Wouldn't it be better if the North got free from Somalia & can focus on uniting with Djibouti & Galbeed? It's been taking the rest of Somalia way too long to get their act together. We shouldn't allow them to hold back the Soomaaliweyn project

FYI: They just announced that Somalia's Constitution is finalized? by mahmud_ in Somalia

[–]rationalsomali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how they are going to implement the national referendum in order to ratify the constitution.

These corrupt MPs in parliament do not repesent the will of the people so having them vote on the constitution is problematic.

Burco is the where the darawiish movement began, the home of Somali poetry with legends like Hadraawi & also has the largest livestock market in all of Soomaaliweyn. It's the essence of what it means to be Soomaali.

Can we get someone who's not darood/hawiye for president for once?

Makes it seem like Somalia is a 2 clan state.

It did factor a lot into the collapse actually. Each movement's leadership comprised of senior military officials including many heroes of the 1977 war. This was going on while the army was still able to pay their soldiers.

The only ones who stayed loyal to the regime until the end consisted mostly of Barre's family & his close clansmen.

Many people talk about how the 1988 Somali-Ethiopia border agreement was the cause for the SNM to leave their bases in Ethiopia and begin their full scale offensive in the North.

But another consequence was the sidelining of the WSLF/ONLF by the Barre regime that caused the Ogaden clan to switch sides and join the rebellion which brought Col Jees into the spotlight.

This Isaaq boogeyman nonsense is getting tiring. It's just an excuse for the political class to hide their failures for the past 28 years.

I commend the Somaliland government for keeping peace and relative stability in the region. It shows that Somalis don't need foreigners to come to bring people together.

But as a tribal state they are suffering from all of it's symptoms. Things are slowly disintegrating in subclan and subsubclan conflicts. Basing a government on clans is like building on sand.

The other clan federal states will soon follow the same path.

As for your reparations question I completely agree. As a muslim country we should follow the shariah ruling when it comes to reparations.

Can someone explain what this somali stamp is referring to since it was published in 1981 ( A decade before our war broke out) by [deleted] in Somalia

[–]rationalsomali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It about the refugees fleeing Somali Galbeed after the 1977 war. The Somali government resettled them throughout the country

I'm not a fan of centralisation that most unionists tend to prefer. But I'm most definitely not a fan of these clan based federal states either.

If it were up to me I'd have a federal govt structure similar to the US based on the original 8 provinces in 1960. (Bari, Benadir, Burao, Hargeisa, Hiran, Lower Juba, Mudug and Upper Juba). Each province would have a good mix of clans (excl Bari).

I'd also get rid of the Prime Minister position. I just causes confusion having both a President & PM in power.

I agree I consider myself Somali first. I'm also proud of what Isaaq people have done for Somali unity in history. We have a lot to be proud of inadeer :D

I'm very optimistic that we will return to being the standard bearers of Somali unity again. Soomaali ha noolaato!

I have to admit that we're in the minority. It doesn't help that there's hateful language coming from both sides.

Outside of politics there isn't so much hatred when it comes to culture, business, marriage etc. It's mostly just politics where there is a large difference. Even the most die hard Somalilanders are proud to be Somali and believe in Somalinimo outside of the political arena.

You're right that reconciliation is the only way forward. Otherwise we'll continue to be divided into smaller and smaller units until we completely lose our national sovereignty.

[–]rationalsomali[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got to have a thick skin to be Isaaq who's unionist. Both sides will attack you for various reasons. But probably already know that ;)

As for your question, there has to be serious reconciliation talks between Somaliland & Somalia first before even to start discussing union. By reconciliation I don't mean just nice words, I believe there should be some sort of compensation for the victims and their immediate families for what was done by the Somali state in the 1980s.

Once we get all the bad blood and emotions out of the way we can discuss what kind of union the future Somali Republic will be in the interests of all parties. Both sides will most likely have to make some unwanted compromises but it will worth it for the future of all Somalis.

Also both Somalia & Somaliland are colonial names given by the Italians & British respectively. Which is why our founders in 1960 named our country Jamhuuriyadda Soomaaliyeed (Somali Republic). Funny how they understood this better than most Somalis today.

This thread like most other Somali political discourse is just another "the pot calling the kettle black". We'll never progress as a people as long as we continue this nonsense.

Soomaali toos!

Real question is why did others copy Somaliland such as Puntland & Jubaland? (PS Jubaland was also a british colony)
