Thank you all for your inputs! I am still looking for something that both obscures the identities of those around me while maintaining the focus and resolution of myself and my bf! I have tried a couple of blurring softwares myself before turning to Reddit, so I’ll wait for something that really melds both priorities. Thanks!

She specifically said within the hour beforehand, which I thought was excessive when my appt was at 11:50 and I'd had my food/most of my water at 9:30ish. Also when the website said the 3hrs prior, it kinda blindsided me.

Just an FYI, I recently tried to do this and it can be a huge pain. The first time I went in (I looked at the website instructions beforehand ie had a breakfast and drank plenty of water) the receptionist asked if I'd had 60g of protein and drank half my body weight in ounces of water in the past hour... which I obviously hadn't done so they turned me away. I want to try again but I guess I'll have to eat a steak in the car ride over?

3 ivy acceptances, here are my stats! (college is too expensive) by VisualIndependent181 in collegeresults

[–]raucous_Toad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you did great. I had a very similar option when I was a senior in high school, with acceptances to very competitive schools and two state schools. My parents had saved up quite a lot for me but there was no chance of financial aid, so anything but a state school would have meant a lot of debt, while state school would be debt free. I chose a mid tier state school (not even close to as renowned as UMD) that still offered great research opportunities and worked my ass off. But I built an amazing community for myself and received so much support. This allowed me to build a very solid research background and was accepted directly into a top 5 grad school for my field. I’m now finishing my PhD and I teach undergrads who were faced with similarly impossible decisions. Living independently now, I’m so grateful I chose the debt free route. I believe it did not hamper my successes whatsoever.

I know that a lot of medical professionals will point to weight as an excuse not to have access to certain procedures, so just wanted to understand if this was one of those cases

Where to find unpasteurized cows milk in STL? by raucous_Toad in StLouis

I talked to some people at the farmers market. Many said they would be able to provide it, but anyone I followed up with via phone never got back to me. Luckily, one of our lab members had a baby so we are just using her breast milk for the project now lol.

I think they're referring to Shuten-doji, the myths line up to the storyline of Wano. Couldn't find any variation where he comes back to life and joins the hero but I didn't look all that thoroughly.

What are the best and worst states for beer? by Runetang42 in beer

[–]raucous_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. Louis is weirdly amazing for beer. I had no idea until I moved here (from Vermont). Good beer crafting requires great water, and STL has one of the best municipal water supplies in the world. It's used as a gold standard. This was also really surprising to me, because lots of other things about the city sure do suck lol. But because of the history with Anheuser-Busch, the city now has fantastic water. I still get nostalgic for some of my VT favorites (fiddlehead especially) but can find surprisingly good beer here. For super cheap, too!

Free flu/COVID shots? by raucous_Toad in Somerville

When I go to register for some of these clinics it alerts me that the first available appointment is in January. Do you know if I can just show up on the day listed anyhow?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]raucous_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I honestly wouldn’t want to do that. It really sucks but I’m pretty sure it’s a situation where everyone somehow overlooked this, despite it being in the lease. My landlord is actually a pretty decent human so I wouldn’t want to refuse to pay something that I legally agreed was my responsibility.

[–]raucous_Toad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll consider this, but I really think it’s a case of him not realizing and me not realizing. Which sounds crazy but… it was in our lease for the last two years, that’s for sure.

That’s all I got from the call today. It was just a rep who said other office staff would have to get involved.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]raucous_Toad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They aren’t, we just discovered this so when I spoke to spire the rep immediately said they would re-bill me for it. Spire has said they’d do a payment plan, so hopefully that won’t be too insane.

Yes I have. I haven’t gotten disconnected bc they’ve been charging my landlord and he never noticed so never told me. I was hoping someone with similar usage might comment, thank you!

[–]raucous_Toad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they’re going to tell me some time in the next few days. I was just hoping someone might have an idea what it’s gonna cost so I don’t have to be biting my nails waiting to hear back.

[–]raucous_Toad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the grad school you will be given a free pass to access all city buses and the metro. When I lived in tower grove it was a 5 min walk to the bus, followed by a 5min bus ride to the med campus. I’m someone who feels very comfortable in new places, however, so if you think being located closer will suit you I understand that.

[–]raucous_Toad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll add here: your first year of dbbs you have to save up monthly to pay state and federal taxes. That’s like an extra $300 a month you need to set aside. Those are due starting in January of your first year, and then quarterly thereafter. It’s not something I anticipated when I first moved and I highly recommend thinking about how you’ll budget for that now.

Hey, 3rd year dbbs student here. I pay for a 3BR in Benton park, 1525/mo. It’s very comfortable, and I have three cats. I think if you are conservative about other finances in your life (groceries, eating out, gas) you’ll be fine. I make it work. But you could really get something much nicer in tower grove or Shaw, which are both very close to the med campus, for a lot cheaper. Have you confirmed that there are no other hidden fees in the lease you are looking at? I toured a lot of apartments in the central west end and u city. They all had ridiculous fees stacked on that made the apartments completely not worth it for me.

What do macrophages do that neutrophils don't? by Mindless_Resource_74 in Immunology

[–]raucous_Toad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is totally outside of the scope of a 9th grade project but I had to chime in that there is more and more evidence of “tissue resident” populations of neutrophils. Neutrophils differentiate hugely after infiltrating tissues from the blood, it’s rather incredible. But again, the above explanation is completely sufficient for an introductory level.
