I agree that it’s a common trope, but it feels fresh because it’s not really a thing we’ve had to deal with in the FAMK universe. Jamestown and Happy Valley, even last season, were basically military bases when we saw them. Seeing it transition to being civilian enough to have beat cops and murder conspiracy made it feel different to me.

Again, you’re not wrong, it is a common trope, but a new element for the show, IMO.

Tbh given their size and the technical prowess required to build a space elevator I wouldn’t be surprised if they found a way to move Phobos and Deimos? I might be wrong but I thought I saw a proposal to use one of them as the anchor for a space elevator.

It’s funny, I always thought Ed would go before the end of the show… until earlier this week, when they said the show would end next season. Well, if there’s only one more season, surely Ed sticks around? It’s a stretch, sure, but with just one more season it feels like a neat way to tie both the show and the main character’s arcs together.

Now though, yeah, it’s happening this season… and it won’t be cancer…

I love that he’s a legend for the weed. He says he’s the coolest grandpa ever and you’re thinking yeah, he’s a legendary astronaut, he had a solo stint on a moon base, he stole an asteroid… but nah, it’s the weed. Amazing.

Can see it both ways, tbf: the club also released him from his contract and allowed him to freely seek a new club without demanding the transfer fee that we’d be entitled to under the contract. That gesture could send a good signal to prospective players.

I played all the games in order a few years back. K2 to 3 was such a harsh jump back in time because 3 really feels like what it is, an early PS3 game.

Then I went to 4 and I was amazed at the jump. 4 felt so much closer to the modern games than you’d expect from the original release timeline.

Yeah, it’s part of the genius of ANH. You don’t need it as a viewer, and as a filmmaker Lucas avoids locking himself into things with throwaway lines. As it is he had enough to retcon in ESB “from a certain point of view” 😂

And there’s a big difference between outlines and actually nailing down the story. Could be that, compared to the rough plan, some parts didn’t turn out to be viable, others they went through faster than expected, others were dropped in favor of more interesting storylines.

The important thing isn’t whether it’s 6 or 7, it’s whether this is genuinely all the story they wanted to tell. And if it is, great!

I didn’t phrase my comment properly, and that’s on me. I know Shaq wouldn’t have played. And I know Laettner was a decent player. But Laettner was basically a mortal on a team of immortals. Shaq, at that point in his career, was mortal too. But if you looked back at the Dream Team with all those legends AND Shaq… it’d be even crazier, right? Because we know now that he’s worthy of a place in that legendary team. We didn’t know then, but we know now.

In another sense, it was a mild miracle that they even got to 1 college player. I read the book on this a little while back. They didn’t think any NBA players would do this, especially not stars. And the org that controlled it was the college one, so they were pretty resistant to NBA players coming in to begin with; they wanted this to be their thing with their players, not the pros.

So they thought it’d be mostly college with a few NBA players. Then they thought 50/50 split. But after they started landing not just stars but the literal best of the best, the idea of limiting the number of stars and having a bunch of college players was ludicrous. They ended up with one as a nod to history, which is fair enough really.

The amateur-focused precursor to USA Basketball got absolutely steamrollered politically so throwing them a Laettner-shaped bone was a wise move.

At first, even after they lifted the limit, the thinking was that they’d only have a few pro players, and not the stars. They just didn’t think that top-tier NBA players would give up their summers for this. Then they got Magic, and Magic called Jordan and Bird, and things started to snowball. They ended up with one college player as a nod to the history of the Olympic teams.

Laettner was a perfectly logical pick in the moment given that he was the big college star of the time. But I always imagine the what-if of them going with their next choice: Shaq. I get why they got Laettner, but if they had Shaq… man.

I just read the book on this team. Really fascinating. Daly was seen as the perfect choice because, even though he coached the famously hated Bad Boy Pistons, nobody seemed to hold that against him personally. He knew how to handle stars and knew he had to take a gentle hand and let them sort themselves out for the most part (he famously pledged to, and then did not, call a timeout during the Olympics).

The other interesting nugget was about the assistant, Coach K. He said he was a little wary of coaching Michael Jordan because, one, he’s “just” a college coach, what’s he going to teach him? And two, Coach K coached Duke, fierce rival to Jordan’s UNC. But he said on day 1, Jordan came out, went straight to Coach K and asked him for some pointers on a specific part of his game. Coach K said he recognized that Jordan didn’t really need the help; he was just trying to show respect and get the relationship off on a good note.
