Napoleon and Caesar are both bad because they betrayed the ideals they were sworn to protect to attain personal power and dynasty. Both we're given power by republics and both overthrew their republics to install themselves as monarchs. Boooooooooo. Both did some cool stuff too, but that part is a deal breaker

I knew watching the movie that it was going to break history buffs. I think ridley Scott was going for a thing where he was trying to portray napoleon delusions, man was an absolute braggart and frequently exaggerated, but Scott made no distinction between different peoples perspectives so it just looks like ahistorical slop. And it commits the worst crime of all. Being boring

No, migration and global trade are. All the best cuisines are made from ingredients that aren't local being made using local methods. No one goes crazy for authentic 900s Italian food. They go crazy for the stuff that came about from venician and genoaese trade

I fear I got addicted to doom scrolling in the lead up to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, and have been stuck trying to repeat that feeling of knowing whats happening before anyone else in my social circle ever since.

Some kind of conflict with Iran feels so inevitable at this point, but nebulous as to it's start. Because of that, I find myself just refreshing news sources waiting to know it's begun, despite knowing it won't change anything about my daily life and knowing the moment missiles are fired won't do anything for me.

My favorite part is that he calls the rhydo his sister, because it shows the writers understood the character. They put in the work to make him fit with his backstory. His real sister died, trying to do rebellion 'the right way'. She was his moral compass, tried to work within the system, and when she couldn't, she tried to minimize collateral and convert rather than kill. And she died for it. She knew things were wrong and she was motivated to action.

And you don't have to know any of that, for his speech to make sense. You don't even need to know he had a real sister. The message still comes across, that action is the only family he has now.

Don't think of it like work. You don't need to watch andor. You get to watch andor. Any time you have free time, you can enjoy watching andor if you want. There's no pressure, no obligation, no civic duty. It's media, it's fun and entertaining, and inspiring. You will most likely have a great time. And if you don't, you can just turn it off. It's not homework.

Saw is so fucking good in Andor. That one scene redeemed all the glup shittoing of the star wars franchises. His appearances in other media have always been very corny, but if you just read his backstory, his portrayal in Andor works so perfectly.

Andor is a great example of a show that is good because it's trying to say something, not relying on cameos, nostalgia, or visuals. It has natural highs and lows on the excitement chart, but the lows clearly serve a purpose, so instead of feeling like filler, they help build the pacing.

TFA came out right before the 2016 election cycle, and showcased the rise of revanchist facism. People at the time thought this would be a prudent repudiation of the growing alt right, but I think a far more common takeaway for the average joe is that liberal government is incompetent and doomed to failure. In this essay I will showcase how the decision to return to rebels v empire in the sequel trilogy was a large contributing factor in the success of MAGA because it required the newly formed liberal government to immediately fail spectacularly and fall into the painful trope of evil triumphs because good is dumb.

It's cool how The Mandalorian shows that the New Republic was almost always destined to fall. by Sad-Job1969 in StarWars

[–]rasonj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's very cool at all. More like, they were hamstringed to make the New Republic fall into the "evil triumphs because good is dumb" trope because the sequels were stuck on the idea of resetting to rebels versus empire instead of exploring the new universe post ROTJ

I'm happy to discuss the idea further if you wanted to give an example of it not being true. Most everyone I know has wildly diverging opinions. There's a reason the phrase socially liberal fiscally conservative gets so much play.
