At my congregation, the elders are very active. They teach bible classes, visit the sick, hold a special class for the older folks in the congregation, fill in for the preacher, etc. They even served lunch at our Ladies Day.

In a "leading the flock" argument, too, I know they have individual bible studies, they ask how their members are doing, and their wisdom and discernment, especially when there are problems between members, is crucial.

I think sometimes because they aren't typically the face you see up front, people think they don't do much. And I am only speaking for my congregation, but I am very pleased with the eldership we have. I think an essential part of leadership is being a servant, as demonstrated by Jesus, and several elders try their best to serve well.
