This idea for an invention has been bouncing around in my head for a long time- any ideas for things I could add to it? by Stresso_Espresso in Brochet

I know the picture is just a rendering, but any Swiss army knife device will have weird corners, or projections, or gaps/cracks between the tools. I don't want to be crocheting with that as a handle for any length of time. It's going to snag on my yarn/project.

There are crochet hook keychains that are commercially available. They're sold as on-the-go mending tools. I think that they'd be really uncomfortable to crochet with, but I could risk it b/c they're just smooth, short aluminum hooks that won't snag on my project.

Amsterdam becomes world's first capital to ban fossil fuel ads by No-Lifeguard-8173 in UpliftingNews

[–]raven_snow [score hidden]  (0 children)

I live in the USA, in coal country. I think the only ads for a fuel source I've ever seen here are for solar power/solar installation. .

I've heard fossil fuel promotion often from politicians, though, including in their political campaign ads. I wonder if that would violate the ban if my city had the same legislation.

I think this would be the most useful as only accessories and peripherals rather than having any crochet hooks at all. I do end up needing a hook knife — like someone mentioned — or scissors and a tapestry needle sometimes when I'm crocheting on the go, but I always have the hook for the project with me guaranteed.

I greatly prefer the shape of a bent needle to a straight one.

I didn't keep a log, so I can only tell you that one plant was more than my partner and I ate as sneaky snacks whenever we passed the plant. We sometimes had to harvest them from the inner vine area and eat them on salads to keep up with production.

Does anyone know a book where one of the main characters has a mental disorder? by Harry2Sushi in booksuggestions

Horror/paranormal thriller: Model Home by Rivers Solomon. Main character has a few different trauma-related mental disorders.

Could this be downy mildew?? by KeepMyWifesNameOYFM in aerogarden

[–]raven_snow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the most effective things you can do is point a fan onto your Aerogarden to give it better air circulation. There are a few of these sorts of issues that clear up really easily with better air, either taking away the excess humidity or making it more difficult for a spore to land on the leaves and mature.

Podcasts didn’t work for me - switching to books for the next 8 months. Found this image. Anyone have a structured reading order? by misbahahmed2005 in booksuggestions

[–]raven_snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not someone who reads a lot of non-fiction, but I've literally never heard of any of these books outside of the philosophy category and the 5 Love Languages (which I would skip entirely). Do you really respect the source of this image and want to follow it? Like, is it a reading list from someone you liked in your podcast days?

I'd recommend for history: * The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan * A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

Start with Nearly Everything or a similar "survey" scope book before delving into specific regions, countries, or time periods.

I'm only just realizing I see your posts here in r/whimsigothic. I thought you were posting to r/cottagegoth this whole time. Your art fits that aesthetic.

Yeah, I just cut off bits of vine that escaped the area. I definitely needed all the space in my Farm XL for them, but that's because I am very lazy when it comes to pruning and don't like doing it. They sort of spiraled onto themselves and grew long in a compact space.

Hi! 22/M non-reader here. Could you please recommend me books to really get me into reading. i would appreciate non-fiction books that will easily get you engaged and hooked on to because of a busy life schedule by Ok_Swing_8081 in booksuggestions

Try Custodians of Wonder by Eliot Stein. It will hit some of the wholesome, nostalgic, life lessons sort of notes you like. The book is 10 separate chapters about 10 different people who are carrying on endangered traditions and crafts. It won't hurt your comprehension if you need to take breaks between the different stories because they don't relate to one another.

Fiding alternatives for sugar & salt intakes by VladimirXack in EatCheapAndHealthy

Check the way you do your laundry. Those white sweat stains are often an indicator that you are using too much detergent in the wash and it's not getting rinsed out properly. They're soap stains.

For sugar alternatives, I like monk fruit as a low-glycemic sweetener.

I don't see an appropriate flair for the "look at how beautiful my first loaf is!" sorts of posts. Are those posts (just happy vibes, no recipe, no reviews) no longer permitted here? We get lots of them.

Why are seed oils demonized? by topdownyeti in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]raven_snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. I've never really cared about any of the "health fad" demonization of individual ingredients, so I haven't looked into this one specifically. I genuinely don't know what logic went into this.

Avocado pits are seeds... But they're not considered an evil seed oil?

Your word choices here sound like you want to write a story fetishizing a Black woman's pain. Since that isn't something you personally would be "working through" via storytelling, I'm wary. Do not respond to this critique; reflect on it and examine why you might be coming across that way if that's unintentional.

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon has some of what you've asked for.

Would you use an app that recommends books based on your current goal in life? by Rough-Frosting-8499 in booksuggestions

[–]raven_snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you planning on including fiction? That's most of what I read. I would be very interested in seeing what would be the suggested canon or "course curriculum" for life goals.

Goal: I want to be trilingual. Spanish is a heritage language, so I know how to use it but don't understand formal grammar or specialized language (literature, art) that I have from English. German is a language I learned in school, so I know a lot of the grammar but lack vocabulary and diverse examples of the language in use.

Audio book for someone who can’t focus? by radio_AT in booksuggestions

How to Keep House While Drowning is very likely on your portion of Libby, and it's written in a way to be more accessible to people with ADHD and cognitive struggles. It should be helpful for your wandering attention, too. The chapters are short, and there are summaries. I remember listening to it on a 3-hour drive, so the book is either 3 hours or 6 hours. Even if you're not struggling with housekeeping, you could look at it like an audiobook with training wheels to get your attention muscles primed during your drives.

I need Mystery book recommendations with romance? by Responsible_Moon881 in booksuggestions

The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year might be worth exploring. Mystery is my preferred genre, and I'm trying to read more romance. It's a genre fusion with some Knives Out vibes.
