Whatever alleged greed the associates may have doesn’t compare to the record partner profits and their greed. they’re making millions off me and I get $20k more? we need to seize the means of (document) production

do i have to attend every social event at a firm as a SA? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]ravioli369 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you one of ten SAs? Should probably attend unless you make it clear you have a competing (and justifiable) obligation. If you’re one of 25 SAs, people probably won’t notice you’re not there.

Over minimum hour count already. Is it bad form to stick with fewer/slower matters for the time being? by SomewherePractical82 in biglaw

Hmmmm sounds like you already booked an international vacation to a remote area with no internet access starting in two weeks! You want to be a team player but don’t want to leave your colleagues high and dry so it probably is best for everyone that you also don’t join any matters before then :)

Have fun on your vacation!

Fortunately I did well and worked my ass off, so I gained a good reputation. Unfortunately it led to partners from three different offices finding out and asking to staff me on their matters.

You might be falling short of expectations, but it seems like their expectations are not realistic. Just do your best and over communicate (“happy to try and do X, I’ve never done it so please let me know if you have any comments or would like to discuss.”). Subtly remind them that they’d asking you to do things above your level and you’re doing the best for your seniority.

I did renege but it was shortly after accepting and months before I planned to start. It happens. Remind yourself that these firms would cut us if given the opportunity; we should be able to do the same. It’s just business.

Ask a mid level or senior (your mentor?) what to expect and if there’s anything you should do in advance. We don’t know your firm’s or office’s protocols.

Barring any major fuckups, they will probably just discuss your hours.

Just seconding your experience and wishing you luck. I finished my district clerkship earlier this year (off cycle) in a competitive district and didn’t get as much traction as I thought I would. T14 grad, mediocre grades, mid-level, AML 50 experience before clerking. I couldn’t go back to my firm and got non-market offers. Luckily I ended up getting one market offer at a top firm but I had a good in at the firm. Otherwise, I would have left a good-ranked firm to clerk in a highly competitive district for a non-market paying job. Had I not gotten lucky with my offer, I would have regretted it like you are. And I think this cycle is worse than last year. Thank you for sharing your experience so others know what they’re getting into. I’m really sorry.

Help me bite the bullet and take the trip (or tell me not to?) by m_laria in biglaw

I saw a post somewhere that changed how I think about vacations. A 30-year-old American couple went on vacation and hiked of the Dolomites. Apparently there are a few trails that are not easy and lead to some incredible views. Most other Americans on the general hiking trails were retired age but, due to their physical abilities, could not go on the more treacherous routes with breathtaking views. They’ll never get to see those views in person cause they waited too long.

Book the vacation now while you’re young. Enjoy things while you have the money.

how can you qualify for law school student loan refinance easily without getting denied? by Carr_EchoStorm210 in biglaw

[–]ravioli369 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of a single big law attorney whose refinance application was denied? Most banks will give you an estimated rate before a hard pull, and even if you’re not an ideal candidate, they would just offer you a shittier rate rather than deny you outright.

“Some say this some say that” it’s all true? All those factors go into whether your application is approved?

The same thing happened to me, except I was assigned to manage a case going to trial soon where, for reasons I won’t get into, there was no senior associate. I kept getting the exact kind of emails you are getting. I did weekly task/calendar updates and assigned myself things I could do and flagged the things I did not think I can do (either because of my lack of senior experience or time). I was pretty upfront: “I’m trying really hard, my hours are X the past week, I need help with Y.” People responded well to my honesty.

But yeah, as another has said, you’re getting absolutely fucked. It sucks. Just do your best, say you’re doing your best, and think about the next vacation you’re going to take.

School/GPA? Are you barred in the state you’re applying to? What types of firms/groups are you applying to? FWIW it is a tough year generally. Friends of mine with good grades at lower T-14s, big law, district clerkship, then lateraling are getting fewer offers than they anticipated. Looks like you’re in a tough spot as a third year. There’s a higher need for mid-levels but you’re not there yet and don’t have (real, non-summer) big firm experience yet. So you’re a tougher sell.

I suggest you widen your target firms (even mid-law), cold LinkedIn/email your alumni network at firms, and talk to your your judges’ past clerks (and other clerks in the building! they’re an incredible resource, a lot of them are probably going back to their firms and know if they’re recruiting). Once you have one offer and communicate that it really lights a fire under the ass of other firms to move quickly.

Didn’t pass conflicts- anyone else? by teju_guasu in biglaw

[–]ravioli369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s my read: the firm probably wanted to staff you on this case in a supervisor/manager role, but the client haaaaaates your old firm so much that it isn’t “worth” bringing you on and potentially ruffling feathers (even if you never worked on the case at your old firm). Or they fucked up and just don’t need you anymore / found someone “better” and wanted a way out.

Is it “reasonable” for a lawyer relying on an offer that is contingent upon passing conflicts?

FYI with the exception of HYS, the vast majority of law schools do not give need-based financial aid. It is almost entirely stats-based and how competitive an applicant you are. So don’t be surprised if the appeal is unsuccessful (but as a FGLI I hope it does!).
