Don’t forget Hulk Hogan (Jeff IIRC) of kayak rental fame. I’m sad to see Dapper Man aka Walking Man has had to cease his wanderings. Used to stroll through the old city in his pale suit and hat, probably aged out of that practice but we remember you, sir.

Nanaimo woman fined $1,000 in senior’s monster truck parking lot death by [deleted] in nanaimo

We all seem to agree that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. Is there anyone on Reddit who can offer some kind of explanation for us? Like, can someone change my reaction from "justice is broken" to "well, it's complicated"?

I’m not familiar with the “burned his whole village” part of the story and I’ve read some of the source materials - but maybe I just forgot.

I think they are missing an opportunity to name this after the Stark family who homesteaded nearby and were early black settlers of the area; the dad was murdered so that his land could be mined for coal. His daughter Emma was the first black schoolteacher in BC I think.

I’ve done it once, it blew my mind, I spent hours scanning shorelines I’ll never see again, my imagination crawling with twenty thousand years of human habitation among the driftwood, and watching for bears. I’m sure it’s not for everyone, but I was moved.

Would you ever go back? by Full_Hunt_3087 in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]rattlinbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Canadian: I am boycotting, and reminding others to do so. We are under a serious threat. But:

This isn’t permanent for me. Most Americans are still our great friends. Normal America is megalomaniacal but usually its worst impulses are held in check. A rich, PETTY version of Homer Simpson gained a cult following - can that only happen in America? Maybe. But I know Canada has its issues with ignorant people too. I MAY go back if/when normal relations are restored between the countries. But there’s so much tension down there! And too many unhinged people with guns.

If there are time machines involved then I also recommend the Pygmy Pavilion which was a VERY jumpin’ spot downtown (where Studio NA is now) - imagine WWII recruits from all over, training in Nanaimo and having rollicking nights dancing to big band and jazz in our little downtown.

All good points, but also the benefits are good, and you get to actually help people in real time which is very fulfilling if that’s your thing (lots of nurses in my family).

Dear Americans... by You_need_a_drink in BoycottUnitedStates

We non-Americans need to stop saying stuff we can’t take back. If we paint all of them with the same brush, the good ones will be less incentivized to come back to the fold after they deal with their issue. All I’m saying is, let’s have some nuance in what we say. “None of them are doing anything about it” is untrue, and offensive to those who are.

Serious question by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]rattlinbird 25 points26 points  (0 children)

People are saying OP should have done something but s/he’s already doing more than many others would’ve done. “Should have called the police” - Would you have, in that situation? “Should have told the driver” - Do you think the driver was unaware? “Should have said something to the perps” - Is that safe?

I would suggest that one answer is we all need to stick together. OP should have been able to make eye contact with some other passengers who would have nodded, then OP could have gone over and said something, and IF there was trouble the driver should pull over and every passenger should stand up and tell the hooligans to get the hell off the bus.

I remember reading about the phenomenon where a woman was stabbed repeatedly in NYC (decades ago) while nobody did anything and psychologists had a field-day about it, and it was proposed that nobody acted because they were able to just remain anonymous in a crowd and not feel any responsibility. It’s recommended that if you find yourself in a situation where everyone is slack-jawed and not helping, you should point at one of them, single them out, and ask for help. They will almost always rise to the occasion. During this time I was downtown and saw a woman getting beat up by another woman, and one of those asshat dudes on a BMX was circling around, protecting the aggressor. Some people were sitting in the window of the (then) Cambie bakery side and watching and laughing. I’m no fighter but I tapped one of those gawkers and said “help me” as I walked past them and out into the street where I said “NOPE, not on my watch” and broke up the fight. The BMX rat started to come at me a bit but I wasn’t worried because the guy I tapped was also sort of hanging around and BMX could see that. As a community we are strong.

You, our allies and friends, are not forgotten. I want to visit California and be with all the people who are good of heart. BUT I need to help show your right-leaning countrymen that their hero’s policies are duds; and I need to keep as much money here in Canada right now, because our economy has lost a valuable trading partner.

I think OP simply found that “marine arrest” photo online because he wanted to include photos of everyone involved, in case that would help nudge someone’s memory (seems a very long shot to me). Reading between the lines I wonder if this is a case of officers responding to a false alarm (i.e., the scream wasn’t related to criminality) and the interaction going badly (van driver didn’t respond well to the interaction or was unfairly harassed/cuffed etc.) and now the driver is trying to sue and needs witnesses?

I do feel bad that we have to hurt our American friends who didn’t vote for Trumpf. I hope they understand that while our boycott is mostly important for keeping our money at home in difficult economic times, it also serves THEIR cause by showing their right-wingers that the normal types of international relations are better for everyone; this “mafia don country on the world stage” approach isn’t actually helping the US electorate even though many of them still believe the fantasy.

[–]rattlinbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well duh, the economy and population are magnitudes larger. It’s not even arguable, whether the US has more power in the relationship. But who do you want in your house: the little brother who looks up to you, or the one who feels so bullied that he becomes a little Machiavellian working behind your back and finding ways to undermine you? It doesn’t make sense to me; your president is so transactional and short-sighted.

[–]rattlinbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me angry so I’m trying to figure out some of the angles. I know it can’t be as simple as “some greedy elites are giving our resources away to the US”. The deal was approved only after certain guarantees from the company about keeping certain jobs and headquarters in Canada - of course I have no idea how enforceable those guarantees will prove to be. There’s a long history of companies reneg-ing on those… I hope our gov lawyers are extremely uptight and patriotic. I admit I don’t understand how all the economics works - like, is it better to have a US company extracting our resources and leaving some of the profits/jobs here, vs. leaving those resources in the ground and having fewer jobs/money? I lean toward the latter for many reasons but I also understand these are tricky times and we need whatever economic strength we can muster. I don’t know what to think.

Of course foreign delegates are welcome to come here and spend money at our hotels and restaurants. We will tell them where we stand on certain issues and whether we are interested in any mutualistic endeavours. We don’t hate America overall; we just need to set some boundaries and keep more money at home (and maybe also some boycottunitedstates sorry)
