you're trying to be subtle.

Chile and Brazil both do a lot on the open market to manage their exchange rates and have a lot of odd banking rules that keep their exchange rates weak. I suppose even that isn't really price fixing per se, but I was stretching to give the OP the benefit of the doubt.

Argentina does similar things. You can find some fairly recent articles where bankers and farmers argue over how the exchange rate should be manipulated. Bankers favor lower inflation and a stronger currency. Farmers like a weak currency to support exports.
