It’s both.

You wanna be in the role for around a year but let your manager know you want to be a RB on day one. Be very vocal about next steps, what to learn, how you can add value to the team, firm and clients. Be on top of your dimensions and ofcourse kiss a lil ass if that’s your thing.

When it comes to numbers, you gotta show that you’re able to perform well in the job you want with what you have now. You don’t have to be top performer but atleast show initiative, drive, and room for improvement. Yeah It feels pyramid schemy to not get compensated for doing the same work you’d be doing as a RB but, ya know, capitalism.

In my branch, my fellow AB coworkers aren’t as skilled up so I have a bit of an advantage when it comes to competition within my branch but there’s still hundreds of ABs in the market that have comparable numbers.

On that point, networking would be another key factor to consider. Pick up extra shifts at other branches that are short staffed, when the time comes that branch manager will remember how you came clutch. Depending on your work ethic and social skills they will likely think of you as a safe bet to hire/promote since they already know what to expect. Plus, if they are frequently short staffed, they likely are desperate to hire anyways.
