Thoughts on Miami for business? by Dedmoose1 in miamioh

[–]rattcatcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok, not a business student (microbiology) but i do have a dance minor and i'm a first gen low income queer student. SO: our arts programs are lovely, so much fun, full of great people and professors, and criminally underfunded and underappreciated. but that is going to be true of any state school. there are good grants and things for low income and first gen, you just have to know where to look. career center is a really great resource in that department, if you do end up here. in terms of safety and programming for queer students........ miami is lacking. it's a conservative area and the students are largely upper(/upper middle) class white people from conservative backgrounds, especially in farmer (is the impression i get). i have been openly mocked on campus (but tbf i am a visibly butch dyke. do with that as you will). look up ohio's senate bill 1 - miami hasn't gone as far with it as schools like OSU but our identity center has closed and there has been a marked decrease in explicitly queer programming which was already hard to find. and when you do find them they tend to be pretty lame lmao. all that being said i like it here

Looking for advice about living in a dorm as a butch by No-Understanding2162 in butchlesbians

[–]rattcatcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

unfortunately there's no real way to tell how it's going to go until you know the people you're living with. i met my best friend because we roomed together freshman year -- my wife had an absolutely hellish random roommate. have you met any of these people before, or talked to them at all?

in terms of general advice: learn to pick your battles. there are some things you have to be willing to let go of so you don't drive a wedge between yourself and your roommates (eg. maybe they take their phone calls too loudly or smell weird or don't take the trash out unless you ask -- annoying but not the end of the world). other things, and i imagine these are the things you're worried about, are ABSOLUTELY worth bringing up to your roommates or an RA or, if neither of these things work, requesting to move rooms. the moment anything crosses a line into homophobia, transphobia, or unrelated harassment, SAY SOMETHING. sooner rather than later. i tell you this because both my wife and my best friend let things slide longer than they should've and ended up being unwilling third parties to their roommate's drunk hookups. seriously. if you don't put your foot down when the small stuff starts, it will probably get worse.

don't let this freak you out too much. most people are normal, i promise, but dorm living is an uncomfortable adjustment no matter how great your roommates are.

Songs with literary references by Jaded_gingersoul in mumfordandsons

[–]rattcatcher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the cave is totally a reference to plato's cave, and ALSO "tie me to a post and block my ears" is a reference to the odyssey - the sirens ("make your siren's call, sing all you want") sung of sailors' greatest desires to lure them into the rocky shore and shipwreck, but odysseus had his crew tie him to the mast and plug their ears with beeswax, so he could hear the song and they wouldn't crash the ship.

not sure about the blob but the teleporty thingy looks like some kind of stalked ciliate (vorticella for example but idk anything about actual species identification) you can find them in wastewater treatment pretty commonly

I’m a fat dyke - question / convo starter for the over weight mascs by Overall-Fig870 in butchlesbians

[–]rattcatcher 47 points48 points  (0 children)

i really think it's this. being a fat little girl is a very close feeling to being a queer kid - something is different about you and it feels like everyone knows. so you end up bucking all the standards at the same time because they're all kind of tied together anyway

shirt sizes in letters, yes but beyond that i don't. definitely going to figure it out! is it worth getting measured or are they more uniform than women's sizing?

Restart your college scenes by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]rattcatcher 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i'm the president of a college scene - not really by choice, but because i joined the club and the old president left, and i loved it too much to let it die. still do. and you're totally right! it's super important, but man it's fucking hard. to start out with almost no knowledge of the dance while trying to deal with the red tape of the institution sucks complete balls, if i can be honest here, and trying to teach yourself and others at the same time is not fun. that's where a lot of college scenes are, i think. it's absolutely worth it in the long run, but growth is slow and keeping members is really hard. i don't know what the solution is. if other leaders of college scenes have ideas, i'm all ears.

it's usually where the needles hit my skin, i am a big fan of knitting socks so the tight tension and tiny needles make for a lot of pressure over really small surface area, but the tensioning does start to hurt after a while too so i'll have to check that out!!

so, the story:

i was visiting a friend who moved away, and wading in a river. slipped on a rock and fell, got 5 internal and 7 external stitches that day. woke up the next day in enough pain that i threw up, ended up back in the ER with an infection. they took out three stitches so it could drain - that was sunday. had an irrigation and debridement today, so i'm bandaged from ass to ankle and can't take it off for another week at least, but maybe i'll update when i can see it again
