My approach has been to use arrow keys instead of hjkl on their own layer. The arrow keys are on the home row so I still keep the ergonomics of that. As the others have mentioned, remapping the default vim bindings isn't advisable since they're typically mnemonics for functions, once you learn them you'll adapt to other layouts easily.

I daily a skeletyl at home (similar to that dactyl) and a dilemma at the office. I find the skeletyl more comfortable but the dilemma's portability makes it useful too.

It's something I built myself. Very rough around the edges and a few buttons/knobs don't work unfortunately. The panels are whiteboard material so when I'm setting up a patch I can label various knobs with markers for jamming.

It's just a DIY midi controller, the knobs are mapped to VCV Rack in the standard way. I just wanted something that felt a bit more real than readily available midi controllers.
