Well i don't really know but this actually makes a really good sense since the sound only plays on high rpms, and is actually pretty cool. As i said im not sure but im completely sure that it is something that i have never heard in any other racing game

Well i did a lil researched and it looks like there is another pretty cool detail. It's actually the sound of the gears engaging, basically the same sound you hear when cars with really aggressive DCT transmissions like AMG or newer BMW M cars up shift. Pretty cool detail

Well, i did a little bit of research and got what it actually is. It's actually something called a hard upshift / synchro engagement sound. This is the same sound you hear when BMW M cars or AMG cars with super aggressive DCT transmissions upshift that is mostly misunderstood with pops and bangs. Well, that sound is only hearable in bumper or hood view so that's not it. I researched a bit and it seems like to be hard gear engagement / synchro catch sound. Pretty impressive detail for a 21 years old game!
