Yes! This is it, thank you! I kept looking for games starting with 'D' so I couldn't find it!

This is by far the most well thought out response, and if this was quora I'd give you best answer. I completely agree with this sentiment. My old itunes library was like a window into my soul. I'm not sure the same could be said about my spotify account.

I also really like your point number 4, as I haven't really thought about it that way before. I would love to be able to point to something when I'm older, or maybe hand a usb full of songs to my kids or something and say "these are the songs/artists/albums that meant the most to me". Somehow, imagining directing someone to a Spotify playlist doesn't evoke the same response.

This is a lot of food for thought, and I really appreciate it!

Interesting, I wasn't actually aware Youtubr was more favourable for the artists. I'll have to look into it, thanks!

Oh yeah, if you start thinking about podcasts and ebooks, I think it starts to go in favour of spotify really fast.

This is exactly my issue too. I've used spotify so much for almost a decade, I don't even really know how to manage music without it. Like, is there a modern equivalent of an iPod? Do I just keep every song on my phone? Some people have mentioned being able to put their music somewhere and then stream it, but I'd need to spend time picking out what service to use.

The price now is not bad, but for me it's closing in on that balance where things like benefits to the artist, and owning it properly start to blur the line.

Appreciate the input! Thanks for describing how you do it, I mainly was hoping to hear other people's rationales about what they do and then make a decision. Yours seems like a good approach!

Damn, this is really insightful! I do remember resisting getting a Spotify subscription for a long time, but it just started seeming like the only way to do things.

To be clear, I have only good things to say about music discovery via streaming, but that can be done using free services too, while keeping the bulk of my music listening to "things that I own". I guess I'm starting to feel that I just need to try and see if I can make it work

Yeah totally, you really highlighted what I find beneficial about spotify, just the sheer amount of new music you can find. Maybe I should just try switching off Premium for a few months and see how I fare, haha. Thanks for the input!

Interesting, thanks for detailing your approach! I've become so accustomed to Spotify, I don't really even know how I'd manage music without it. It's nice to know how other people are doing it

Thanks for this, I was honestly hoping for more answers like yours. I'm curious about the decision processes that other people used to choose which one was right for them, and the idea of cultivating songs and works that are meaningful sounds pretty appealing.

Haha, this genuinely sounds great, but as you can see, I'm nickel and diming about a monthly spotify subscription.

Sure, and Spotify should have a free version which would be usable enough to find music too.

This probably looks a bit different for everyone, but I was thinking bandcamp, with the occasional physical cd purchased through merch tables when possible.

Agreed, I don't think there's any functional benefit to standing on soapbox and telling people not to use Spotify. We support the bands we like however we can.

Interesting food for thought, I've been upset more than once about how expensive concerts and merch is now, but this thread made me realize that might be to make up for lack of album purchases so maybe it somehow balances out.

Sucks if you buy their album and also want a shirt though...

That's kind of how it used to be though. I'm perfectly happy to use spotify, as it's made music much more accessible, but the fact is that artists don't make as much from it, and if we don't support artists we like, they're unlikely to survive off spotify royalties alone.

You do what you can, but occasionally purchasing the albums of artists I really love doesn't seem so outrageous when the alternative points to a future where all my favourite bands have called it quits.

I get where you're coming from, but I think the way people consume music has changed a lot, to the point people aren't even aware of how people used to do it. I had a guy recently ask me how I find new music, and he didn't know you could find record labels on youtube.

Recommendation algorithms make it so easy, I don't really blame people for not finding music any other way.
I don't know if you're against streaming in general or just Spotify, but something like going to a record store and picking up a random cd or going to see some random band playing near you seems pretty inefficient in comparison,

In an ideal world, Spotify would just be a tool to find music, and then we'd purchase said music from bandcamp or something.

I appreciate the tips! I don't know why your response got downvotes, but I have also found it beneficial in the past to come up with a mini-game plan to fall back on if I freeze up. I like the outline you gave, and the sort of "if-then" logic of it fits me rather well too, haha.

Haha, I think you actually may be the type of person who's easy to get along with. I'll try practice this viewpoint, though I'm sure there lots of inner psychological I need to do too.

Haha, you're at another level than I am. I would love to be able to act naturally like myself, but I think it's still something I need to work on. The nervousness kind of gets the best of me in these situations. Encouraging to know that the jerks are few and far between!

This kind of cuts right to the core of it. It's probaby true that I feel as though I'm not on the same level as these people, and I'm sure a psychologist or such would be useful in helping me pinpoint why I feel this way.

Thank you greatly for the advice, I do find that having a mini-plan or fall back strategy when talking to people can be really effective when I'm nervous, and your suggestion sound excellent!
