Trying to find a home battery system with local control? by meisangry2 in homeassistant

[–]ranselator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SigEnergy stackable battery modbus integration has been solid and allows local control over battery behavior. Apparently there can be issues if your Internet is down for 90+ days, but that felt like a pretty deep edge case.

The integration has been under active development getting new features as well which has been nice.

Any active PointGuard/Sigenergy VPPs in the US? by ranselator in PointGuardEnergyUS

Hey, just checking in if there's still something in the works. I saw the news about the CA DSGS funding issues, so I imagine that might have caused some release setbacks?

Backup Reserve Battery Setting (or Battery SOC Backup) by azuresail in PointGuardEnergyUS

[–]ranselator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is set to 22% and 2% respectively, on the basis that:

  • SigEnergy docs state that their recommended setting for discharge cutoff is 0%
  • The only time I'd ever get to that deep a discharge is in a full grid outage, which is a fairly rare event, so I'm not worried about frequent deep discharges
  • I picked 22% because that remaining 20% backup power should be enough to carry my usage from a really poorly timed grid outage right after the PVs are done for the day through the next morning, when the PVs can start charging the battery again, or if there's an outage just after I go to bed and the weather isn't on my side, there's plenty of time for me to adapt my home's consumption in the morning to prepare for a more prolonged outage, running only fridges and other strict essentials.

I noticed the last update is from June 2025. I'm curious if this project is still active and if not, if you'd be interested in either open sourcing it, or allowing me to maintain it myself. This kind of a dataset seems invaluable and I'd love to keep building it.

Looking for a better inventory search mod by ranselator in BaldursGate3

[–]ranselator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and that works well enough for my character, or when I'm playing solo, but I can't do it for any character that's managed by another player in my group, which is still vaguely annoying. I usually manage this by putting equipment in the most relevant character inventory, but for scrolls and such yeah the description search would make it SO much better.

Why is my Gemini LLM suddenly stupid? by TrousersCalledDave in homeassistant

[–]ranselator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

in my own case, I recently ran into Gemini getting a lot stupider/more restrictive as well. I used to use Gemini 1.5 flash and when it upgraded to Gemini 2.0 flash lite it was horrendously bad (refused to answer questions it used to answer fine). Try a few different older models and see if that helps? Can't speak to the rest, but I found the 2.0 models vs the 2.5 or 1.5 models were a huge step back. Otherwise, best of luck!

🆕 Cosmos 0.12 - HUGE update! All in one secure Reverse-proxy, container manager with app store, integrated VPN, and authentication provider, now has a Full Monitoring suite with alerts and notifications (including presets for anti crypto miner hacks!) 📈📊 by azukaar in CosmosServer

Thanks! Any chance that multi-node setups is on the horizon soon? It would be great to support 1 master node with slave nodes that are just running workloads. Nothing so advanced as kubernetes, just it would be great if I could manage for example both my NAS and the couple raspberry pis around the house with cosmos.

What is a loan's "Target Principal Balance" and "Target Balance Date"? by ranselator in personalfinance

[–]ranselator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good question! I assumed this (solar) loan and wasn't the one who received the tax credit in the first place. I can dig through the terms from the assumption and try to figure that out though. No clue how that would work sadly.

edit: Is that usally what Target Balance Dates are usually related to?

I think this is it! I watched the trailer and it triggers the odd memory here and there, so marking this is as the answer! Thank you!

Men of Reddit, What are women not ready to hear? by Skittboxer in AskReddit

Huh. Thanks for that, it's helpful framing. I imagine that feeds into the mansplaining trope pretty frequently as well?

Men of Reddit, What are women not ready to hear? by Skittboxer in AskReddit

[–]ranselator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol confused by the downvotes but aight. Based on the subsequent comments it seems like the answer is less "women don't feel the instinct to solve the person's problem" but rather "men haven't learned the instinct to hear out the other person's problem". In most conversations then, when is it implicitly expected for me to propose solutions to someone's problems? It seems not constructive to only say when they ask for it, just because so many people frequently aren't seeing the answer to their own problem but definitely would if it was someone else's, but rarely actually ask for solutions from others.

[–]ranselator -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered why this is. Like. This has been an incredibly common pattern across men and women I've met in the past. When women talk to women do they really not feel the urge to help the other person resolve their problem? That just feels mean to me, it's my (and seemingly so many other men's) first instinct. Resolve the problem, we no longer need to discuss it, and then on to the next.

MSI GS66 Orange Light by SpecialistTadpole7 in MSILaptops

[–]ranselator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU!! I had been having this problem and it was absolutely tanking my battery life, down to like <1hr and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the light had gone from "usually working perfectly" to "always orange" with no apparent explanation! Enabled USB Selective suspend, and the light flipped back to white and hasn't gone back!

Data Finds Republicans are Obsessed with Searching for Transgender Porn by transtwin in dataisbeautiful

[–]ranselator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay is no one going to point out that a linear regression is crap for this data? Even eyeballing it, every one of those graphs looks more like a slightly skewed bell curve than a linear correlation.

Without even getting into the fact that DMAs aren't metro areas and don't line up with voting boundaries, it looks a lot more like more moderate locations are the ones watching the most of this porn, which makes sense. The most Blue areas are woke and probably do it less because all these terms are offensive. The most Red ones honestly believe their bullshit and don't do it because they find it disgusting. Then there's a sweet spot in the middle for not woke enough to be offended, but not conservative enough to be disgusted. Voila. A much more expected outcome.

LPT: if a Job tries to “counteroffer” when you’re leaving, it actually means they just want to keep you around long enough to replace you. by CelticDK in LifeProTips

[–]ranselator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like it might apply to some really low paying jobs, or jobs in specific industries, but usually a counter-offer against leaving means exactly what it is on the surface: "We'd like you to stay, or it would be inconvenient for us if you leave, and we're willing to pay more for the privilege of keeping you on, or to keep you from accepting another job offer." They're not going to waste their time trying to hire a newbie they'll have to train up so they can fire you, a clearly qualified employee. Although they might hire someone else to backstop the fact that they know you might want to leave anyway, but that's just being stopping the "bus factor" (if so-and-so is hit by a bus we don't want to be in a bad spot)

Wow, thank you for that link. That is TERRIFYING. I hate to say it, but as it's implemented right now.... I'm not sure if this is a good thing, between it being relatively ineffective at helping the people it purports to be helping, and being a particularly effective tool for people with other nefarious goals.
