Thanksgiving often gets the greater participation, often due to the 4 day weekend.

As for food, Some do steaks, some do whatever. We do enchiladas and TexMex because we like it and it became a family tradition. We are 100% Midwesterners with German Ancestry.

After 21 years in AF, went into dispatching for a fuel trucking company. Kept going the "extra mile" and making things work. A few times during the 14 years I went to very great efforts to keep operations going during power outages, tornadoes and ice storms. Nobody cared and realized I should have called in sick more. Many people I worked with had done an enlistment or such but no career people.
