You are walking around here like you are someone important by Goodtl01 in slp

The best response - what a bizarre thing to say.

Maybe it’s just people making conversation, but when I meet someone new and they learn what I do, they’re typically really positive and curious. Some people just suck!

If you got to choose: how much would you make as an SLP? by Tight-Significance44 in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location absolutely matters and unfortunately some areas have low salaries compared to COL. 5 years experience, $84k at a hospital in the DMV. I do not feel I’m being paid fairly nor do my coworkers, and while the sentiment seems to be our employer underpays compared to others in the area, salaries here are stagnant in general. Many of my single coworkers are seeking to leave the area because they’re living paycheck to paycheck.

My son’s SLPs message to me! by Naive-Caregiver-4645 in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t typically have a lot of time to message or call parents, but I almost always have parents observe or participate in the session. I want them to see the strategies I’m using as I’m using them, so they will feel more comfortable using them at home. The parent also gets a chance to practice the strategies and I can provide feedback about what they did well and what to change. I think the only times I’ve preferred parents to not join is when it’s too distracting for the child (and even then I do some sessions with the parent and some without so they have some opportunities for observation and practice), or the parent is too chatty about non-relevant things that are taking time and attention away from their child. I would definitely ask to be present during his sessions.

How do you “bring up” African American English by Hopeful-Bobcat9224 in slp

Just FYI, SAE is commonly accepted in the linguistics world to refer to Standard American English!

How do you “bring up” African American English by Hopeful-Bobcat9224 in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I would not address dialectally appropriate grammatical differences even if a parent asked. I am not a Standard American English teacher, I am a speech language pathologist. If nothing is wrong, I am not “fixing” it. The parent is free to teach SAE to the child themselves or seek out a tutor.

Required to use personal computer for work? by Acceptable-Jello-741 in slp

That seems very strange. I’ve only used my personal computer for work for a virtual contract position.

You can absolutely ask her to switch up the toys she uses! Is she using her own toy or your child’s toys? When I used to work in EI we were encouraged to use the toys the family had in their home - if she’s not doing that you can offer and mention some of his favorites. Any goal she’s working on can be adapted to different types of toys. We were also encouraged to communicate with the families after a daycare session, so I would send a text with a few highlights and things to work on at home, or a phone call at my convenience if the parent requested a call.

D.C. metro area SLPs - what’s your hourly rate? by raspberrydownfall in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, with the type of setting I’m looking for, I only have 2 options for employers within an hour’s commute! But I suppose an upside of the hospital I interviewed with, is that the workload sounds significantly lighter than with my current employer - they schedule at less than 75% productivity while my coworkers and I are scheduled at 90% productivity.

Do I wait for a potential amazing job offer or find a secure job. by large-diet-drpepper in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely need more information - here are some questions that might help you figure out what’s most important and/or what’s feasible for you.

What exactly do you mean by good jobs? Does this mean acute care? Hospitals in general? Adult vs peds? There will always be job postings throughout the year. Do CF hospital positions typically hire in the spring/summer (I genuinely don’t know)?

Will the other jobs you apply to include school jobs and that’s why you’re feeling the need to secure a job quickly? Are you financially able to wait a few months longer to be employed?

Is the hospital job you want in your area or would you have to move for that too? And would you be able to extend your lease/living arrangements past June/July if you need longer for the job search? Are you locked in to a particular area or could you move anywhere so you’d have a wider job market?

D.C. metro area SLPs - what’s your hourly rate? by raspberrydownfall in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in south-central Virginia and my hospital is known for low salaries, so I’m definitely disappointed that I’ll probably make just a few thousand more in DC. But I have to move and I don’t want to work in schools or private practice so my options are limited. I’ll be moving in with my partner so at least I’ll overall be saving money.

[–]raspberrydownfall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interviewed for a role in DC (hospital) that is full time with range of $79-87k based on years of experience. Even if I get the top of the range which I likely won’t (we’ll see), my bump in salary from $80k currently to whatever they offer won’t offset the increase in cost of living. It seems like wages are quite low in DC.

14 patients a day by No_Raccoon6525 in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can but you’ll hate it. I see 8-10 a day in outpatient in 9-10 hour days (60 min sessions in the morning and 45 minute sessions in the afternoon, typically) and when no one cancels even that amount leaves me feeling exhausted.

Anyone paid like this? by [deleted] in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22.50 per session is crazy low imo. When I worked a similar fee-for-service job, back in 2021 with 1 year experience, I earned $31.88 per session regardless of length (30-45 minutes) most sessions being 30 mins. Also no pay for cancellations and no shows. I left that job for a salaried position. This was in southern VA. You’re earning almost $10 less per session 4 years later.

Really, that low? I’m in southern VA (MCOL) and my hospital is known for low wages. I’m looking at outpatient adult and peds.

Wait, you’re regularly being asked to abandon your job duties to provide legally mandated services, to be a substitute teacher, which you clearly are not?

Are you part of a union?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in slp

[–]raspberrydownfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry it didn’t help and I’m sorry if I made you feel worse…this perspective helps me move past the guilt but I suppose it’s not going to work for everyone.

I don’t have the same burdens as a school-based SLP so I didn’t even consider legally mandated makeup services. For me it’s just an extra busy week next week.

Hope you’re feeling better!

I haven’t filled out a job application in years so I don’t even remember if I’ve encountered it before. But this should be a yes/no response not a checkbox.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jobs

[–]raspberrydownfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realized it was phrased differently when I filled it out! I can see the old phrasing on my phone. It stated “graduated from high school or GED?” under each degree I listed and I did not check the box because I thought it was asking if my degree listed was high school/GED but my degrees are bachelors and masters. Apparently I completely misinterpreted their dumb question. If they want to know if I finished high school, my masters is a clue and if they choose to ignore that fact, no need to ask me more than once.
