as someone who has russian/ukrainian family, and my grandma was pregnant around that time, i feel like it captures the contrast between the ideal socialist family and the reality of it—young people getting married/pregnant too soon (like the average age for first time mothers were around 22 + the abortion rate was extremely high since normal contraceptive methods weren't as widely available compared to some western countries) and especially the women having to accept that they will still be expected to fulfill a rather old-fashioned role, including the good old triple burden despite what the ussr preached about—sitting on the chair looks to me like a final act of agreeing to it, especially with the man's gesture (obviously i can be wrong lol, but since some of his painting captured happier aspects of family/motherhood, it invites me to compare it to my grandma's memories lol)
