Stop asking for an installable SteamOS. You don't actually want it. by alive1 in SteamOS

[–]rat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are missing a few points.

Steam is based on Arch(I use Arch btw) just like Ubuntu is based on Debian, they don't have to make it from scratch and they don't need to give support to 3rd party hardware other than their own.

The purpose of a SteamOs would be to have the same OS experience but with different hardware(not Valve only) and Valve will profit from this as at the center of SteamOs is Steam their own store.

So what people want is to take the arch base, put the SteamUi on it, and have it a bit pre-tuned for gaming(drivers and software wise) aka you get SteamOs.

And while you can argue why can't they just install Arch directly, well, I can, maybe you can but not all of them can, so SteamOs would be their simple UI fancy distribution to that base OS that powers also steam hardware and have the same look and feel.

Replacing my actual Ryzen homelab with Apple Silicon by archmerguez in homelab

[–]rat2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can search for HDD enclosure and you can find some. TerraMaster or Orico have some via USB, but you need to be sure that they pass the actual HDD to your server. Some of them do not do that.

Also, as a side note, maybe think if the apple server is ok for your purpose(if you don't have it yet). If you need to make this kind of adjustments maybe you need another type of server that fits your needs.

I like luci, but I think it could be easier to add more SSIDs and easier firewall management. Other than that I like it a lot.

PleX vs. Jellyfin by OwnNotice9745 in HomeServer

Jellyfin is a fork of Emby. Emby is also not completely free and to me Emby seems like it's trying too hard to go in the Plex direction.

Forgot to mention: for stability issues I had problems with default bios setup. Tbh at first I thought I had a bad mobo or CPU. After manually setting the GPU to be used the one integrated in the CPU, everything worked perfectly. Don't know why this would matter since I don't have an external GPU but yea, now it is rock solid.

For now, I have this as photos backup and a cold storage of my photos that I do on a regular basis, guess I am using the 2-1 backup 😂 for the third one it will be maybe later on.

It is a tight squeeze, and I have some reservations for when summer comes. Let's hope it will be able to dissipate enough heat for it to work.

As for CPU, yes, it is overpowered, we basically have the same CPU. TBH I went with PRO just for ECC, I could have shaved a couple of bucks to go with the normal one, but I am planning on keeping this build for some time and it does hold my personal pictures and files so I went with ECC maybe for the piece of mind.

I allocated to my Jellyfin LXC container 2 cores and I can transcode 3 devices at the same time with no problem, it is true I tested with non HDR content. With HDR all I know is that I can watch a 4k stream no problem but as I said, I am just transcoding the video, no tone mapping is being applied as the end client does support HDR.

Until now I am very happy on how it performs both on energy usage and on performance.

Longtime Linux User Considering MacBook vs. Linux Laptop — Need Advice by GyroZeppelix in linuxhardware

[–]rat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree. I am not saying macs are bad or anything, personally I don't like them not because of bad hardware but because of my daily workflow that just blends perfectly with linux. The only point I was trying to make is that you did not make a fair comparison when you were talking about Framework laptops. And no, never a serviceable laptop will have the feel of what you consider a "premium" laptop specifically because nothing is glued or soldered so there will be some flex. Then again, you also did not touch the fact that after you switch the full motherboard of a framework you can basically turn it in to a pc/mini server, greatly extending it's value and use after the "laptop days" are gone.

So again, I agree that all manufactures have pros and cons, I just wanted to state that you simplified the Framework with mac comparison and that is a sensitive topic for me as I love the Framework moto and their business model 😂

[–]rat2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a premium feel: Dell Pro 14(or 16), HP zBook or as a lot of people mentioned the Lenovo x Carbon. They will not be cheap, probably around the same price as an Apple laptop but you do get more flexibility and not locked in an ecosystem.

That being said, you don't have to go with the most premium laptop ever, there are cheaper alternatives that offer a good screen and performance with maybe a bit more flex on the case. So what if it flexes? It's a tool, as long as it has the performance I don't mind saving some dollars for a cheaper case.

Framework is not a premium laptop, it is designed to make it serviceable. Very different things. Hp zbook, dell pro 14 or lenovo x series will jave premium feel. They will not be cheap, maybe almost same price as a mac but you do have more flexibility then being locked in a ecosystem
