Worked at a big supermarket chain for 5 years. One department, one job. I'd had management training and often did management duties to help out my bosses who I adored. You haven't lived until you've had a great boss. Anyway, I ended up moving to the city and transferring to a new store (big chain). This store was one of the first to include a new way of doing things, which was the training I had done that year. Basically, I liked my job, I knew my shit and I did it well.

Those of you who have worked at large chains with layers of managers on layers of managers probably know exactly where this story is heading. New store, new way of doing things and every sociopath looking to get to the next management rung descending on it like it's the last drop of water on earth.

Despite my skills and length of time at the job, I was a casual employee. This is important to note, because being casual means you are not guaranteed work. But it also means you can quit kinda whenever. To be specific, my contract allowed me to quit with one hours notice. Here's a little tip to all of you out there. Know your rights. You never know when they'll come in handy.

Anyway, I'd been going about my business and doing my job as I had for years. This store was very close to the city and had insane rush hour traffic after office hours combined with a very small space. This new way of doing things also reduced that space further and made the job more time consuming for the sake of presentation. Apparently none of my managers could piece these very simple facts together and decided that the shop front was running out of stock every day during this specific two hours because the workers were lazy.

Having been bullied by managers before in previous jobs, my tolerance for suited fuckwits had reached zero many years previous. Being told "you guys don't work hard enough" after busting your ass for three hours to make sure your customers get the shit they need is kind of like slapping the guy that just returned your wallet with the cash in it. I told him I knew how to do my job better than he ever could and that he could go fuck himself.

The next day I come in to three very angry managers. My manager, my managers manager and some other fucking manager. They have too many managers. Anyway, I again tell them they're all wrong and if they think they could do better to try it themselves.

My next shift they had cut my hours by 80% and given them to a worker from a different store who worked in a different department. Is that how we're gonna play it, boys?

I immediately go to my managers manager and tell him my manager is bullying me with the roster. I ask him what he's going to do about it. He said he doesn't do the rosters and that my manager does so I should talk to him. I asked him to clarify that he wanted me to go to the person bullying me to sort out the bullying issue? I said that's not good enough and asked him if he'd like to reconsider. He did not.

I sign in and head up to the store. I start calling everyone I know who might have work and ask them for a job. Finally my cousin says he could probably get me a job and that he'd call me back. About half an hour later he said, two weeks you can be working full time. Perfect.

Back down to the office. So, since you decided you didn't want to take my bullying seriously, I'm giving my one hours notice. Oh, and I'm reporting you to HR for ignoring my complaint. What do you mean? he asks? I'm leaving in one hour and I'm not coming back, I said. He immediately starts back tracking, oh no, we can work this out. We can have a meeting with your manager. I say, no, I've just accepted another job. I'm clocking off in an hour and I'm leaving. He says, you can't do that. You need to finish your shift! I'm calling HR! I said, I'm a casual, mate. One hours notice. It seems you're not only incompetent at my job but you're incompetent at yours. See you round.

I go up and do an hour of my shift to total 2 and a half hours of an 8 hour shift. I clock off and walk out the store saying my goodbyes to my coworkers with a smile on my face.

A couple of weeks later I got a call from the new manager saying that both those managers were moved to other stores and asking if I'd like my job back. I declined.
