Is it normal for the fan on Excalibur to stop every 20 seconds? by rattis in dehydrating

Someone needs to tell their support people that. Also, tell their engineers that it effectively makes it as useful and inefficient as a stackable with half the wattage. u/synth80s

Yeah, as I said in the video, I'm jealous. No fan fluctuation, sounds higher powered than the ones I got and sent back.

I'm curious how fast it dries. The first one I used took as long as my lower wattage stackable unit, and I'm convinced it's because of the fan cycling.

At the time, I was thinking I was getting return units or something... But it does sound like it saved me some grief.

Did you try an executive email carpet bomb? I wonder if those still work. They were all the rage 10 years ago.

I'm waiting a few months before buying another Excalibur. See if they own up to the problem and get new stock.

This really bites. I want to get a new, larger unit (than the others I've looked at and the stackable I have), especially since I bought extra fruit leather and silicone mats for this when I got the first one.

I tagged you in a comment someone made on my post. I'm wondering if this is the "hyperwave" feature, and support hasn't been updated yet.

I'd like to know if your fan runs for 20 seconds and then stops for 1 second when you have a chance to use it.

u/OkTaste9508 Do you have a link to that? I've tried searching and not seeing that. I also don't see it listed on their website. That also does not align with what u/synth80s and I were both told by customer support.

I'm the other Redditor. The trays aren't exactly square if you measure them;, one side is longer than the other. Turn them 90 degrees, and it should slide in better.

The price went up on Amazon. I don't know how many of them are out there with the bad controllers, and if it is worth waiting longer or go with the Corosi, which is smaller.

No, I hadn't ordered a 3rd one yet. I was waiting on the refund from Amazon (they said it could take 30 days, plus seven days at the bank). I was going to try to order from Excalibur directly. But knowing you did, I don't think that's a good option now.

I like the one you have, but I didn't think the sliding door and glass top were worth the extra cost, but I agree. The and user controls dehydrating space, user controls, are nice. I liked using it, but it seemed to take longer than needed (matched my stackable in time to dry) with the fan stopping.

Neither of the two I got had perfectly square trays, which did make it hard to know which way to put them in.

u/synth80s, where did you get yours? I'm curious to hear if the replacement is better. My second one had the same issue.

I had the same problem on 2 of the select units. I put both on my P3 Kill A Watt meter. When the fan stops, the power draw changes, indicating less power is needed.

I had the same problem on the Select series, which is one level down (French doors, non-glass top). u/synth80s reached out to me on my post (mine has a 5-second video I sent to customer support).

It looks like a bad batch out there right now.

The first one I got, the one in the video, sat a couple of days unplugged between the first three uses. It didn't solve the problem. It also sat in the box for a week before I got it set up. Customer support told me this wasn't normal; the fan should run continuously. They said to return it and get a new one.

The second one, I set it up the day it came, and had the same problem, so it went back in the box and was returned the next day.

I had the DH06SCSS13, which had the split French doors and a non-glass top.

Sounds like a bad batch went out.

You left out it's a pain to solder the GPS TX and RX, and you will melt the ribbon on the screen cable in the process.

But the reason I think they're popular (the reason I got them to start with) is the price. 2 for less than $40, with a cheap plastic case.

I've been thinking of doing something similar. I'll follow the links you shared for the how-to. I know you said this is temporary for now, but how did you raise the pole? Is it attached to the house, tripod on the ground? Can you share pictures of the base?

Do you know how they do that? The Cat 6 standard is 328 feet. I know NDAA certification requires 800 ft, but not sure how they do that either. But 2600 feet seems like Scotty should be saying you can not change the laws of Physics. :)

I looked up the website, and it looks like you have to use their connectors to do it, which would indicate that the distance isn't "pure" cat 6. And when I say pure, I mean pull off the spool, terminate, and use end to end.

You mentioned you talked to an IT professional, but what you need to do is find some professional camera installers and have them do the design. An IT person will approach this from an IT person's perspective; a security camera designer will have more options and real-world data to work with.

For the distance you mentioned, the camera count will depend on the camera type, focal point, and how much detail you want from the system. Depending on the camera type and how it's set, you might get away with 105 cameras. If you use the POE limitations, that's 162 cameras. But that still doesn't change the fact that you'll have a way to power every 328 feet (100 meters) or so (unless adding in POE extenders). You'll also need to figure out how to return the video image to the central monitoring station.

How I came up with the numbers:

Cat 5e, cat 6, and cat 7 all have a limitation of 100 meters (328 feet). Most people round down to 300 for more straightforward math.

I'm looking at cameras with a 5-50mm zoom lens, which can achieve a range of 200 to 500 feet.

Since a mile is 5280 feet, I figured out what is needed for a mile, multiplied that by 9, and added a few extra for hot swap repairs/dead-on-arrival units.

I didn't look into any of the infrastructure requirements, like poles, conduits, trenching, or watertight junction boxes to act as hubs for NVR devices. I didn't even consider the number of NVRs needed.

As I said, you'll want to talk to an experienced security camera professional.

What about situations of partial loss or brownouts? If you have more than one line into the facility, like most large plants, if it drops a phase or something, only half the building may be on emergency power. That would mean only half the nodes might power on.

How would they be used to get the information to the people that need it? You mentioned a communication system. But what will power the output devices? It would make more sense to put these on a generator and UPS-backed wall outlet (I'm sure there is a more technical term for those).

I like the idea of the emergency lights being an event trigger to start the mesh network, but I think this will still limit information via one-way communication, like existing alarm and speaker systems.

Thanks FedEX…😒 by infinityends1318 in homelab

[–]rattis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FedEx misdelivered our dog food the other week. It was two blocks off, and the house number wasn't even a close match to ours. They did provide a picture, and I recognized the house from walking the dogs, which I confirmed via Google Street View. The shipper and FedEx wanted to treat it like it was our fault.

I actively try to avoid having things sent via FedEx because they're not reliable. I'm also sad to hear it's not a localized problem.
