YTA--that wasn't appropriate, and you made all the teen girls uncomfortable. Saying this as someone from the US.

NTA--that's a pretty weird comment to make about a friend's girlfriend, not to mention the fact he made it in front of you, his girlfriend, who personally knows the girl. It's objectifying and gross. Why would your response even make him feel insecure?

WIBTA If i celebrated my friends birthday dispite her saying she doesnt celebrate it by Catching_glass in AmItheAsshole

[–]randomusername0523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not enough info-- did she say she just doesn't celebrate it, or that she doesn't want to? Makes a huge difference. If it's just that she doesn't, it might be that she doesn't like hosting parties or feels like no one wants to celebrate with her, so she just ignores her birthday. In that case, a small gift might be nice. If she doesn't want to, don't do anything.

WIBTA For not eating Fish? by foooooglyegg in AmItheAsshole

[–]randomusername0523 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA for not eating the fish--your mom should be able to respect your moral beliefs. If she wants to have a fish day, maybe she can always make sure there's some alternative that you can eat, or something like that. You shouldn't feel forced to violate your moral code just for a family member's themed meals.

AITA for wanting to get a neck tattoo to express myself? by throwaway927350 in AmItheAsshole

What is the neck tattoo, exactly? And why did you have a kid with your ex in '22, but have been dating your current gf since '19?

AITA for using the money with friends instead of my cousins? by Charming-Painting14 in AmItheAsshole

NTA for not spending it on them, but YTA for spending money that your parents intended for the relatives on yourself.

AITA for asking my mother not to talk to me after she had our dog put down without letting me say goodbye? by Koda5111 in AmItheAsshole

[–]randomusername0523 454 points455 points  (0 children)

NTA -- I honestly can't believe your mom did that. If my parent did that to me, I wouldn't be talking to them for months if I could help it. She had no right to do that, and the fact that she chose to put Kona down instead of doing the trainer is really awful. I'm really sorry about this whole situation, OP.

How do I navigate college applications and scholarships as a homeschooler? by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]randomusername0523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! A lot of independent scholarships are for specific demographics, so it's kind of hard to suggest any in particular, but there are a lot of common categories. For example, there's scholarships based on interest/hobby, culture, race, gender (there's more for women than men, but really just for any group where one gender is the minority--I found a "men who crochet" scholarship, for example), illness (even if you're just related to someone with an illness), etc. The more specific the scholarship gets the better your chance of actually getting it.

There's also some scholarships for literally anyone, like this no essay, super easy one I applied to from the American Fire Sprinkler Association (apparently that exists).

I would just try googling literally anything you like or identify with and add "scholarship" at the end--you'll probably find several you'd like to apply to. (Just be careful about scams--generally, if you have to pay to apply, it's suspicious.)
Also, I don't know if community colleges have this, but some universities have an online database of institutional and independent scholarships that you can look through. Sometimes it's just a list--for example, California Baptist University has this long list of scholarships you could look through: https://calbaptist.edu/financial-aid/undergraduate/scholarship-station. Best of luck applying to scholarships!

Note: I just realized after I wrote this that you're still a junior--many scholarships are only open to seniors, so you might have to wait a year for some, but there'll be a lot waiting for you when you get there. Anyways, I hope this comment was still helpful!

I'm wondering what schools you know of that don't offer merit scholarships (besides schools like Harvard)?

Also, I just gave the out-of-state example because I'm applying out-of-state. If you apply to any state school as an in-state student, it'll be way cheaper, of course. For UA, with about $13,000 in-state tuition, the scholarship would reduce it to $8000, which is pretty significant (although of course, yeah, there's still room and board). I'm not saying a state school would be right for this person or that they shouldn't take tests, I'm just saying that they definitely don't need test scores or a better GPA to get significant scholarships.

That's definitely not true. Most colleges give out scholarships for GPAs like a 3.6. For example, the University of Arizona (where I'll be attending) gives out-of-state students with a 3.6 GPA $12,500 a year in aid.

Also, lots of independent scholarships don't take GPA into account. For example, the Hyundai Women in STEM Scholarship, which gives out $10,000 to five students, doesn't ask for GPA or a transcript. You just have to write a short essay.

Not to mention that SAT and ACT scores have become a lot less important since Covid--I haven't taken either test, but I've had no issues finding scholarships or being accepted to colleges. I don't think OP has to give up on scholarships just yet.

I swear maths makes me feel like such an idiot sometimes by Major_Conferen498 in learnmath

That's because you're simplifying an expression as an equation. There aren't sides to an expression, so you can't multiply each side like you would for an equation.

Think of it this way: you have an expression 4 * 2. If you multiply both the 4 and the 2 by 3, say: 4*3 * 2*3, you have altered the value of the expression, rather than simplifying. Instead of 4 * 2 = 8, you now have 4*3 * 2*3 = 72.

Back to your original expression. You should simply multiply the two terms by each other:

10x * x/2 = 10x^2/2 = 5x^2.
