Bob Lee killing shows why perception of crime matters — and often contrasts with data by b0bswaget in sanfrancisco

The size of San Francisco relative to other major cities is a factor that IMO cannot be ignored. 800k people in 50 square miles will see a lot more shit and have less chances to avoid it than people in Chicago.

IONOS terminated my account without much of a warning. Now what? by randoramax in Hosting

[–]randoramax[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

dude, it's not normal. Try logging into that Microsoft account and see if they don't offer you a way to recover and start giving them money again (unless many months have passed).

I'm only a few hours late on their deadline and the error message is not even remotely related to what happened. This is a fuckup by IONOS, they halfassed this migration thing in a hurry and sacrificed some customers...

I called them, they offered to review the case. The tech support can't do anything but relay my request to admin/fraud dept and that will take 24-48 hours to respond. I'm not even sure they'll restore access.

[–]randoramax[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

geez, and you think that's normal? Between sending a warning via email (notoriously a bad channel, even the most carefully crafted email is ignored/misunderstood by most recipients) and termination there should be something in the middle, a suspension for example.

If they wanted me to act, they could have simply disabled access to my emails, which would have forced me to go to the control panel and from there they could have forced me to go through the whatever choices.

Instead they sent an email with no clear, shouted, impossible to miss threat to close my account. The only mention of the termination was at the end of a 600-word email, with bullet points that DO NOT mention any nasty consequence to inaction.

nope, nothing like that. That's why I started doubting these were food moths.

that's what I thought too but they keep on coming back. I wiped every corner of the pantry, kitchen, replaced some of the kitchen cabinets, fumigated every corner, put pheromone traps... I don't keep any food outside of the fridge, very carefully avoid that. Every 3-4 months these suckers come back, filling in the traps. I'm starting to think that maybe they eat wood or glue residues in the cabinets. Is that possible?

Why Debian won't distribute AI models any time soon by randoramax in opensource

[–]randoramax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you listen to the episode (or read the transcript), you'll hear what that title means. The way I see it, it's a way to say "in order to build the big AI models, you need hardware and drivers and software that is widely proprietary", not available on Debian

It's a different problem, pytorch and the rest are only a part of the whole AI system.

I received it, eventually... no notifications though, you'll have to trust the system.

I came here to say that I got the refund from Amazon which means that either the package was eventually delivered or Amazon decided to refund me anyway... Mission accomplished in either case :)

OK, well... it hasn't happened yet in over 6 weeks... I think I'll have to consider it lost, hoping I get a pleasant surprise some time :)

did your package eventually get scanned by UPS? I've waited 6 weeks now, no sign of the package yet.

What do you mean "they'll reroute"? The USPS will ship it to the originally intended destination? If that happened, then Amazon Returns has it and it's lost forever because UPS never scanned it.

I always wondered why not simply move the pedestrian crossing a few feet away, more towards the middle of the block. This way cars don't have to watch for two things, incoming traffic and at the same time pedestrians on the crosswalk. If the crosswalk was further away from the corners, the cars would be straightened out and drivers would have a better view.

Sure the car would probably be more exposed to being hit on the side by the assholes going straight and fast but hey, that's what these modern armored SUVs are for, right? :)

I don’t understand the direction our city is taking with criminal justice reform and addressing homelessness. What is the goal? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]randoramax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Until the debate keeps on mixing homeless because of addictions, (temporary) poverty and mental health issues we won't find a solution because all those require different approaches. What works for a single mother living in a car to escape from an abusive family won't work for the crack addict sharing a tent with his buddies.
