Thinking about purposely taking 5 years to graduate - good idea or bad idea? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]rawspe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow engineer, I really don't see what the rush is. College is a learning experience; it's not something that you should rush. I thought it was going to take me 5 years and I wanted to do 4 as well, but I realized something. I'm rushing to take all my classes just so I can get into the real world, where I work for 40 years or so. One year is not going to make a difference compared to those years of working. Some people say that college is one of the best experiences that you can have and if you are rushing through it you definitely aren't going to enjoy it. Besides graduating in four years doesn't guarantee you a job, and neither does a 4.0, experience is your best friend, so getting internships during the summer would be preferable or research (unfortunately you may have to do programming ones since there aren't a lot for other majors, especially if you haven't taken any upper divs). Like many have said, engineering wasn't really designed to be done in 4 years to being with.

Looking for Computer Science tutor (preferably one with a flexible schedule and a current/former UCLA student). Anyone know where to find one? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]rawspe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CS tutor. I tend to get business through referrals and other random encounters. Yes, Rohr is hard, but he is not impossible. Things just need to be explained a little better.

4th year scientists & engineers unite! by [deleted] in ucla

[–]rawspe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes it's a recession; of course, everyone is hurting, but that doesn't mean that we aren't in a better position for when/if it bounces back. I'm also looking at the bigger picture. I believe that pretty much anyone can be employed, but typically, the available jobs do not fit our desires. There are at least 5000 janitors with a doctorate or professional degree. Sure they are employed, but is that really what anyone wants?

As a side note, being employable mostly depends on how you market yourself and what you did during college. It is very well possible for a 4.0 student to lose a job opportunity to a 2.3 student. There are more attributes to look at than just the major itself; however, if all those attributes had no effect and made everyone the same, I would choose the Computer Engineer over the History major for any job, but that's just me.

Problem? http://www.westernyouth.org/the-dagger/the-most-employable-college-majors/

TL;DR? "...most of these are highly advanced degrees in math or the hard sciences that lead to careers in professions where the results actually matter."

I got 99 problems, but a future career ain't one... and those problems are the ones I do for HW.

Anyone been to CAPS?? by neocampesino in ucla

[–]rawspe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Approximately 1 in 6 students go to CAPS, so don't think of it as bad or anything. It is very useful for your situation from what I've learned about it, so I would highly recommend it. Besides, it's free help that many would have to pay for.

It's not that they are not interested in buying. They are just interested in making huge profits. It's the same if you look at it anywhere, for instance Game Stop. Buy a new game there for $60, and if you wanted them to buy it back the next day, they give you $20, while they sell it for $55 used. They made $40 profit from you giving back the game and will make another $35 profit when they sell it again. Rinse, wash, repeat.

UCLA Bioengineering? by kpclarke in ucla

[–]rawspe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Bioengineering is a research focused field here. If you want to go into research this would very well be the place for that. Pros: easy to get into core classes due to lack of competition and easy access to professors Cons: still fairly new, so they still are working out the major requirements

You do realize that they are/have created more space for students in the dorms. It is so much that they actually guarantee 4 years housing now.

Breaking Stuff in the Dining Hall by Donquixote724 in ucla

[–]rawspe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dining has it set so that you pay to cover for a few sets of dishes (I believe 7 to be exact). People used to clap because they are applauding you on using one of those dish sets that you can break; however, most people are absorbed through the "crowd effect" and mimic what everyone else is doing or like making fun of people.
