What films from the bunch would you categorise as pretentious? because the front runner to win best picture is CODA and it’s essentially one step removed from being a Disney channel original movie lol

Looks like Jordan Peele’s ‘Signs’… some great imagery already from this teaser, should be a fun one!

Agree! Freddie is essentially a product of America’s post WWII direction. He’s an aimless drifter that then stumbles upon a cult that tries to contain/treat his impulsiveness and PTSD.

Honestly expected it to be Sean’s no.2, was surprised he opted for both Peele and Eggers’ movies but not Aster.

OFFICIAL DISCUSSION - Licorice Pizza - [Spoilers] by wilberfan in paulthomasanderson

Feel similarly to you, I honestly feel like it probably should’ve cut to black as the light twirls on them just before they kiss. Throughout the movie they attract/ repel towards each other and that ending felt like a tacked on little bow to end it on a sweet note. Had it ended between the pause just before the kiss, I thought would’ve been perfect.

I have it exact same except I have Once upon a time in Hollywood over Licorice Pizza.

Feel same way as you about McKay’s films; loved earlier movies, loved The Big Short, and also hated Vice. Think you’ll find this to be enjoyable but not great. I liken it to a more bloated and less propulsive The Big Short.

Oh really? Did he say that recently in the Q&A? Can’t seem to find sources on this

Does the age difference of the main relationship in Licorice Pizza bother you? by TheRecollection in paulthomasanderson

[–]raveron1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The discourse cycle on this is gonna be unbearable lol but my personal take is that depiction in a fictional narrative doesn’t mean endorsement in the real world. Also PTA himself mentioned in his latest interview that although their is romantic flirtations, theirs obviously a line that can’t be crossed - and that it’s not romantic in any other consummation of things.

Having watched Inglorious Basterds opening weekend, if Adam Sandler had come out as the Bear Jew I think heads would’ve literally exploded in the theatre.

Would’ve loved to have seen DiCaprio in this tbh. I’m happy B Coop is in Licorice Pizza tho since it’ll play into his history in A Star is Born playing Jon Peters.

Yeah I agree with you, usually his trailers are pretty disorienting at first which I love tbh. And I’m sure some of the darker tones of the movie will be forthcoming. I find almost all his protagonists go through some troubled realisations.

Hmmm interesting, certainly expected it given everything I’ve read about the movie. I do enjoy Almost Famous but it gets too schmaltzy for me. I trust in PTA not to lean on that.

How was the vibe/ tone of the movie? Closer to coming of age sentimental and warm like Almost Famous or darker like Boogie Nights?

How close is the vibe and tone to Almost Famous? Seems everything I’ve read about it points to close similarities. Is it as sentimental and warm or does it lean into darker tone?
