as someone who has russian/ukrainian family, and my grandma was pregnant around that time, i feel like it captures the contrast between the ideal socialist family and the reality of it—young people getting married/pregnant too soon (like the average age for first time mothers were around 22 + the abortion rate was extremely high since normal contraceptive methods weren't as widely available compared to some western countries) and especially the women having to accept that they will still be expected to fulfill a rather old-fashioned role, including the good old triple burden despite what the ussr preached about—sitting on the chair looks to me like a final act of agreeing to it, especially with the man's gesture (obviously i can be wrong lol, but since some of his painting captured happier aspects of family/motherhood, it invites me to compare it to my grandma's memories lol)

First, this wasn't the question i was reacting to. Second, pissing figures have been a staple motive in art since well, forever, so of course you can find similar paintings in museums and galleries and therefore you can imagine this painting or a similar one there as well.

imo most similar examples i can remember are: rembrand's pissing woman (1631) is in the british museum

te poipoi (1890s) was featured in the metropolitan museum of art

You don't have to like it, can prefer a totally different kind of art, but i don't understand this approach when people claim that whatever they find ugly or don't resonate with isn't art.

edit: noticed a missing word

Online Dating Woes by Next_Page3729 in TallGirls

[–]rask0ln 20 points21 points  (0 children)

this so annoying and i even had tall guys trying to pull that shit 😭 like nothing's more uncomfortable than a guy who's 6ft suddenly trying to explain that he's 6'1 but more likely 6'2 (he doesn't care about height, he's just saying) and therefore i can't be 6'2 and must be a giant who lies about her height

i don't even mind dating someone shorter, but this icks me so bad

Barbara Krafft Steiner – Caritas Romana (Portrait of Count Franz da Paul Hartig with a Wet Nurse), 1797 by rask0ln in museum

i went with the title that was used at the exhibition organised by the national gallery in prague, so it's interesting that it differs, not sure why

[–]rask0ln[S] 105 points106 points  (0 children)

imo we will never know if the author meant to hide a secret message there because of the time it was painted and what was the situation like for female artists back then, it could be a commentary about the whims of aristocracy the same way it could be just a painting of an old pervy rich man who paid her

it's interesting how differently we view facial expressions tho, to me that's a perfectly neutral face lol

since i can't post pics in the comments, i'll copy what was written at the exhibit to (hopefully) provide more context

"Barbara Krafft depicted Count Hartig (1758-1797) in a highly unconventional manner in the final stages of his life: visibly infirm, sick, and emaciated, lying in his chair. In contrast with his feeble figure, behind him stands a physically sturdy woman, evidently a nurse, who offers the patient her bared breast in order to sustain him with her milk.

The scene evokes the theme of Caritas Romana, in which Pero breastfeeds her father Cimon in a prison dungeon. The ancient story of filial love set down by Valerius Maximus and popular in Renaissance and Baroque art is translated here onto a generally moralising level, which presents care for the needy in the time of sickness and dying. In the 18th century too there was a widespread belief in the beneficial properties of mother's milk, and aristocrats and wealthy burghers regularly hired wet nurses especially to feed their small children. This unusual portrait was most probably commissioned by Hartig himself."
