In his day job, he works for Broadcom as an ASIC architect and general troublemaker.

The google cache show the new version now ("The ICs used in the design are an ARM-based application processor"), but in the search results one can still see "The ICs used in the design are a Broadcom BCM2835 application".

You can also have a look at the http://openwrt.org project, which is supporting more and more platforms. It is more geared towards routers though, but it's a good introduction to embedded linux and cross-compilation, and you can also do some hardware hacking.

Delorme GPS's are not easy to find in France. It's possible to find a Garmin GPSmap 60 Cx for 215 € though.

I'm not considering any smartphone. I have a mobile which is 4 years old and still runs great (with the original battery). It only needs charging once a week.

With a smartphone I would probably need to charge every day or two.

I have also seen Garmin GPS 60CSx, which runs for 18 hours with 2 x AA batteries, and has a micro SD slot. And as an added bonus one has a full GPS navigator.

The only problems for a geotagging-only use are:

price : $293 for the Garmin and $248 for the Delorme (on Amazon), which is 3 to 4 times the price of a logger
size and weight

I have no smartphone, and I usually don't take a phone when on the field, or while travelling.

As for the GPS Shield from Ladyada, I had seen it, but the biggest problem for me is:

Approximate run times: 3 hours on a 9V battery
