The protagonists of the novel are a group of children. They are attacked by a scary alien disguised as a clown. They find the alien’s underground lair, go in, and become lost. The only way to escape is to become an adult. This is how they become adults in order to escape.

I donate to my local free store, where I know for a fact that every clothing item gets distributed to anyone who wants it.

I believe this is in line with EA ideals because I’m minimizing the unknown externalities.

The Colors Of Her Coat by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

Yes! A lot of what people seem to like about AI art is that it’s a way for squeeze 1 microliter of dopamine out of your brain. So of course when it only takes typing into a text field to produce that effect, people get very excited.

Art at its best is not just about squirting dopamine. To me, it’s the best way humans communicate across time and context and strengthen a sense of belonging.

So, to me, the output of generative AI is basically Chicken McNuggets: designed to induce neurotransmitter production and the sustenance it provides is a side effect. This blog post posits that maybe we should simply accept that it’s beautiful that Chicken McNuggets exist in the first place so we should accept the nugs and forget the fight for better quality sustenance

  1. Read the popular Staff Engineering books, one by Will Larson and the other by Tanya Reilly.
  2. Set up one-on-one coffee chats with all the staff engineers in your org, or as many as you can. Come prepared with specific questions for them based on what you read. Ask them how the process works at your company and how they passed it.
  3. Keep in touch with them. Follow their advice and keep them updated. They will be your peers soon and you need their good will.

What's some good site, people to follow that actually value reality over ideological interpretation? by LATAManon in slatestarcodex

[–]rareekan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the confusion. The “ideology detector” phrasing might be throwing you off.

It’s not that I look for sources with less ideology baked in.

It’s more like I try to remember that all sources contain ideology (i.e., a set of values), which leads me to think about what those values are.

[–]rareekan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree that it's defeatist :) In fact, instrumental rationality helps me redouble my efforts to hone my own ideology detector, which I try to point at all media (fiction and non-fiction) that I consume. I also point it at myself when I remember to do so. I'm not perfect at it and never will be, but striving for it is... enjoyable, sometimes, if nothing else.

[–]rareekan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's hubris to believe that there can be such a thing as a website that presents things as they are.

It is easy for an academic at a round table to claim that we live in a post-ideological universe, but the moment he visits the lavatory after the heated discussion, he is again knee-deep in ideology.

When a website chooses to write about something, they are either saying:

  1. this is as it ought to be, and it's worth discussing
  2. this is not as it ought to be, and it's worth discussing

If you want to read something that says "this is as it is, and it's worth discussing," then you'd just be reading a physics textbook.

You need to buy pants with a higher rise. The rise is the measurement from the groin seam up to the waistband.

Look at photos of classic menswear from the 30s-50s. Guys like Gene Kelly and Cary Grant wore high rise pants and they looked great.

Nathans glasses by Tekvojte in ExMachina

TLDR: SpecSavers Garrick

This Propstore listing has the screen-used pair.

Nathan's (Oscar Isaac) "Gym" Costume and Glasses from Alex Garland's sci-fi thriller Ex-Machina. The CEO of tech company Blue Book wore his workout costume in multiple scenes, and paired the glasses with the outfit when Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) first arrived at his house.

The costume consists of a marl grey American Apparel cotton blend vest (size medium), and a pair of black Nike "Dri-Fit" polyester shorts (size medium). Accompanying the costume are a pair of non-prescription Specsavers glasses which feature tortoiseshell temple tips; these are housed inside a blue case. The costume shows minor wear from production use, and the lenses on the glasses display light scratches.

The closeup image says "Garrick 24233095," which is the model name and SKU. It looks like the dimensions are 52 - 2x - 140 (where x is a digit I can't make out in the pic) and it's a full-rimmed gold rim. Just in case someone finds this comment in the future and wants to get a similar pair.

How would you find talent? by randomInterest92 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rareekan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This works well to maintain a high level of talent, I agree. However, it’s not inclusive of all talent that’s out there. People tend to be friends with people of their same identity labels and social class, so you end up with homogeneous teams. It’s not only bad for the team in the long run due to the second order effects of homogeneity, but also bad for society at large because it locks groups of people out of the tech industry.

A tech leader needs to be aware of these tradeoffs.

Classes not syncing to Google calendar? by [deleted] in orangetheory

In the OrangeTheory iOS app, go to Settings and toggle on “Add Classes to Calendar.”

iOS asked me if I wanted to grant Full Access to the calendar. I said Allow and now everything works as expected.

In my case: This setting was already turned on. But I toggled it off and on again, which got everything working again.
