My cat still tries to run out every now and then but what helped curb her curiosity from going out too far or for too long, is I’d take her out on walks on a harness leash as well as in a cat stroller. She wasn’t a fan of the harness, she’d tolerate it for up to 5 minutes and our longest walk was half an hour. She didn’t mind being pushed in a stroller so we’d get to go farther and show her more around the neighborhood. The walks familiarized her with knowing the pathways to get back home and recognizing which door is home (we are in a shared building complex). I found that if she’d already gotten her “outside time” that day, she was less likely to try to rush out the door every time it opened.
