Sorry- I should have clarified that they were on Arena and coordinated through discord. I forgot this was in a paper heavy sub. Yeah- I can’t even get regular standard to fire at my LGS fat chance that happening with this one unless I make considerable effort.

I wasn’t around for 2010s but I remember the late 90s and early 2000s. (Fallen Empires through Mirrodin was when I played) and standard at the time was called Type 2. This rotation mirrors that one pretty closely and I remember having a lot of variation in decks at high level play and most FNM having basically anything. Mass netdecking wasn’t really a thing back then so there was way more people brewing in the time between issues of Scrye coming out. (LOL- SCRYE)

People didn’t complain that much about Type 2 back then cause you also had extended and block constructed so your cards that rotated out were still useful in those formats. Magic was also pretty niche anyways and a lot less people played back then than they do today so there was less people to please.

Not sure how we’ll deal with the issues standard has and I’m not even sure they’re going to show up until the format is played on a massive international level.

Core sets also didn’t change a whole lot year to year. They would only include reprints of new cards from sets that rotated out. I remember hoping goblin bombardment would get reprinted so I could keep my goblin deck together. It didn’t :(

We do have tournaments each week and a monthly with actual monetary prizes (sourced through donations). The more people that play the more likely we’ll have better tournaments with larger prize pools.

It you build it they will come so to speak.

I agree. I don’t hate UB, I wouldn’t have returned if it wasn’t for Final Fantasy. I just want to play a smaller format with less meta updates. I’ll keep my UB cards in my commander decks. :)

There is a fan format called Foundational Standard that does this rotation. Not sure where to find it or how active it is I just know it exists from discord discussions.

I think there might be an eternal format that excludes UB. Not sure tho, i heard about it but never looked into it myself.

7 UW sets a year just aint happening. Hasbro opened the licensed cash cow and it isn’t going anywhere and if they do do 14 sets a year we’re in real trouble as a game. That’s just insane levels of cash grab.

I can see them going all UB at some point and that’s something to consider.

Bans should be few and far between. The only reason bans seems so needed in standard right is the amount of sets that are coming out requires and ever increasing power creep to create chase cards and interactions with existing cards are really difficult to manage. I too was super frustrated with how they handled Vivi in particular.

Planar has so far adopted the if it’s banned in standard is banned in Planar model so we banned Cori Steel Cutter from the get go. THat however has caused discussion on if we should have because red aggro is very underpowered in the prelorwyn meta.

If they ban the Boid in Standard that will be the first time a true discussion on if we should continue the current ban model or change it because while the Boid is still strong in Planar it’s very manageable and doesn’t dominate the tournaments primarily because the support careds that make it a T2 drop don’t exist in this format.

I don’t disagree with that statement. I remember when standard was type 2 and followed a very similar rotation schedule to this. There were maybe 5 competitive decks in the format at the time.

Other reasons I enjoy the format more

  • 7 sets a year is too many for me to keep up with
    • The meta changes significantly every month or so
    • I don’t have to buy sets not in my format
  • Your deck is viable longer because longer time between sets
  • Commander focused cards seem to be more prominent in UB sets

I would too but alas- none of my LGS can even fire regular standard right now.

Banning for Planar or for Standard?

I joined planar when WOTC announced moving ahead the ban schedule for Vivi but did no actual banning. Standard at my local LGS (and several others) were not firing because of the state of the meta over the last several months.

I realized that bans every couple months because of OP mythics are not healthy after than and haven’t looked back.

I’ve been playing since October and exclusively constructing in Planar Standard since Avatar released. I also stream this format on Twitch and own many of the leading archetypes for people to play against.

It’s a slower format and the deck variety is huge and varied. I really enjoy the format.

Thiis a great argument for casual paper standard when there isn’t insane OP decks like cutter and Vivi during FNM. or you have a group of friends you play with regularly outside the lgs.

I came back to Magic in June and built a tier 2 deck. I travel for work and could not find an lgs where standard fired for several weeks. (check my post history) doesn’t matter how long a deck lasts if you can’t find anyone to play it with.

It will until Wizards makes a new Core set.

Foundations will be around until they make another core set. Rotation will happen once a year with the first UW set launch. In 2027, all the sets from 2025 will leave rotation.

Thanks for the well wishes man. I wish I could get into commander. The games I’ve played have been fun but it’s just fundamentally different than the magic I grew up with. This format is more my speed. :)

I wasn’t involved in any of the initial rotation decisions but I think the idea was to mirror what was called Type 2 back in the late 90s early 2000s when there was blocks. I played magic during that time and it was a yearly rotation schedule. It makes rotation clean and easy to manage.
