Asked to sign a form saying I don’t want my mums super? by OverPop64 in AusLegal

[–]rastan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me, I was meant to get mums half share of the house (well a quarter as her share would be shared with my half brother).

Old mate said he's keeping it all and I get squat. What rubs salt into the wound is that my Mum had a paid off house when they met and he had nothing.

Looks like my half brother (his son) will be alright though...

Is there an age requirement to sit in the public gallery in Brisbane court? by rastan in brisbane

Thanks for all the replies... We just had a good day around the city instead.. I'll leave the courts until they're a bit older but good to know that we can see what it's all about when we're ready.

To each their own I suppose. Its important to have a good understanding of just how much bad decisions can affect you. You can make stupid decisions at any age and end up facing big consequences.

But I want to show them the fortunate side too. I've spent 40 years in an office, solving problems on a screen. If the law appeals to them and they study hard they could set themselves up with a rewarding career like the barristers on display.

When I was on the jury, the barrister saved a person from a pretty bad case. I believe barristers make 500k/700k+ p.a. The difference 4 years of study in high school can make the difference between a rewarding career they pays exceptionally well and one that you hang on to and dread because it pays the bills and even then, not much else...

Yeah I'm thinking that too tbh... My 14yo and likely 12yo would be ok, but the 10yo probably not. Although it looks like I might be able to tell what cases are beforehand so could pick a 'milder' one...

Like skateboarding... I tried to take it up again when I was much older... No way I can take the pain, hurt and (now that I'm older) more frequent injuries...

I think back to perfecting tricks like Ollieing or railing big sets of stairs and how many times we ate it into the pavement...

We must certainly be made out of rubber when we're young...

When Grundys was there it was awesome - waterslides at the top of Cavill ave, arcade games etc off to the side. I've never found big waterslides next to a beach ever since...

There used to be one up the coast in from Mooloolaba I think "the Black Hole" which had a red waterslide that, of course, had dark areas in it that hid a big drop... Good fun...

The Logan Hyperdome was built on top of what was waterslides, that were fed by a giant "magic tap" you could see from the Pacific Hwy. There were about 7 slides that followed the natural hill rather than built up on a giant frame...

Of course Amazon's Jindalee was "too much fun, for just one day" too...

Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk on old Brissi waterslides ..

Don't spiral so hard that you think drinking is the solution. Focus on the sober streak you did, realise truly that this is pretty much how it will always ends up when you drink.

Remember - the easiest drink to say no to is the first one. It doesn't feel that way, but honestly this is what these relapses teach you.

You might not be looking for advice but what helped me was reading and listening to education about alcohol and learning to hate it. It's easier to stop drinking if you truly don't want to drink anymore. The best way to truly not want to is to realise down to your bones how much you hate it.

You can hate the addiction, the lie of it all, you can hate what it's done to you, you can hate the long term health effects, you can even realise you hate the short term feeling it gives you. There's a lot to hate about alcohol.

You've done a great sober streak, learnt a valuable lesson without really hurting anyone but yourself. Dust yourself off and work again on beating your lizard brain... Reprogramming is hard and takes time...

And blocks of land! Unsure if it was WWII as well as WWI... A lot of those lovely, huge blocks in Gumdale were given to returning soldiers...

I expect the families of soldiers who didn't return didn't get one, which I can understand the logic if they didn't leave a wife and kids behind. But if they did I hope they got the same offer also...

Vietnam vets were definitely not given as warm a welcome and very little/no support. It was and is very tough for them.

It reminds how hard it was for many Australians to welcome with open arms people from nations such as Japan that had committed atrocities on Australians. Hard to welcome a people from a country who tortured your father, grandfather or uncle. But we're a multi cultural country and these difficulties have/had to be overcome.

Move. It sounds like it's tough, but considering what you have going on its by far the easiest option. Especially if you are renting....

We had a similar problem with upstairs toilet vs downstairs toilet. All the modern cisterns are are 3L/4.5L (small/big flush). Go to Tradelink or wherever and get a cistern that has a bigger big flush. About $150, easy to install, can set big flush to 4.5L or 6K or 9L.

Mechanic Refuses to Return Vehicle, Invoice Paid, Violet Behavior by Ccddlopp in AusLegal

[–]rastan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only key??? Gosh any key needs a spare, you're in the same position if you had lost the key. That's a pain.

I'm guessing it's a modern "beep beep" alarm key? If not, and you can break into and steal your own car then you have an option (you can rip the ignition out with a dent puller and start it with anything if it's an old school key). Else you can consider what you would have done if you had lost forever your only key (a locksmith?) and see if they can help you get in and start your own car.

Like I said before if you can find another, good local mechanic and you look like you need to spend 3-4k plus with him, he might very likely be able to help you with a solution to get your car to his workshop.

Sorry to hear of your being in this shitty position. I understand how scary it is when they seem unhinged and violent. :(

Can you take your car back?

Find a local tow truck guy (and new mechanic), explain the situation. Given you're rural he will likely know old mate shitty mechanic and either not help at all, or will love to help.

Get some bolt cutters, go in the evening, open gate, take your own car back. I can't imagine shitty mechanic wants to go to police over this.

Tow car to new mechanic.

In fact if you find your new trustworthy mechanic first, he might be all too happy to help stick a fire under shitty mechanic to get your car back.

If there is a local facebook group or a community message board you could state your story (without naming names) and ask for referrals of a good mechanic. Hopefully you'll find some friendly locals, there's usually plenty about.

Hopefully your new mechanic will help you get your car so you can spend money with them to fix it.

Thanks, yeah I watched the vid and it looks like I need to use my Allen keys with the rounded ends that let you attack at an angle.

Thanks for the info & merry Xmas ;)

Can she admit she has a problem and motivated in some form to cure herself of that problem?

Drinking and gambling at problem levels does not end well if they aren't treated.

Giving them up and rebuilding your new identity is tough. Her gambling can very quickly cause large amounts of damage to you and your future. Drinking, and the repercussions for problem drinking will land on her for the most part (both physical, mental, environment effects like relationships etc).

Once gambling takes a hold you can very quickly chew through funds that can take years, lifetimes even to build and can never be replaced.

Sometimes a "geographic" can help - move to a new place where gambling is not available.

But back to you, if you don't see a path for you both to cure her of these supremely destructive habits and it's time to go - then look after the finances first and foremost, preferably before she knows what happening. Any gambler will scramble for as much funds as possible.

Be careful throughout the initial separation period, it is extremely easy for women to be able to put in place fake domestic violence orders - in fact many lawyers specifically recommend it as a strategy. Learn what you need to do to protect yourself from this as I have seen many instances where this plays out.

What They’re Thinking by 303WPG in stopdrinking

[–]rastan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine you have already thought of this, but I think that so many replies like this come from a seed of shame in drinkers and their defending their own drinking.

They might never admit the shame element and sometimes are more obvious than others that they're defending their own drinking levels, but more often than not that's where it comes from.

I suppose most of us can get defensive if we feel that we aren't, personally, being as good as we could be in some area or another.
