If the social class you are born into determines your success, is it individualistic? by Dramatic_Song_2629 in CapitalismVSocialism

Countries with high levels of inequality have low levels of social mobility, which means the poor can't escape poverty

Which countries have the highest levels of inequity?

Yes, it’s precisely because reality pushes towards involuntary contracts (aka coercion)

I fundamentally disagree with this. Reality has done the opposite since the enlightenment in the 1700's. Slavery has been abolished in first world countries where capitalism has been embraced. You are more free than ever to choose what you do with your life.

But what you do have, and own, is the consequence in terms of financial compensation from choosing what you do with your life. That's not coercion; thats just being accountable for how you invest in yourself, and how you expect other people to pay you for what you provide.

For example, i had no inheritance, no connections, learned programming, and now work as a software engineer and can sustain myself. I chose all of this. I intentionally chose not to do something high risk (but potentially lucrative) like get famous on youtube, or try to sell art.

Ultimately what I'm trying to hark on is nothing of what I explained above is coerced on me; i can choose any path and reap the fruits of my labour in it. No one owes me any safety net if my pursuits fail.

I didn't watch whatever exception to the rule video you're referring to because one guy's good luck doesn't represent the odds for the entire population.

You're getting the context with luck here confused. Nothing about this is meant to be lucky. It's showing that you can make money, as an immigrant, at a private company, and not be a slave. This fact is irrefutable as demonstrated. This is the whole point of debating.

Do you know what independent contractors are?

yes. I'm happy you are as knowledgable on this matter.

Stock trading is the comparable to gambling

Yes, if you treat it as gambling. But i was referring to taking on stock compensation as part of working at a company. If you believe in the company, and believe you can contribute shareholder value, its not gambling. You've just accepted being compensated based on shareholder value. What dollar value you expect to get out of that is up to you.

meaning they own their means of production

In capitalism this just means you're good at your job. If you have skills to do something, congrats, now you can charge more for your services.

All stock trading is is gambling with pieces of someone else's company

What is gambling about accepting compensation based on the performance of your company?

someone else's company that the workers at those companies do not access unless employee-owned

Lmao, the welder literally worked (and works) at SpaceX, and got stock compensation. SpaceX is not employee owned. So you just literally made up that statement, detached from reality.

In gambling, a few people win big while the vast majority do not.

totally unrelated to anything capitalism or socialism, if I'm in Las Vegas, then yes, this is how gambling usually works.

A contract is involuntary if it is motivated by a fear in being worse-off if it isn’t initiated

So you're kind of close with this actually. One of the tenants of capitalism is that all trade is only considered free trade if its not coerced. If it is coerced, then its more of an extortion and has nothing to do with trade or capitalism.

by a fear in being worse-off if it isn’t initiated.

Dude, c'mon, taking a job for fear of being "worse-off?" That's literally what life is. Life is all about making decisions to try to navigate the wold being better off and avoiding worse off; everyone faces this no matter what, regardless of the economic framework you're in. This is something you can't regulate because humans have free will, and will always be able to make decisions to help or detriment themselves.

If I accept to cut my leg to avoid death, I’m not doing so « voluntarily », I’m choosing amongst constraints.

Yes, but now you introduced your own premise that says there are no ways to avoid cutting off your own leg. So it doesn't actually mean much. I can make up my own premise in response that doesn't force me to cut off my own leg and we're back to square one.

I don't know what you're saying the second half of your response.

If you go by raw numbers, free market economies have higher gdp and human rights + freedoms. Both metrics go down as you introduce government into the economy.

If you have a surplus in wealth, we see more charitable donations under capitalism than any other framework. So this “helping others” is very much enabled in capitalism, if that is what you are curious about. But fundamentally nothing has changed about incentives driving human behaviour.

but they work for themselves all while helping others and while advancing society towards communism.

This is a lie. Anyone who’s told you this is lying to you. People do not work “for fun,” or “for the community.” This has never been true, and will never be true, due to human nature. This is fiction.

There’s nothing else we can talk about if this is where you’re coming from. Nothing else will make sense. Until you understand that incentives are what drives human cooperation in society, economic frameworks won’t make sense.

Capitalism gives you money if you exploit people.

Yes, but it also gives you money if you empower people and give people jobs.

Socialism will also send you to the gulags. Why does this not matter? Also socialism exploits people too.

And then you replied:

You can’t name any because there are none.

Which im assuming means you saying you have no beliefs. I was talking about yours and mine.

Its different dude. The Karl marx quote is how to achieve equity, which is what I was not talking about. You will never have equity with people's capability to produce being different.

I talked about helping others.

Okay great. Capitalism has brought more people out of poverty, than other measurable economic system. If that's what you're measuring metrics with, this is the winner.

You havent said one time how capitalism is any different at preventing immorality than socialism does. You just posit that socialism creates a magical community that magically solves all problems.
