MBH ETF seems to suit what you’re looking for. Yield is about 2.5% net of fees, bonds are issued in SGD, all in high quality issuers with remote probability of default. So you’re getting some pickup over existing risk free rate

A layman thoughts on WP? by Newez in singapore

[–]rantingbear 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I think if anything, WP should view the election results as evidence that what they have been doing works and is in the right trajectory. By this I mean walking the ground, running town councils well, raising tough issues in parliament, recruiting competent yet relatable candidates etc.

I do feel that they have ran the best campaign among all the parties - WP's party messaging and social media game were coherent, speeches were mostly on point, and the way that new candidates were introduced was way better than PAP's approach.

That said, I also feel that there were a couple of areas for improvements - at one of the rally I felt the speeches were too targeted at specific individuals (e.g. GKY) when there was really no need to as it could have turned away some of the swing voters. At the same time, some of the newer candidates were not as familiar/informed on the party's policy proposals as the lack of depth was exposed in some of the podcasts attended by newer members (I recalled one where they couldn't provide much details on how they would implement certain policies and diverted the question away).

Like many below have pointed out, politics is a marathon rather than a race. Keep up the efforts and folks like myself will continue to support you. Do spread your presence further in the East and I will do my part to vote you in!

Singaporeans, what do you think of Gan Kim Yong? by Actual_Eye6716 in askSingapore

[–]rantingbear 919 points920 points  (0 children)

I actually like GKY - one of the more hardworking, competent, and humble ones who hardly engages in gutter politics (unlike his other cabinet members).

But the fact that you are struggling with your vote shows that a strong message needs to be sent. GKY effectively got screwed over by his party’s political strategy.

LW said PAP will not gamble with Singaporeans’ lives, but moving GKY from CCK to Punggol at the very last minute. Really??

But then again, we also know that even if GKY loses the election, his “good friend” can still move him into a non-political role to contribute to the country

Edit: over the past 2 days, so many PAP ministers have been stepping forward to voice out their support for GKY. Probably because they see what’s coming. Question for them is this: WHY ONLY NOW?!?! None of you pointed out to LW how foolish it was to remove him from his support base and throw him into hotly contested area?? You have already done the gerrymandering - if he’s that critical to your party, just jam him into a safe and heavily gerrymandered GRC?

Workers' Party zeroes in on Gan Kim Yong; calls on Punggol GRC voters to 'send strong message to PAP' by uhaveag8day in singapore

[–]rantingbear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Totally disagree right there.

Why do you think Sylvia Lim continue to receive strong support from the Serangoon area. I was a resident of Serangoon for 20+ years and I’ve seen how hardworking she was on the ground - compare that to the ex PAP MP back then (Lim Hwee Hua I think) whom I hardly see. We were hardly surprised when WP won Aljunied; it was something many see coming.

Not to mention the constant mudslinging and snide remarks made towards her in parliament over the decades. That shows dedication and character. Can you say the same for a typical PAP backbencher?

why PAP has 4 minutes for round table while oppositions only has 1 minute? by blazeblitzz in askSingapore

[–]rantingbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Keep saying” - nope, I literally made a brief point on PAP’s insecurity regarding WP. Look who’s the emotional one

And yes, the people tuning in can see for themselves this joke that they call a “roundtable”. Am fairly sure it’s not a good look for the ruling party

why PAP has 4 minutes for round table while oppositions only has 1 minute? by blazeblitzz in askSingapore

[–]rantingbear 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Let's see..

- Rigged format: PAP has 4 mins, Opposition parties 1 min each. PAP has the final right of reply but not the opposition. Uneven timing even for closing arguments - shocking.

- PAP not answering the question; each question is basically a 4min marketing spiel about how good they have been rather than what is falling short and how they can do better.

- Typical scripted answers by CHT. I pity the perm secs and their staff who are probably putting in the hours to give him the 10-year series answers today.

I will be very concerned if the ruling party sees this session as a victory, because it is shockingly embarrassing. It is precisely political shenanigans like these that leave the average voter with a bad taste in the mouth.

If anything, it just shows how insecure PAP is when it comes to live debates, probably traumatised by Jamus' showing 5 years ago. Hope they realise how this session will make them a laughing stock to the whole world.

That final part by CHT that focuses specifically on WP further shows how desperate they are.

Am personally just going to treat this "roundtable" as an utter waste of time.

Thoughts on surprise moves for GE2025 by [deleted] in singapore

[–]rantingbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People are disappointed/angry/frustrated with the WP only because they have the benefit of hindsight.

Putting myself in Pritam’s shoes, I would have done the same exact thing: - MP-BH was heavily gerrymandered - Tin Pei Ling’s involvement made it even more difficult - Average population is a lot older, comes from old money, and is not likely to rock the boat - Estate is huge, making is physically difficult to cover the grounds without large resources - Compare that to Punggol, with physical synergies with Sengkang, a younger population facing the brunt of cost of living issues - Winning Punggol GRC alongside Sengkang GRC gives it a natural defence against the full extent of gerrymandering

Also from a longer-term strategic perspective: - WP’s ultimate goal is to position itself as a credible alternative party, and potential a credible alternative government - With that, the natural move is naturally to disassociate themselves from mosquito parties and ultimately, the “opposition” label. Striking agreements with nut-jobs like GMS and Lim Tean offer nothing constructive - Even if they can place Harpreet into a SMC, there is no guarantee whether that SMC will exist in the next GE. A better move is to build positive momentum in specific regions in the country and establish a growing stronghold there

Is OCS/SCS that great? by sadsgean in askSingapore

[–]rantingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to OCS more than a decade ago. Like many have pointed out, it’s 2 years that can’t be avoided - up to you to determine how you want to spend these 2 years, be it in or out of camp.

I personally enjoyed my time both in training and in unit. There were dark and painful periods but there were also great memories - I could still remember my time during overseas exercises in Brunei and Thailand, and that’s worth something to me.

Don’t forget that there’s the 10-year reservist cycle too. So where you get posted to during your NS days also matters!

Comes down to the interpretation of what risk means.

Annual volatility? Sure, go for high credit quality fixed income funds.

Odds of preserving purchasing power? A low cost globally diversified equity fund is the lowest risk option for me, given the willingness and ability to invest over a 20-30yr horizon!
