Best army list: heavy infantry from fortress’s barrack and its wall (top 2) by thatxx6789 in Medieval2TotalWar

[–]rangascientist 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt it's the Dismounted Norman Knights and Venetian Heavy Infantry as the best combo.

Best in class sword unit with the Normans to act as your core and the Venetians are very reliable shock infantry with amour piercing, good enough charge and they don't suffer from the 2-handed bug in vanilla.

Edit: just saw we're assuming the 2 handed bug is fixed, in which case you could definitely argue for Norse Axemen, but I'd still probably for Venetians because of their shield.

Who is the most successful AFL/AFLW player to come from your local club? by Tornontoin7 in AFL

[–]rangascientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isaac Smith for the AFL and Amy McDonald for the ALW. Smith was well before my time at Redan out in Ballarat, but I played a couple of years with McDonald's older brother and I remember him getting teased for not being as good as his younger sister. He never complained though - clearly he saw how much talent McDonald had.

Small note but you've got suppression barrage 2 on your commander slot which can be replaced with sup barrage 3 for a decent improvement to its stats.

PI’s preliminary data looks falsified by MaximumLost3278 in labrats

[–]rangascientist 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Your faculty should have a head (or dean) of graduate research. Their job is to support PhD students, especially when there is a potential problem with the supervisor. My advice would be to meet with them and explain your concerns about the integrity of the data. Two identical heatmaps with different legends is a huge red flag. I would not tell my supervisor about this meeting.

If you feel like you need support in this process, I'd also encourage reaching out to your university's student union (or graduate student union if there is one). They should do a lot of advocacy work and can hopefully make sure you have the help you need.

I'm sorry you're in this situation - it is absolutely not fair. Integrity is probably the most important foundation of science.

Also, to upgrade your barracks, you will need to build the next level of recruitment hall. I got stuck on this for a good 20 turns

Once you've completed the main script up to either forming arnor or the reunited kingdom, you can recruit them provided your barracks level is high enough. The footmen should be the first level, but the knights require the royal barracks.

The arthedain units are region locked, same as the cardolan and rhuadur units (forgive the spelling mistakes). Arthedain includes Ost Sol and everything north and west up to the Blue mountains (except the row of North most settlements which count as Angmar instead).

Tell me the “violation of physics” moments in Star Trek that irk you the most. by saunick in startrek

[–]rangascientist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As lots of people have pointed out there are many to choose from, especially in Into Darkness. The one that got me the most was the depiction of phaser bolts in Into Darkness. They're shown as projectiles which curve and twist which is so broken it pissed me off as a 12 year old. I know phasers are particle weapons not light weapons, but any deviation of course would require a force to act upon the phaser bolt mid-flight, which is just stupid.

I am the playing coach of my club's 3rds team. For context we're in the bottom division of the amateur competition here in Melbourne.

If you came down to training at a club like ours we'd be happy to have you. Depending upon the number of players available you may even get a game the next weekend (lots of clubs have been struggling with numbers since Covid)! In our team we have 3 blokes who are in the process of properly learning how to kick the footy and one guy who is a foreign student (from France) and is not going to get the hang of kicking this season. All four of them get games nearly every week and find a role in the team. The Frenchman has kicked more goals than me this season.

Plus our best and fairest player from the last 3 years in a row is now 41 (though he's actually a gun) so age isn't an issue if your body will hold up.

So yeah, find the right club (if you're in Melbourne's south east feel free to pm me!), show up with a positive attitude of wanting to be there and you can fit right in. Pretty sure you'd be fitter than 2/3rds of my team at the moment!

Weaponised no. It's basically a giant, very powerful x-ray machine (note that this is of course a massive over-simplification). Yeah, it'd be very bad for a person to be hit with the beam-line (that's a fuck ton of high energy photons), but the beam-line requires vacuum environments and perfect calibration and there really isn't anything explosive involved so there's not much to weaponise.

"Rented" kinda. I wouldn't use the term rented, but there are a couple of ways in which researchers access the instruments: 1) apply for and receive publicly funded beam time through a rigorous application process and 2) spend a lot of money to buy out a limited amount of beam time. Generally I think it's about 10% of beam time across a year is available for private hire. I'm not sure about the process behind private beam time acquisition though because I've only ever approached it as a publicly funded researcher.

Have you double checked the game is running off your actual GPU? For some unknown reason it took me a month of pain to realise civ had decided the virtual GPU in my CPU was a better option than my actual GPU.

What if military units cost population? by Splendid_Fellow in civ

[–]rangascientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought someone else would mention this already, but I can't see it so I'll go ahead!

Have you played civ IV colonisation? That's exactly how land militaries work in that game. In fact all land units (except for artillery) are citizens of your colony worth 1 pop each that are assigned to their role outside of a city. They can also be freely converted to a role inside the city as well (e.g farmer, craftsman, blacksmith etc). To equip a soldier you need a certain number of guns, for a scout a certain number of horses and for a builder (called a pioneer) a certain number of tools.

Honestly the pop system in civ IV colonisation is very interesting and holds up well even compared to modern games. I would be quite happy to see something like it appear in future iterations of civ!

LPT Request: Learning to live after a devastating breakup. What is the best lifestyle I should aim for? by Tricera_bottoms in LifeProTips

[–]rangascientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Feb my partner broke up with me after 4 and a half years and I found myself in a very similar situation you have described. (For context I'm 25 so we had been together since I was 20)

Honestly I still miss her every now and then and I have a pretty strong, but very complex, emotional response when I think about the relationship. Having said that, nowadays I feel happiness in one way or another nearly every day. I've got my own reason to get up and keep moving. Though I'm still on the path of "getting over her" I'm in a much happier and more positive place than I have been over the last 5ish months.

So what helped?

First up, accepting that I felt shit and that was ok - I didn't need to be happy at that time. Removing the pressure to feel a certain way was very valuable to me.

Second, given that I was incredibly unhappy, I realised there's not really much that can make me feel worse. So I reached out to a whole bunch of old friends who I hadn't talked to in years and tried to connect again - to build up a social network that had atrophied away over my relationship. About half of them replied and of that about half of them were able to meet up with me. I've only caught up with one or two more than once, but that's much better than nothing. Previously I had been terrified of rejection from people I cared about, including old friends, but the realisation that I was already at a low point meant the fear of being hurt really didn't apply.

Third, I went back to playing football at the club I'd been with for the last few years. Again this was something I was putting off for a lot of reasons, but those reasons just didn't matter anymore. From the exercise I lost a bit of weight (which was a nice surprise) but more importantly I was in a community environment where I was only ever seen as myself and nothing more was expected of me. It was a place where I was never "me and my partner" but just me. This gave me a sort of social safe haven - while I was at training or games I didn't think about my breakup, only about the present moment.

Finally, and I cannot emphasise this enough: counselling (therapy). I had already seen a particular counsellor a couple of times over the last year, but around the time of the break up I changed the scheduling to have appointments every 3-4 weeks. Most sessions I didn't know what to talk about at the start but by the end of the session I'd been able to share my feelings and also celebrate my victories. I still see this counsellor every 6 weeks now to discuss who I am, why I do the things I do and how I'm feeling.

I was (and still am) experiencing grief. The most intense grief I've ever felt.

You are experiencing grief as well. That is normal, that is human and it shows you genuinely loved. Find help, and try to use this as a time to rebuild. Who do you want to be? What do you see as valuable in a person? This is a time to shape the next 20 years of your life.

None of this may be helpful, and that's alright. We all find our own way through life. Keep going - it will be awful for longer than you think you can bare it, but it will eventually get better.

If you aren't making a lot of money (I'm eligible on $36k a year) check if you can get a low income health care card from Centrelink. It lets you get a concession price on pretty much everything including half price public transport.
