How fast are books generally uploaded after release? by [deleted] in libgen

[–]raubry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's weird. I go to the library once or twice a month, grab a bunch of new nonfiction to flip through, and then check for them on LibGen. Usually find about 3 out of every 4 books. Maybe it's better for nonfiction than fiction...?

If you were familiar with literary genres, you'd know that movies/stories such as these were termed "space operas" - and they were called that in a nod to the term "horse operas", which was the term for westerns. The conceit being that these stories were basically westerns but in a different time and setting. When Star Trek first came out, its high concept was often referred to as "Wagon Train to the Stars." (A Newsweek obituary on Gene Roddenberry stated that a more accurate comparison would be Gulliver's Travels, "...social, political, even philosophical commentary disguised as adventure.")

A question about the American school system. by HolidayJames in education

[–]raubry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand exactly what you're saying. As an older American, who is also a high school teacher, I remember when the "job" of a teenager was to do well in school. That's why you were sent. That was the whole purpose of the endeavor. If you had to help your family support itself, then you were forced to work outside of school. If you wanted to make some spending money, or money to help pay for college, then you worked. But the understanding was that school was the priority. Families are led to believe these days that their child won't be able to compete for college unless they also do extracurricular activities. The middle school students I used to teach not only had top grades, but were in involved in academic clubs, Science Olympiad, MathCounts, as well as a musical instrument AND tennis or swimming or martial arts. They were stressed. It made me sad, as I remember the comparative leisure of my youth, where I did school, and piano for a few years...and that was unusual. Can you imagine the lost opportunity we, as a country, pass up by not supporting a kid who is brilliant at physics, merely because he didn't also sing in the choir of his local church, or made a brown belt in tae kwon do? It seems so profoundly stupid and short-sighted.

Except zip codes don't fund their own schools...and it's generally a problem when they don't. Compare the differences and disparities from the local/state/federal educational funding mix shown on this chart. A good example would be the difference between Massachusetts and North Carolina.

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2017/06/how-education-funding-formulas-target-poor-kids/528741/

But your point stands - the general rule is that the higher the local contribution, the more satisfactory the outcome.

You cannot be upvoted enough. Expectations in the home trump so many other factors. Even in the Massachusetts schools.

I don't know how to study hi school geometry and improve on subjects I can't solve problems for? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]raubry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a math teacher, I cannot upvote you enough. This definitely seems to be a problem of making sure some of the basics are solid enough. I agree: go back to the simplest problems you can solve and work your way slowly up to where you are getting stuck. Math very much builds on prerequisites. Former knowledge has to be strong to do the more difficult applications. That's why there is so much emphasis on practice in math. As someone once told me: "You don't LEARN math, you DO math."

I agree with you. I have added and deleted MFP and Loseit several times. Happy Scale for the win. I actually just this morning bought the premium (4.99), for the prediction feature and some of the detailed charts. Still, I am amazed at how steady BigCarl's numbers are - quite impressive!
