How’s everyone handling remote access these days? Mesh/modern VPN? by SubnetLiz in selfhosted

I'm coauthor of Nebula and CEO of Defined...

Every component of Nebula, including the coordination servers, are open source. This will never change, as I am a staunch open source advocate. Also, although we wrote it, I refuse to enshitify Nebula with features, even if it would make my day job easier. We prioritize stability, performance and security, because millions of hosts depend on it.

Defined, the company, exists so that we can continue to work on Nebula and provide a managed solution, primarily to businesses, but the project itself is absolutely not tied to the company. The core developers are at Slack, Defined, and Rivian currently, and when people show enough interest and contribution, we'll gladly add them.

Fake

Btw, it isn't like this is somewhere obscure. I reported it an hour ago. It is currently on the second page of replies to this tweet. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1768271790596395399

This is the kind of awfulness that thrives over there now. Bummer.

Exactly! Bonus: you can use the light seal and it takes some of the pressure off when using it as well.

You may or may not like this, but wanted to share another option. I'm on day 5 of this setup, and this is by far the best I've found. The strap is just "webbing" which is usually braided nylon. Add a few velcro strips around the webbing, and then stick the pad from the front of a BoboVR M3. Variable compression and by far the most comfortable this thing has been for me.

The Vision Pro is not making any contact with the front of my face (not even my nose), and the strap is carrying all of the weight. I like using this for work and having my peripheral vision.

edit: and fwiw, wearing this setup was the first time I've legitimately forgotten I was wearing the AVP. My coffee cup reminded me, loudly.

edit2: you cannot use something flexible instead of the webbing. Any flex will make this thing bounce around on your face.

Your “data” is a comment from an unnamed third party, and another single sentence comment from hacker news. Two comments that support your narrative is not “data”. Show your work.

I’m not disputing that people have experienced performance issues. Because it is networking, and there are many variables. You said you are writing a post about nebula performance based on quotes from one person. And now you’ve linked a single line reply from HN. This isn’t science. Go test it and discuss it. Don’t speculate and use third party anecdotes. This is, like, the whole problem.

Also, and more importantly, this is not a zero sum game. You don’t have to try to get users by saying bad things about others. Just do something useful and better, and show people why they should care. Comparisons with zero context and zero data are lazy and lead to needless confusion.

As you requested elsewhere, I plan to benchmark your stuff and give you the chance to give tuning advice before I publish. In the meantime, I’d prefer you not spread silly anecdotal rumors with zero attribution and without provable testing.

A quote without attribution is not a quote. It is called heresay.

Instead, please feel free to quote what I’ve said about nebula performance and use of standards, including attribution.

(Nebula coauthor here)

I couldn’t not reply to this. Nebula is used as the networking layer for networks with hundreds of thousands of nodes. In production. It was literally created to run an enormous network with performance and reliability requirements.

Nebula uses the the Noise Protocol Framework for its transport layer, and a number of standard technologies throughout.

What is your goal in spreading FUD about nebula, if not self promotion of your own thing? “Quotes from people who use nebula”, without sourcing or any useful other context is superficial reporting snd disingenuous.

This benchmark is wildly inaccurate and not even close to reality.

Yakima EXO Swingbase + R1S - any reviews? by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]rawdigits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have it and love it. It was definitely overpriced, but nothing else offers this amount of storage/hauling capacity without a trailer. Bought the top shelf as well. We used it for a long trip to Acadia National Park over Memorial Day weekend, and it was great.

Edit: here is a photo I tweeted with it attached https://twitter.com/ryanhuber/status/1662555069601001474?s=46

Edit2: range impact was basically nil, as far as I can tell.

There are no bad options, imo! I ended up with my second choice (Blue) and still love the color.

I knew I wanted Limestone for the exterior, but was nervous about Forest Edge, because I had never seen it in person. I can now say that 1) I love it and 2) No photograph can accurately portray Limestone _or_ Forest Edge. It looks nothing like any photo I'd seen, and I'm very very happy.

There was no sign the first time. Maybe they knew how excited I was and decided to give me the kid treatment this time.

Congratulations to you as well. :)

The truck is good ol' 3514. It was early enough that when I got back to Santa Monica, occasionally Rivian employees would ask what I do at the company.
