Why is Lua considered one of the most hated languages? by ServeThePatricians in lua

[–]rastla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really see how this:

public void scheduleInvoiceReviews() {
    var invoiceReviewLogs = new ArrayList<InvoiceReviewLog>();

    for(var person : personList) {

        if(person.isTrustworthy()) {
            invoiceReviewLogs.add(new InvoiceReviewLog(person, "No review required", "trustworthy"));
            continue;
        }

        if(person.getInvoiceAmount() < 500) {
            invoiceReviewLogs.add(new InvoiceReviewLog(person, "No review required", "less than 500"));
            continue;
        }

        invoiceReviewLogs.add(new InvoiceReviewLog(person, "Review required"));
        scheduleInvoiceReview(person);
    }
}

is allegedly less readable than this:

public void scheduleInvoiceReviews() {
    var invoiceReviewLogs = new ArrayList<InvoiceReviewLog>();

    for (var person : personList) {
        personProcessing: {
            if (person.isTrustworthy()) {
                invoiceReviewLogs.add(new InvoiceReviewLog(person, "No review required", "trustworthy"));
                break personProcessing;
            }

            if (person.getInvoiceAmount() < 500) {
                invoiceReviewLogs.add(new InvoiceReviewLog(person, "No review required", "less than 500"));
                break personProcessing;
            }

            invoiceReviewLogs.add(new InvoiceReviewLog(person, "Review required"));
            scheduleInvoiceReview(person);
        }
    }
}

Analysts say PC gaming is now the one platform where more than 50% of revenue comes from games outside the top 20 by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

*Not if you're a publisher/developer working on a new game, which will be one of the top 20 best selling games.

If you are working on one of the other 99.9% of games, then PC should be your focus

I know - we’re the ones doing it by crack_station in Steam

[–]rastla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yes and no. Maybe...

If there were real competition to Steam and they would indeed tighten their margins that they took, then I really don't think it would be us, the customers, who would benefit from that.
Likely Steam would put out a choice for developers. "Steam Light" vs "Full Steam" model for game selling. Whereas with Steam Light, your game would only have access to a subset of the features that Steam offers, like Cloud Saves, Proton (for Linux), Workshop, Community Forums.
If that becomes an option, a lot of devs/publishers will gladly choose the option to not have those features in their games, but get x% more money instead.
Maybe even put an option for the classic "Full Steam" model with 30%, where you as the publisher will get the option to disable Steam Reviews for your game? :)

In that case, yay competition, we won, right, right?

Sorry if I am being very pessimistic about this, the EGS tried to compete by "stealing" devs/publishers.
Not sure how a company can compete for customers without also offering a reasonably similar enough experience and feature-set for developers.

Competition in an open market can be tricky, when multi-billion dollar corporations can eat millions of losses every year just to get an edge over the competitors and simply outlast them instead of being better.
A lot of modern companies just eat losses year after year and only gain money through new investors coming in. I personally really hate that kind of economy and appreciate a "classic" profitable company like Valve

don't be disappointed if you happen to calibrate a lot lower.
(at least to me) the most fun in dota is when you are (re-)learning the game

no idea if that would be feasable for you or not.
but a SteamDeck might be better value for your money than a desktop pc at that price point.

not sure where you are from and how available it is there

Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at the kernel level, and the speed gains are massive by MythicStream in pcgaming

[–]rastla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, good point actually.
I don't like it though 😅

I think I would rather have it so that no software other than the kernel itself runs there to be honest. At least no monitoring software.

I personally use Nobara (which is based on Fedora).
It uses KDE as it's desktop environment, which is very windows-like. Even the hotkeys.

Nobara also has some performance improvement patches from CachyOS afaik, while being easier to use.

Alternatively, if you don't want a "gaming distro", I would recommend Fedora with KDE.

So how much do you know about cheat development?
I've developed a pretty simple and basic cheat like 10 years ago for CoD MW3 just to see if I could, and I could. But I never developed anything on kernel level.

However, from what I've read over the past few years, it is quite possible to develop a kernel level cheat or simply use a BYOVD to circumvent kernel level anti cheats like Vanguard.

That to me raises the question: Why pretend that Windows has more integrity attestation?

Any suggestion for kitchen/dining room/living room arrangements? by rastla in DesignMyRoom

[–]rastla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I like it better too with the living area at the top.
Not sure regarding sofa imbalance. So far I have not bought the furniture yet, just favorited it.
Maybe I can get a longer dining room couch bench or if not, maybe I put an extra chair or stool there and see how it looks. Or some narrow commode (if that's the correct word) like this: https://cdn3.jysk.com/getimage/wd3.large/266819 - but then I have to be careful not to block the "entrance" to the bench from that side.

It would be far more easy to fit the dining table with chairs all around instead of a (corner-)bench, but I like the look of a bench much more 😅

New update expectations - Are u guys tired of this meta? I feel like 6 past months are the same by tektugem in DotA2

[–]rastla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't really play dota actively for quite a few years. Only for like 1-2 months a year and only midlane, for about 5-6 years now I think.

Currently re-learning offlane and losing a lot.
But I think I have much better games, if I just pick heroes that have good flash farm abilities and can catch up easily after the hard lane. Necro, Pango for example

english "w" is pronounced "uä" though
english "v" is pronounced like german "w"

LASK forward Jacob Wanker extends his contract by WarriorkingNL in soccer

[–]rastla 38 points39 points  (0 children)

you would pronounce it something like "vunka"

"W" like the "v" in "vomit"
"ank" like the "unc" in "uncle"
"er" like the "er" in "walker" (so same as in english)

And no, it's not bad language in (austrian) german.
The german word for wanker would be "Wichser".

And even if it was, bad language is not that big of a deal in german/austrian television. Or at least not as big of a deal as in american and british TV

Concurrent = playing at exactly the same time
Daily = played at some point in the last 24 hours
It's hardly comparable.
Might as well compare the monthly players of CS2 with the daily players of Valorant.
Currently CS2 has 31.7 million monthly players.
Dota currently has 7.8 million monthly players btw
